Sorry for the delay folks but we're finally back to wrap up *checks notes* Captain Marvel Part 3? Or is this Shazam? Yeah we waste no time in this episode addressing the elephant in the room: What the heck do we call this character? Kriss & Dpalm have varying opinions but one thing that is agreed upon is that this is all DC's fault. They destroyed Fawcett because the "Superman Clone" was more popular than Superman, then tried to resurrect the character 20 years later after the name had already been registered by Marvel. So we're covering the ups and downs of the "Original Captain Marvel". We cover the Whiz Comics years, the DC relaunch, Roy Thomas' interesting yet unfinished attempt at the character, Jerry Ordway's Power of Shazam and the struggle of DC trying to figure out what to do with the character that once outsold Superman

Also...one of you asked for this so Dpalm also does a quick explanation of Marvelman. Just know it involves Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison. Buckle in folks. You're in for a ride.

Issues:

Early Fawcett Years:

  • Whiz Comics #2 - First appearance of Billy Batson/Captain Marvel, Shazam (the Wizard) and Dr. Sivana
  • Captain Marvel Adventures #18 - First Appearance of Mary Bromfield/Batson
  • Whiz Comics #25 - First Appearance of Freddy Freeman
  • Master Comics #21 - First Appearance of Captain Nazi
  • Captain Marvel Adventures #26 - First Appearance of Mister Mind
  • The Marvel Family #1 - First Appearance of Black Adam
  • Shazam! A Celebration of 75 Years - Contains more than the Fawcett comics but is a good catch-all
  • The Shazam!  Archives
  • The Shazam! Family Archives

The DC Relaunch

Kriss, Ro and Brandon review Jordan Peele's latest film, Us. This is a film that's difficult to process after just one viewing. Peele plays with the horror genre that feels both as a homage and something completely new. It's a contradiction of a mainstream yet niche film. The weird and confusing parts don't distract from the entertainment value and great performances. Lupita Nyong'o puts in one hell of a performance and she's not alone.

We dive into what we enjoyed about the film, what gave us pause (not necessarily in a bad way) and why it's needs to be seen multiple times to really grasp what the film is trying to show us.

The Flash has done a great job this season fixing a lot of the issues we've had with previous seasons. Even down to timing episodes right so they fit with breaks. Nora having to reveal that....scratch that...Sherlocke revealing that Nora has been working with Thawne and Barry putting her in the Pipeline is the perfect way to go into a break. Add in the way they keep evolving the threat of Cicada and they're hitting on all cylinders. Grace Cicada is frighteningly powerful and seemingly doesn't have the weaknesses of her uncle.

We had to double up on Arrow episodes this week. First in Training Day, the SCPD (out of all the incompetent fictional police departments) has the audacity to try to get Oliver and the team to follow their procedures. It goes about as well as you'd expect. Then in Star City 2040, Mia Smoak wants all the smoke. Plus, Rene of the future snitches at least 2 times this episode. It's in his DNA.

Also, we're quickly approaching the end of the season and this can't end well. Something terrible has to happen for everyone to split so drastically.

Listen to me now, believe me later!  WHAT DID I TELL YOU?!?  I TOLD Y'ALL IT WAS EVE!

And now we know it was under the direction of Lex, who has now pulled together his iconic Tessmacher/Otis sidekick lineup.  My ship has sailed with a long awaited kiss between Nia and Brainy (She don't have to know Brainy, lean into it!), and J'onn finally goes off the deep end as Manchester wanted, causing him to fall deeper into a conflict of crisis.  Lena perfects the Haranel (forgive my spelling) only to be double crossed by her brother (girl DUH!), and Lex finally meets Supergirl face to face.  The show slowed down for more character development and introduction, and seems to have perfected the ability to do so without feeling like it has slowed down.

It's finally here. Our discussion for the final three episodes of The Gifted season 2. We talk about how the season wrapped up, how the uncertainty of a season 3 might have changed some of the final story points and why we hope there is a season 3. While Reeva didn't get the full development we want, it feels as if the rest of the main cast did. Reed and his sacrifice really worked for us as a complete arc. Also...when you're the only member of your family without super powers, packing heat is a necessity as Caitlin proves.

