Sorry for the delay folks but we're finally back to wrap up *checks notes* Captain Marvel Part 3? Or is this Shazam? Yeah we waste no time in this episode addressing the elephant in the room: What the heck do we call this character? Kriss & Dpalm have varying opinions but one thing that is agreed upon is that this is all DC's fault. They destroyed Fawcett because the "Superman Clone" was more popular than Superman, then tried to resurrect the character 20 years later after the name had already been registered by Marvel. So we're covering the ups and downs of the "Original Captain Marvel". We cover the Whiz Comics years, the DC relaunch, Roy Thomas' interesting yet unfinished attempt at the character, Jerry Ordway's Power of Shazam and the struggle of DC trying to figure out what to do with the character that once outsold Superman

Also...one of you asked for this so Dpalm also does a quick explanation of Marvelman. Just know it involves Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison. Buckle in folks. You're in for a ride.

Issues:

Early Fawcett Years:

  • Whiz Comics #2 - First appearance of Billy Batson/Captain Marvel, Shazam (the Wizard) and Dr. Sivana
  • Captain Marvel Adventures #18 - First Appearance of Mary Bromfield/Batson
  • Whiz Comics #25 - First Appearance of Freddy Freeman
  • Master Comics #21 - First Appearance of Captain Nazi
  • Captain Marvel Adventures #26 - First Appearance of Mister Mind
  • The Marvel Family #1 - First Appearance of Black Adam
  • Shazam! A Celebration of 75 Years - Contains more than the Fawcett comics but is a good catch-all
  • The Shazam!  Archives
  • The Shazam! Family Archives

The DC Relaunch

Kriss, Ro and Brandon review Jordan Peele's latest film, Us. This is a film that's difficult to process after just one viewing. Peele plays with the horror genre that feels both as a homage and something completely new. It's a contradiction of a mainstream yet niche film. The weird and confusing parts don't distract from the entertainment value and great performances. Lupita Nyong'o puts in one hell of a performance and she's not alone.

We dive into what we enjoyed about the film, what gave us pause (not necessarily in a bad way) and why it's needs to be seen multiple times to really grasp what the film is trying to show us.

The Flash has done a great job this season fixing a lot of the issues we've had with previous seasons. Even down to timing episodes right so they fit with breaks. Nora having to reveal that....scratch that...Sherlocke revealing that Nora has been working with Thawne and Barry putting her in the Pipeline is the perfect way to go into a break. Add in the way they keep evolving the threat of Cicada and they're hitting on all cylinders. Grace Cicada is frighteningly powerful and seemingly doesn't have the weaknesses of her uncle.

We had to double up on Arrow episodes this week. First in Training Day, the SCPD (out of all the incompetent fictional police departments) has the audacity to try to get Oliver and the team to follow their procedures. It goes about as well as you'd expect. Then in Star City 2040, Mia Smoak wants all the smoke. Plus, Rene of the future snitches at least 2 times this episode. It's in his DNA.

Also, we're quickly approaching the end of the season and this can't end well. Something terrible has to happen for everyone to split so drastically.

Listen to me now, believe me later!  WHAT DID I TELL YOU?!?  I TOLD Y'ALL IT WAS EVE!

And now we know it was under the direction of Lex, who has now pulled together his iconic Tessmacher/Otis sidekick lineup.  My ship has sailed with a long awaited kiss between Nia and Brainy (She don't have to know Brainy, lean into it!), and J'onn finally goes off the deep end as Manchester wanted, causing him to fall deeper into a conflict of crisis.  Lena perfects the Haranel (forgive my spelling) only to be double crossed by her brother (girl DUH!), and Lex finally meets Supergirl face to face.  The show slowed down for more character development and introduction, and seems to have perfected the ability to do so without feeling like it has slowed down.

It's finally here. Our discussion for the final three episodes of The Gifted season 2. We talk about how the season wrapped up, how the uncertainty of a season 3 might have changed some of the final story points and why we hope there is a season 3. While Reeva didn't get the full development we want, it feels as if the rest of the main cast did. Reed and his sacrifice really worked for us as a complete arc. Also...when you're the only member of your family without super powers, packing heat is a necessity as Caitlin proves.

