Kriss and Dpalm review the latest episode The Flash, Memorabilia. We geek out about some of the items in the Flash Museum, wonder if the show is really going to make Red Death (the evil Bruce Wayne from Earth -52 who is connected to the Speed Force) a villain for an upcoming show and discuss what really might be going on with Grace (Is she controlling her Uncle?). This is a pretty straight forward episode but can have some big consequences later on down the line. When Sherloque wants to use a memory machine on Barry and Nora to help gain access to Grace's memories, Nora panics, fearing her parents will find out the secrets she's been keeping from them. Nora secretly decides to use the machine on her own which ends in disaster after she gets trapped inside Grace's mind. Barry and Iris go in after their daughter and Iris is brokenhearted by what she finds. Meanwhile, Ralph tricks Cisco into going out for a night out on the town.

Our interview series is back for 2019, and we kick things off by talking to my old college teammate Mike DeFazio. From finding a way to balance playing two sports at an Ivy League school to a very unorthodox path to coaching, he knows the impact a coach can have on a student athlete. And when the coaches who misuse trust and authority, Mike is a good reminder of the coaches we all had who did the job for the right reasons. Like what you hear? Kriss and Dpalm are back for the second part of their break down of the history of comic books. This episode we're tackling the Bronze Age and the Modern Age. Now the Bronze Age goes from approximately 1970 to 1985 and the Modern Age is from 1985 to the present. We think the Modern Age as it's officially broken out is a bit long and could technically be broken out into two more ages. We discuss key moments & books of the Bronze Age, the formation of Image Comics, the comic speculator market bubble bursting, how comics recovered and much more. These time periods in comics are personal to us because these are the conics and moments we grew up with. Like the last episode Kriss used two audible books for sources (both are also available on Kindle or Paperback): Superheroes! Capes, Cowls and the Creation of Comic Book Culture

In the first episode of I Talk Shit & Read, I had the pleasure of speaking with Tasha Suri about her debut novel Empire of Sand. What started out as a convo about the inspiration behind her story turned into a chat about everything from the Mughal Empire (think Taj Mahal), recognizing her own history in her writing, owning her voice, colonialism, a short geography lesson, my thoughts on the themes and relatability of her world and characters, the difficulty of fan-casting a movie when colorism is truly a thing, and why we definitely need to build a compound for supervillains. Guest: Tasha Suri Tasha Suri is a London-based librarian and author. Suri is witty, well-informed and hooked on good things like Bollywood films, history, and mythology. Her South Asian influenced fantasy is a blend of knowledge, heritage, and a damn good idea. Book Synopsis: Empire of Sand is set in a world inspired by medieval India. It's the tale of a girl named Mehr, the illegitimate daughter of a powerful nobleman and a woman from the exiled and despised nomadic people known as the Amrithi. Mehr inadvertently reveals that she's inherited - from her mother's bloodline - the ability to manipulate the dreams of sleeping gods. She swiftly draws the attention of the Empire's semi-immortal and extremely powerful religious leader known as the Maha. And that's when things go left... Shortly after we finished talking on January 17th, Variety broke the news that production companies Kronicle Media, Amyale, and Rebel Maverick partnered together to develop Empire of Sand into a television series. It's pretty safe to assume I'll be watching.