Kriss, Ro & Brandon review the weird but entertaining and engaging film from Milorad Krstic,  Ruben Brandt, Collector. This is Krstic's first feature film and it's pretty damn good. It's also weird. Very very weird. The use of famous artwork and the animation style to tell a heist story is innovative. The film is like an animated version of Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol. Yeah...it's that crazy. It's definitely not for everyone but if you're up to the challenge, it's definitely worth checking out (but you cannot do anything else while you watch or it will be even more confusing).

Four expert thieves attempt to steal every famous artwork that is haunting their mutual psychotherapist. A detective attempts to find out who the "Collector" is.

Kriss and Dpalm are back to review the latest episode of The Flash (sorry for the delay in getting it out). We really are loving this season and how everything is coming together. This season has been doing a great job of keeping Cicada an interesting and challenging villain while also having the Thawne threat around the corner. And the twist with the second Cicada now has us asking all kinds of questions (Time travel? Another Earth?). Also add into all that the fact that Barry has really become the motivational hero we know him to be (even giving Joe West Black Fatherhood Moment talks back to Joe himself), this has all just been a fun show to watch this season

Oh and we do a quick and short talk of the Endgame trailer because...we have to. Speaking of Endgame, if you want to watch Endgame with the MTR Network crew in LA or in DC, tickets for our private viewings go on sale Monday, March 18th at Noon est. Check Endgame.MTRNetwork.Net for more details.

Barry channels that great Flash motivation to convince Cicada to take the meta human cure. Orlin agrees, Cicada is defeated and everyone lives happily ever after…sike just kidding. Of course it didn’t’ work and now everyone is fucking screwed

First things first. Kriss will probably be kicked off this podcast and removed from having editorial control over the title of episodes as well as episode art. Anyway, Star Trek Discovery Season 2 continues to be amazing and continues to surprise us. We're starting to get episodes that connect to the Short Treks from before the season as well as connecting all the previous episodes to the search for Spock & the mystery of the Red Angel. Is the Red Angel changing the past to save the future or are they CORRECTING the past to save the future? Also, episode 8 opens with a recap with the actual footage of the pilot from the Star Trek pilot? This show is really doing something special.

Articles we also discuss on this review:

Another great episode but can anyone explain why Kara left the Fortress hide a key under a snow rock exposed next to the keyhole?  Clark needs to come back and repossess his property!

This week we get another exciting episode as Manchester Black continues to ramp up the mayhem with his Elite, Lena digs deeper into her project, under some deadline that is driving her to isolate and singularly focus, Dreamer stays ramped up on 10, and J'onn struggles with going HAM vs keeping his promise to remain peaceful.  Brainy rallies the alien troops for a peaceful protest against Ben Lockwood's MAGA rally, and a shocking ending leaves The Doctor dropping a theory on Shanna that leaves her a little speechless.

Arrow is back and we're having any more questions about what goes horribly wrong to give us the future we see in the flash forwards. William says he never knew about Mia because Oliver and Felicity stopped contacting him when he moved in with his grandparents but we see that Oliver tried to contact William (a lot) but never got a call back. And why is Connor saying he's Diggle's adopted son and not his biological son? And why is Diggle the only one that knew that Felicity had a daughter? Throw in the fact that in the present time we find out that Dante is played by Adrian Paul aka Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod and well...the rest of Arrow's run is shaping up to be very very interesting.

Team Arrow is all bout family which is why all their families are fucked up. Meanwhile, Oliver & Argus find out Dante is Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod so they’re completely fucked

Kriss, Ro, Brandon and Ashley review the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain Marvel. This is Marvel's first solo film for a female character and they do a pretty good job. Brie Larson does a great job (despite all the white fanboy hate prior to the film) and really owns the role of Carol. We also talk about how Lashana Lynch and Akira Akbar should be getting more praise for their roles in this film and how their characters help this movie avoid some tropes that happen with female characters. This film also serves as a semi-origin story for Nick Fury and fits well into filling in th history of the MCU and how we got to the point of bringing the Avengers together.