Kriss, Ro & Brandon review the weird but entertaining and engaging film from Milorad Krstic,  Ruben Brandt, Collector. This is Krstic's first feature film and it's pretty damn good. It's also weird. Very very weird. The use of famous artwork and the animation style to tell a heist story is innovative. The film is like an animated version of Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol. Yeah...it's that crazy. It's definitely not for everyone but if you're up to the challenge, it's definitely worth checking out (but you cannot do anything else while you watch or it will be even more confusing).

Four expert thieves attempt to steal every famous artwork that is haunting their mutual psychotherapist. A detective attempts to find out who the "Collector" is.

Kriss and Dpalm are back to review the latest episode of The Flash (sorry for the delay in getting it out). We really are loving this season and how everything is coming together. This season has been doing a great job of keeping Cicada an interesting and challenging villain while also having the Thawne threat around the corner. And the twist with the second Cicada now has us asking all kinds of questions (Time travel? Another Earth?). Also add into all that the fact that Barry has really become the motivational hero we know him to be (even giving Joe West Black Fatherhood Moment talks back to Joe himself), this has all just been a fun show to watch this season

Oh and we do a quick and short talk of the Endgame trailer because...we have to. Speaking of Endgame, if you want to watch Endgame with the MTR Network crew in LA or in DC, tickets for our private viewings go on sale Monday, March 18th at Noon est. Check Endgame.MTRNetwork.Net for more details.

Barry channels that great Flash motivation to convince Cicada to take the meta human cure. Orlin agrees, Cicada is defeated and everyone lives happily ever after…sike just kidding. Of course it didn’t’ work and now everyone is fucking screwed

First things first. Kriss will probably be kicked off this podcast and removed from having editorial control over the title of episodes as well as episode art. Anyway, Star Trek Discovery Season 2 continues to be amazing and continues to surprise us. We're starting to get episodes that connect to the Short Treks from before the season as well as connecting all the previous episodes to the search for Spock & the mystery of the Red Angel. Is the Red Angel changing the past to save the future or are they CORRECTING the past to save the future? Also, episode 8 opens with a recap with the actual footage of the pilot from the Star Trek pilot? This show is really doing something special.

Articles we also discuss on this review:

Another great episode but can anyone explain why Kara left the Fortress hide a key under a snow rock exposed next to the keyhole?  Clark needs to come back and repossess his property!

This week we get another exciting episode as Manchester Black continues to ramp up the mayhem with his Elite, Lena digs deeper into her project, under some deadline that is driving her to isolate and singularly focus, Dreamer stays ramped up on 10, and J'onn struggles with going HAM vs keeping his promise to remain peaceful.  Brainy rallies the alien troops for a peaceful protest against Ben Lockwood's MAGA rally, and a shocking ending leaves The Doctor dropping a theory on Shanna that leaves her a little speechless.

Arrow is back and we're having any more questions about what goes horribly wrong to give us the future we see in the flash forwards. William says he never knew about Mia because Oliver and Felicity stopped contacting him when he moved in with his grandparents but we see that Oliver tried to contact William (a lot) but never got a call back. And why is Connor saying he's Diggle's adopted son and not his biological son? And why is Diggle the only one that knew that Felicity had a daughter? Throw in the fact that in the present time we find out that Dante is played by Adrian Paul aka Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod and well...the rest of Arrow's run is shaping up to be very very interesting.

Team Arrow is all bout family which is why all their families are fucked up. Meanwhile, Oliver & Argus find out Dante is Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod so they’re completely fucked

Kriss, Ro, Brandon and Ashley review the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain Marvel. This is Marvel's first solo film for a female character and they do a pretty good job. Brie Larson does a great job (despite all the white fanboy hate prior to the film) and really owns the role of Carol. We also talk about how Lashana Lynch and Akira Akbar should be getting more praise for their roles in this film and how their characters help this movie avoid some tropes that happen with female characters. This film also serves as a semi-origin story for Nick Fury and fits well into filling in th history of the MCU and how we got to the point of bringing the Avengers together.

Stay for the two after credit scenes (the first being the one to get you hype for End Game) and the Stan Lee Tribute and cameo will make you cry.