We're back and we all kind of wish we'd stayed away. The conclusion of The Book of Rebellion is full of the inconsistencies and trite plot machinations that have been plaguing the sophomore season of Black Lightning. Jennifer and Khalil return home and despite the fact that Jefferson has been searching for a witness against Tobias, he and Henderson spend about two hours debating if they should help Khalil by putting him in witness protection. Once Khalil is handed off to federal agents, Black Lightning and Henderson wash their hands of the whole thing like two dumb post-9/11 George Bushes and Khalil is taken by Tobias. Everything is coming up roses for Tobias. He gets Khalil and breaks his spine again. He also has Todd fully on his side and Todd is able to crack the briefcase MacGuffin from last season. It's an anti-climatic reveal as the briefcase seems to have information on specific Greenlight kids who may have powers. At this point, who knows if they're still alive or not. And there seems to be an implication that they were being held in the clinic that Rev. Clifton Powell refuses to sell to Tobias but if they are, who is monitoring them? Despite some decent acting from China McClain (Jennifer) and Christine Adams (Lynn), the writing was so full of plotholes and issues, that this episode was wholly unsatisfying. We'll (hopefully?) be back at the end of the next arc, The Book of Secrets. But if Black Lightning doesn't make some improvements, this may go the way of Gotham. Like what you hear? Arrow is back and we're jumping right into it like it never left. Not gonna lie, they've nailed Amell's fighting style to the point that Sea Shimooka is doing a great job emulate it as Emiko Queen. The show is also doing a good job of maintaining multiple threads:
There's a lot to like this episode. Just like The Flash, its clear that Amell was put on ice a bit this episode because he was shooting for the crossover but the writing handles it pretty well with him dealing with the reveal that he has a sister while Emiko and Rene handle the heavy lifting. The one issue we take (and this is no fault of the show) is the RIDICULOUS rules that WB puts on the Arrowverse shows. Ghost Initiative? IT'S THE SUICIDE SQUAD. You've called it that before. What are we doing? Listen to our review and let us know what you think. Kriss also has a theory that the seasons of Arrow are at their best depending on how bad the wigs are. Rene's future wig might raise Season 7 up the ranks using that theory. Oliver wants to get back to work and focus on his marriage, but Dinah wants him to track the new Green Arrow; Diggle and Lyla must answer to ARGUS about Diaz. Star Trek Discovery is officially back for Season 2 and do that means Super Tuesday Recap is back as well to review. Before we get into the first 2 episodes of Season 2, we discuss the 4 Short Treks. We're curious to see how they (if any) will fit into this season. Calypso and Brightest Star both stand out as some of our favorites. For the first 2 episodes, we talk about how much we love the growth of the crew of the Discovery from season 1. There seems to be a concerted effort to make sure the bridge crew is more involved this season and we love it. Also, Anson Mount is wonderful as Captain Pike (so much it makes us hate Inhumans) even more. Just two episodes in, this season is even more Star Trek than the first and we can't wait for more. Welcome to 2019 all! Shanna and the Doctor return with the newest episode of Supergirl which has our new Black woman character becoming someone so unforgivable we are actively rooting for her demise. Berlanti and company-what are you doing to us? I know we asked to see more Black women, but did you have to give her a role so wretched that every other word out of our mouth this episode was an expletive? We're going to talk about how diversity means nothing when characters act just like they would if they were white men. We also get some Brainy/Nia shipping action as he encourages her to become the hero she is destined to be, and Alex making a difficult and life-changing sacrifice on behalf of Kara. The Flash does a few things this week that give promise for the rest of the season. First, outside of the show, an explanation was given to why Grant wasn't in episode 10 a lot (he was on another set shooting for the Crossover). Giving the explanation plus taking Nora off the board this week shows a little bit better planning than in previous seasons. Also, the use of Officer Jones, a character that's been in the background since last season and we never even really knew his name, also helps create a world that feels more lived in. It was a nice callback and use of an existing character for a larger purpose. We also really like the use of Killer Frost and her issues with Caitlin helping Cisco with the cure. The differences between Ralph's detective skills and Sherloque's allow for both characters to fill a void but not feel repetitive. And finally, we were worried that last week's episode with more on Thawne would make Cicada feel pointless but the show is still keeping him interesting (well, more deadly than anything else) and we appreciate it. Welcome to MTR's latest foray into podcasting, a monthly space where we're going to help demistify mortgages for everyone out there. I know you're used to hearing me yell about comics and sports, but my biggest passion is educating others about their homeownership opportunities. To kick things off, Kriss and I take a walk down his homeownership path from first time homebuyer, to selling that home and now he's starting the building his new home as we talk. Take a listen, and see how that way out of making your landlord rich might be closer than you think. If you've got questions for our next podcast in February, shoot me an email at udpodcast@gmail.com and I'll do my best to answer any general questions that come in.

It's been a long time, we shouldn't have left you, without a podcast ep...well you get the point. The Doctor, Joseph and Parrish are back to wrap up season 11 of Doctor Who. We discuss our impressions of the last two episodes, the New Year Day episode, and the development of the companions. While we love how the series book ended Ryan and Graham's story, we did feel that it ultimately wound up being at the expense of Yaz, who we hope gets more to do in the 12th season. Confirmed for 2020 and with the entire crew in front and behind the camera returning, we have many more wonderful adventures to look forward to. We also review the Melanie McFarland Salon article about the many attempts to tear down the series in direct contradiction to the empirical evidence of the show's success, both in ratings and popularity. Additionally, we address the different approach to storytelling and how that worked to truly and cleanly reboot the series. Link to the Jinx Yeo comedy clip

Kriss, Ro and Brandon review M Night Shyamalan's conclusion to his "Unbreakable" trilogy, Glass. This movie had an opportunity to be something but just doesn't live up to the expectations and hype. The first problem being that for a film called 'Glass', it take too long to get the title character doing anything which is what audiences wanted to see. Unlike Unbreakable and Split, Glass doesn't stand on it's own and it's very clear that it's the end of a trilogy that was never supposed to be a trilogy. There are some elements to like (McAvoy is great and when Jackson gets to be the Mr. Glass we've waited 19 years for, he's great as well). Overall, your mileage may vary.

The Flash is back from winter break so that means Kriss & Dpalm are back for Super Tuesday Recap! While there are elements of this episode we like, we think it was kind of a slow stumble out the gate from break for the show. Particularly since the last 2 episodes were episode 100 and part of the Elseworlds crossover. Seems like an odd choice to come back from break and shelve Barry for most of the episode. We get what they were trying to do but that also leads to the second problem: While we love the Eobard Thawne reveal at the end of episode 100, it kinda leaves us not caring about Cicada anymore. Particularly when this episode focuses on Nora learning the wrong lesson and agreeing to give Thawne in the future a chance. It makes us think that Thawne is the main villain we should care about and while Cicada has been good, it really undermines him. But all that said, we're willing to wait it out and see how things turn out. Particularly since there are still some good elements sprinkled throughout this episode. We get the hint that we could be getting some Young Rogues at some point in the future and Cisco turns into Hank McCoy (This "meta cure" is a bad idea). https://oembed.libsyn.com/embed?item_id=8290676 Kriss and Dpalm record the Mailbag at the end of every month. Ro reviews The Upside with Kriss. The film stars Kevin Hart, Bryan Cranston and Nicole Kidman. Those last two names probably explain why Kevin Hart is currently on his non-apology apology tour right now for his previous homophobic jokes. Ironically The Upside is one of the first films to show Kevin Hart with a bit more depth in his acting and with a character that actually grows. Too bad Kevin Hart took none of that character growth and applied it to his own life. Overall the film is okay. Ro actually gives the film a 7 during the audio review but while writing a review for it knocked it down to a 5. The film isn't as good as the French version ("Les Intouchables") which gives a bit more depth and background to Phillip (Cranston).