Stay for the two after credit scenes (the first being the one to get you hype for End Game) and the Stan Lee Tribute and cameo will make you cry.

The Flash is finally back from a small break and Dpalm & Kriss are here to pick right back up with the review. This was a fun episode. Clearly the show has been working on it's CG cause an episode had both King Shark and Gorilla Grodd looking pretty good. Also, as a bit of a tangent, the epic meeting between these two gets Kriss & Dpalm to talk about their VERY RATIONAL fear of bears...aka land sharks. Other things we liked in this episode:

  • Welcome back Jesse L Martin
  • Of course the "Meta-Cure" was used against someone's will. We're X-Men fans. We know how this turns out
  • What's up with Sherloque acting weird when the team mentions Harry from Earth-2?

Also we talk about the news of Arrow coming to an end next season with a 10 episode run and how much they've earned a proper send off.

In the second episode of I Talk Shit & Read, I spent some time with  L.L. McKinney (aka Elle) about her debut novel A Blade So Black.

Guest: L. L. McKinney

Because the Twitterverse has no chill, we started off discussing an online controversy surrounding a YA novel, Blood Heir, the author eventually decided to pull in order to address racially problematic elements in the writing. (I wanted to hyperlink to an article about the issue but damned if I'll promote clicks to skewed hot-takes that just want to bash anyone who vocally took issue with the novel or the marketing direction. I asked about Elle focused on pointing to the initial marketing "blurb" labeling the story "color-blind" and how that in-and-of-itself is problematic, in publishing and in life.  Our conversation took off from there.

Elle went on to share how exploring fear, its physical effects, and a concept of accountability influenced the creation of "Wonderland." How race is processed by readers (and writers) and how it matters beyond being a buzz word even in fantasy.  Our discussion touched on other real-life elements that impact her writing and how that helped this world evolve. We talked about what she hopes to see in the coming television adaptation from Lionsgate.

And because I have no sense, the conversation went left on more than one occasion. Thankfully, Elle was happily on board; probably because she knows she's gonna kill a character I like somewhere along the way...

A Blade So Black:

After barely escaping an attack with her life, Alice agrees to be trained to fight Nightmares invading her world. But to do so, she'll have to juggle a protective mother, school, friends, and her secret job as a slayer.  Set in an alternate Atalanta and a Wonderland reimagined, A Blade So Black is the tale of a young girl coming of age carrying a burden she'd like nothing better than to put down driven to sacrifice in order to save the world knowing she'll have to live with the consequences.

If you like your friends snarky and jokes relatable and your heroes to carry swords, A Blade So Black may be the trip down the rabbit hole for you. This is not your typical fairy tale but it looks to have the makings of one helluva adventure.

Plus, the second installment, A Dream So Dark hit shelves on September 24, 2019.

We got all the faves back this week!  Ben Lockwood reminds folks that even though he's a professor what you will NOT do is think you can come for his throne.  Ben basically told the wannabe usurpers to put some respect on his name.  It's interesting watching Ben navigating what conferred legitimacy means to a grassroots movement, even if it is steeped in bigotry and exclusiveness.  Kara and the Superfriends (Brainy, Nia as Dreamer, and J'onn) take on Manchester and the Elite (Menagerie, Hat, and a Morae) in a battle that causes Kara to question her alliances, her allegiances, and her approach to crime fighting.  The best thing about Manchester is that even if you disagree with his methods, you have to admit underneath all of that his cause is one of righteousness-he's trying to protect those who are being victimized.  Clearly, Kara had to make a tough choice in this episode, but it also caused her to get Alex on board by appealing to her true nature.  We also discuss whether or not Haley can be redeemed after the terrible start the show gave her, and James vs. Lena in the ethics of granting powers to humans under a government contract.