The Flash is finally back from a small break and Dpalm & Kriss are here to pick right back up with the review. This was a fun episode. Clearly the show has been working on it's CG cause an episode had both King Shark and Gorilla Grodd looking pretty good. Also, as a bit of a tangent, the epic meeting between these two gets Kriss & Dpalm to talk about their VERY RATIONAL fear of bears...aka land sharks. Other things we liked in this episode:

  • Welcome back Jesse L Martin
  • Of course the "Meta-Cure" was used against someone's will. We're X-Men fans. We know how this turns out
  • What's up with Sherloque acting weird when the team mentions Harry from Earth-2?

Also we talk about the news of Arrow coming to an end next season with a 10 episode run and how much they've earned a proper send off.

In the second episode of I Talk Shit & Read, I spent some time with  L.L. McKinney (aka Elle) about her debut novel A Blade So Black.

Guest: L. L. McKinney

Because the Twitterverse has no chill, we started off discussing an online controversy surrounding a YA novel, Blood Heir, the author eventually decided to pull in order to address racially problematic elements in the writing. (I wanted to hyperlink to an article about the issue but damned if I'll promote clicks to skewed hot-takes that just want to bash anyone who vocally took issue with the novel or the marketing direction. I asked about Elle focused on pointing to the initial marketing "blurb" labeling the story "color-blind" and how that in-and-of-itself is problematic, in publishing and in life.  Our conversation took off from there.

Elle went on to share how exploring fear, its physical effects, and a concept of accountability influenced the creation of "Wonderland." How race is processed by readers (and writers) and how it matters beyond being a buzz word even in fantasy.  Our discussion touched on other real-life elements that impact her writing and how that helped this world evolve. We talked about what she hopes to see in the coming television adaptation from Lionsgate.

And because I have no sense, the conversation went left on more than one occasion. Thankfully, Elle was happily on board; probably because she knows she's gonna kill a character I like somewhere along the way...

A Blade So Black:

After barely escaping an attack with her life, Alice agrees to be trained to fight Nightmares invading her world. But to do so, she'll have to juggle a protective mother, school, friends, and her secret job as a slayer.  Set in an alternate Atalanta and a Wonderland reimagined, A Blade So Black is the tale of a young girl coming of age carrying a burden she'd like nothing better than to put down driven to sacrifice in order to save the world knowing she'll have to live with the consequences.

If you like your friends snarky and jokes relatable and your heroes to carry swords, A Blade So Black may be the trip down the rabbit hole for you. This is not your typical fairy tale but it looks to have the makings of one helluva adventure.

Plus, the second installment, A Dream So Dark hit shelves on September 24, 2019.

We got all the faves back this week!  Ben Lockwood reminds folks that even though he's a professor what you will NOT do is think you can come for his throne.  Ben basically told the wannabe usurpers to put some respect on his name.  It's interesting watching Ben navigating what conferred legitimacy means to a grassroots movement, even if it is steeped in bigotry and exclusiveness.  Kara and the Superfriends (Brainy, Nia as Dreamer, and J'onn) take on Manchester and the Elite (Menagerie, Hat, and a Morae) in a battle that causes Kara to question her alliances, her allegiances, and her approach to crime fighting.  The best thing about Manchester is that even if you disagree with his methods, you have to admit underneath all of that his cause is one of righteousness-he's trying to protect those who are being victimized.  Clearly, Kara had to make a tough choice in this episode, but it also caused her to get Alex on board by appealing to her true nature.  We also discuss whether or not Haley can be redeemed after the terrible start the show gave her, and James vs. Lena in the ethics of granting powers to humans under a government contract.

This week due to Brandon traveling, it is just Kriss and Ro on this week's review and boy do they have one. This week's film is Greta and it is an early contender for the dumbest movie of the year. While their scores are different, Kriss and Ro agree this is not the film that Neil Jordan thought he was making. Ro's score is only as high as it is because she got enjoyment out of laughing at the ridiculous moments in this film that weren't supposed to be funny but absolutely are. This film wastes performances of Isabelle Huppert, Chloë Grace Moretz and Stephen Rea (the last one being almost criminal). With a proper script, Greta could have been great but instead it always feels like a clueless interpretation of how people react to stalking.

A young woman befriends a lonely widow who's harboring a dark and deadly agenda towards her.