This week due to Brandon traveling, it is just Kriss and Ro on this week's review and boy do they have one. This week's film is Greta and it is an early contender for the dumbest movie of the year. While their scores are different, Kriss and Ro agree this is not the film that Neil Jordan thought he was making. Ro's score is only as high as it is because she got enjoyment out of laughing at the ridiculous moments in this film that weren't supposed to be funny but absolutely are. This film wastes performances of Isabelle Huppert, Chloë Grace Moretz and Stephen Rea (the last one being almost criminal). With a proper script, Greta could have been great but instead it always feels like a clueless interpretation of how people react to stalking.

A young woman befriends a lonely widow who's harboring a dark and deadly agenda towards her.

We're back to wrap up our two-part Captain Marvel series with two of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe: Monica Rambeau and Carol Danvers. These are not only some of the most power female characters in the Marvel stable but two of the most powerful characters ever. We start first with Monica Rambeau, the first black female character to become a member of the Avengers. While Monica has never really had her own on-going solo series, she played a significant role on the Avengers in the 80's (even becoming Chairwoman of the group). Then we move onto the life of Carol Danvers. With the launch of Ms. Marvel in 1977, Carol not only gets super powers  but becomes Marvel's feminist icon answer to DC's Wonder Woman. Unfortunately an extremely poor decision to have Carol raped (even though the book is written as if she's not) really sets the character back. Chris Claremont takes Carol back and brings her into his X-Men book which starts Carol on her long, slow return to prominence and eventually taking the tile of Captain Marvel.

Coming next month, the original Captain Marvel from Fawcett/DC: Shazam!

This was another great episode.  Lena agrees to enter a government contract to make superpowered humans to fight the alien menace.  Kara comes to terms with how her relationship with Alex must evolve for Alex to become a healthier person. We learn Haley has a family but really don't give a damn because of how they introduced her-she can still kick the bucket.  We discuss J'onnz budding PI career, Nia coming into her birthright, Brainy's cluelessness, and Jimmy being the worst boyfriend on Earth 32.

We're back for our final Black Critic Roundtable before the 2019 Academy Awards (not the last time we're getting together though). Unfortunately the ladies (Ro, Shanna & Joi) couldn't join us for this episode so it's just Kriss, Brandon and Tim on this episode. 2018 was a really GREAT year for films and directors, unfortunately the nominees for Best Director and Best Picture don't really reflect that. There are some glaring omissions here (The snub of Barry Jenkins and A Beale Street Could Talk is unforgivable). We discuss what films and directors we don't think should be nominated, what we think will win out of the films that were nominated, what we want to win and what films/directors we think were overlooked.

Best Director

  • Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman)
  • Pawel Pawlikowski (Cold War)
  • Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite)
  • Alfonso Cuaron (Romo)
  • Adam McKay (Vice)

Best Picture

  • Black Panther
  • BlacKkKlansman
  • Bohemian Rhapsody
  • The Favourite
  • Green Book
  • Roma
  • A Star is Born
  • Vice

MTR and UDPod are proud to present a very unique walk through the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As a lead into this April and Avengers: Endgame, DPalm and his much better half SPalm are rewatching the entire MCU. Over 10 years of movies have led to Endgame, and we are back with the movie that shook the MCU to it's very core: Winter Soldier. We talk about how this shook the world that had been built since Iron Man, and the massive left turn Marvel took with Guardians of the Galaxy. Joss Whedon bid farewell to the universe with Avengers: Age of Ultron, and we see how each of these films made everything feel bigger while servicing the individual arcs of the characters.

Brandon, Ro and Kriss are review How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. Branon and Ro talk about the how the third is a fitting continuation of the first two movies. This is a franchise that has grown so much since the first film debuted. There is some really good character development for all the characters (even Toothless) and should be really enjoyable for the whole family.

When Hiccup discovers Toothless isn't the only Night Fury, he must seek "The Hidden World", a secret Dragon Utopia before a hired tyrant named Grimmel finds it first.

Black Lightning: The Book of Secrets Chapters 1-3

We're winding down folks and unless something changes soon, Black Lightning might have to go the way of Gotham. Unfortunately, "The Book of Secrets" isn't officially done (chapter 4 doesn't drop until March 4th) so we can't definitively say this chapter was better than The Book of Rebellion but watching the show by book was a slight improvement.

Tobias disappointed with the reveal of his master plan. While it seemed like he was gearing up for a massive takeover of Freeland, his goals are pretty small potatoes. Tobias plans to rent out the pod kids and a group of special pods from Markovia to the highest bidder. He's gone from dealing drugs to dealing metahumans. We had higher hopes for him too.

Anissa is focused on Grace who can't control her powers. Grace leaves town so Anissa uses the resources of the Black Cave to dig into Grace's past. Turns out she was trafficked and forced into prostitution as a child and Grace Choi is the identity she created for herself once she escaped. This is a great potential storyline (especially if Tobias captures Grace and tries to force her into his Rent-A-Meta program) but we're not sure if the writers will capitalize on this or drop the ball again.

Lynn and Jefferson are finally getting it together in their personal lives but their professional lives are a mess. Jefferson has the opportunity to get his school back from Massa Lowry but lets him stay in charge because Jefferson doesn't feel that he can fully give his attention to the school. This would be noble if Jefferson and everyone else would stop blaming him for not being around ONCE! One whole time he was being Black Lightning instead of Jefferson Pierce and he almost died and everyone is acting like he's been a consistently negligent principal.

Lynn refuses to work with Dr. Jace who has been brought back into the fold since the Markovians want to abduct her and Lynn to work on their secret metahuman project. Because Lynn refuses to be in the same room as Jace, she doesn't realize that Jace is secretly working with Tobias and when Tobias comes to take the pod kids, Jace escapes as well. Currently, Jace is needed because she knows about the pods and she was the scientist who started the Markovian project. Only one of the Markovian pods has been opened and it contains one of the Masters of Disaster, Shakedown (Hosea Chanchez). This partnership is ripe for disaster (no pun intended) since Shakedown is holding a grudge against Jace and Tobias will get rid of anyone who becomes expendable (R.I.P. Todd, we hardly knew ye)

Finally, Jenn is holding down the only truly compelling storyline on the show. Despite Reverend Holt's prayers (R.I.P. Rev), having his spine pulled out is the final nail in Khalil's coffin. He dies after a lovely scene where Jenn goes into his mind and gives them one last dance at prom. But now that Khalil is dead, Jenn is filled with a lot of rage. Combined with the fact that she may be more powerful than a nuclear bomb, Perenna tells Jenn she has to get this under control before she literally explodes. Right now, Jenn's struggle to control her powers and her quest for vengeance is the best reason to watch Black Lightning. China's acting is great and for a superhuman teen, Jenn as a character is pretty relatable.

We'll see what happens in March as we close out The Book of Secrets but right now, Black Lightning isn't the show we fell in love with even with its moments of fun. Check out the full podcast and let us know how you feel.

Star Trek Discovery Season 2 continues to be a great season. We have so much to discuss, laugh about, cry about and celebrate. What more could we ask for for these last 3 episodes?

Topics:

  • The show keeping the Star Trek exploring elements while still working towards the search for Spock
  • Episode 4 is Saru's "Flu Game"
  • If you don't want us to think about what Kelpien tastes like, don't put Saru on a bed of lettuce
  • L'Rell and the Klingons are getting closer to the Klingons we know and we like how they're doing it
  • Emperor Georgiou back...and now she's a member of Section 31
  • Ash Tyler has the worst life ever
  • Tilly & her imaginary friend
  • Dr. Hugh Culber is officially back. Stamets' man returns and so does the most loving relationship on the show
  • and much much more!

We love this show so much and we can't wait to see where they go next.

This week's Arrow episode hits us with a big reveal: Mia is really Mia Smoak. Which means we have a lot of questions about how things work out in the future. How is it that William wasn't aware that he had a half sister (How did no one else know for that matter?)? Why does Mia use Felicity's last name and not Oliver's? What happens to cause such a split with the Queen family?

The flash forwards this season have brought us back to the feeling of having so many questions and theories about what is going to happen. Is it possible at some point the show does a flash forward and we are following the kids of the original Team Arrow? So many thoughts.

William snitches to his grandparents on Oliver & Felicity while Oliver's old prison buddy Stanley shows up proving William's point. Dinah’s never going to get her shot as a contestant on The Voice and Curtis gets the fuck outta dodge. And Felicity got all that protection for the front door of her home but didn’t think to use any in the bedroom. Oh and….necessary roy flips back dawg

Kriss, Ro and Brandon review Happy Death Day 2U, the sequel to the 2017 Happy Death Day. We really do enjoy these films and while the sequel isn't as tight of a story as the first, it's still pretty good and enjoyable. The secret to this film is that, like the first, it doesn't take itself too seriously. Jessica Rothe is once again great in this film and knows when to switch from physical, silly comedy to portraying more serious and heavy emotions. It also helps that they seem to be pulling a Justin Lin/Fast & the Furious and moving the film out of just being a slasher and to incorporating more Sci-Fi elements.

Bottom line: If you liked the first film, you're going to enjoy this one as well.

Kriss, Ro, Brandon and Shanna get together to review Alita: Battle Angel. So full disclosure, Kriss is NOT happy about this film and he's not necessarily wrong. But it really comes down to what you're looking for in this film. If your only focus is a film that looks beautiful (probably one of the best looking films you'll see this year) and some really kick ass action sequences, this might be worth checking out. The problem is, it's still a James Cameron script and with that comes all the issues that accompany James Cameron movies. Ro discusses what the film should have been about had they been more faithful to the Manga and that probably would have been a better film.

We have a good (and sometimes heated) discussion about this film. Give it a listen.

This week's flash gives us the staple of the Flash universe: Time Travel. This season has done a good job of having Nora learn some of the same lessons that Barry had to learn early in his career as the Scarlet Speedster but they also have larger implications. After Barry gives Nora the same talk Jay gave him after Barry created the Flashpoint timeline, Nora realizes Thawne might not be telling the whole truth about the changes they're making. Also, why does Thawne need Cicada's dagger destroyed? We're very intrigued.

We also talking about Carlos Valdes leaving the show and end by laughing at Ehtan Van Sciver's online temper tantrums.

Kriss Synopsis: It’s so hard to find good help these days.  XS and the team can’t keep themselves alive for 52 minutes while Barry goes to speed up the meta cure; Meanwhile The book of Ralph returns and Cisco does a remake of 50 first dates called 52 Worst First dates

Carol Danvers makes her live action debut as Captain Marvel next month. To prepare, Kriss and Dpalm are tackling the mantle of Captain Marvel. We're focusing on the three main characters to hold the title in the Marvel Universe (We'll be covering Fawcett/DC's Captain Marvel/Shazam next month): Mar-vell, Monica Rambeau and Carol Danvers.

But even before that, we start with a little bit of a crash course in the background of the Kree & the Skrull since they're not only playing a heavy role in the upcoming movie but are integral in the backgrounds of Mar-Vell and Carol. Then we focus on the life, death and legacy of Mar-Vell. His death due to cancer is probably the most impactful death and the one that will never be undone.

Episode 2 we'll do a deep dive into Monica and Carol so make sure you subscribe so you don't miss it.

The 150th episode of Arrow is here and that means Kriss & Dpalm are back to review. Dpalm was a little disappointed in this episode. He was hoping for the entire episode to be shot like a documentary and not filming them shooting the documentary. And he has a good point cause there are some things that could have been handled better if done that way. But there are still some good story elements in this episode and we're getting Team Arrow back together officially for the first time this season. Much like The Flash we're intrigued by the possibilities with the storyline taking place in the future. We see the return of Connor and we're seeing how the future shown in the Legends episode Star City 2046 is changing but still familiar. The possibility of the show moving on without Stephen Amell is looking more and more possible.

We're finally back to review the last 4 episodes of season 2 of The Gifted (episodes 10 - 13) and...we're out of pocket almost immediately into the episode. Dpalm takes a moment to gloat about how unredeemable and evil Jace Turner (aka Evil Ass Cory Booker) is. Jace is so evil even Kriss' Villain Agenda has denounced him. And the episode goes downhill from there:

  • The optics and way this show handled Jace & race was perfect
  • Andy's dick is still not his friend
  • Lauren getting drawn to the dark side and Kate is NOT helping
  • Lorna's crazy ass is really bad at being undercover
  • Erg aka Not-Bishop puts John in his place then steals his girl
  • Reeva hires terrorist mutants and his working with not-Bill O'Reilly...what is her plan?

And there's more! Give it a listen & let us know what you think of this season so far.

Since Kriss never saw the other films, he wasn't bothered by some of the issues that Ro and Brandon had. The film does feel like it's trying to hard and is a bit forgettable, but it's still an overall good movie. The songs can be annoying though, so be prepared.

Kriss and Dpalm are back to review the latest episode of The Flash. But before that, Kriss debuts a new way to open the show (much to Dpalm's dismay) by making up his own synopsis for the episode. This is a thing now. This is happening folks. Get used to it. Anyway, we talk about the Barry & Ralph teamup that shows that playing Red Dead Redemption can pay off in real life. We also wonder if the show will address why Iris doesn't use the team's resources and backup when she breaks into Cicada's house and almost gets caught. And finally...what's going on with Thawne? How does he know so much about Sherloque? Why is he still wearing Well's face in the future? Something isn't right here and we're trying to get to the bottom of it.

Brandon, Ro and Kriss review the directorial debut of Emma Forrest, Untogether.  This film is definitely an acquired taste. It focuses on Tara (Lola Kirk) and Andrea (Jemima Kirk) who play two sisters who are dealing with their own varying issues in terms of getting their lives together. The film is shot extremely well and has some really great performances. But the story can make it hard to connect to or feel for any of the characters involved. Listen to our review as we discuss the various opinions on this film and who we think the audience is and who might want to skip checking it out.

Andrea is a recently sober writer whose career has stalled since she published her debut novel several years ago. She strikes up an affair with Nick, a doctor-turned-writer who is hailed for his wartime memoir. At the same time, her sister Tara, a massage therapist dating an aging rock star, finds herself inexorably drawn to a newfound religious zeal and, particularly, to a politically engaged rabbi.

This week was an emotional character study of Nia and her family, as well as the true origin of her hero Dreamer.  Nia's mom (played superbly by Kate Burton) screams hippie chic and is one of the few examples of the lackluster CW wig budget being appropriate for a change.  Whereas her mother acknowledges (eventually) and affirms her woman hood, her trash ass privileged ass entitled ass sister...well, just read all the expletives and you get the idea of what we thought of her.  In a traditional parallel story, we see the impact of J'onn's mind wipe on the fundamental nature of the Danvers sisters' relationship, and James continues to make a series of unfortunate and problematic decisions.

From Fast & the Furious basically becoming a superhero franchise to the FBI rolling up on Roger Stone to some really out-of-touch billionaires. There's a lot to dive into.

This episode of Arrow is actually the directorial debut of Arrow's very own David Ramsey. He did a great job as this episode gets us even closer to the Oliver from the comics. We really enjoy how this show has been doing callbacks to the first season. We also discuss the path forward for the show without Oliver and how possible it could be. Oh and there's a Supernatural rant here cause...what the hell folks?

The past comes back to haunt both Oliver and Laurel. Curtis is upset when he discovers that Diggle and Lyla have restarted The Ghost Initiative with Diaz, China White, Kane Wolfman and Carrie Cutter.

MTR and UDPod are proud to present a very unique walk through the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As a lead into this April and Avengers: Endgame, DPalm and his much better half SPalm are rewatching the entire MCU. Over 10 years of movies have led to Endgame, and we kick things off with a brief recap of Iron Man 1 and 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. We talk themes, evolution, and which movie stands head and shoulders above the others as the road to Avengers starts here!

Kriss and Dpalm review the latest episode The Flash, Memorabilia. We geek out about some of the items in the Flash Museum, wonder if the show is really going to make Red Death (the evil Bruce Wayne from Earth -52 who is connected to the Speed Force) a villain for an upcoming show and discuss what really might be going on with Grace (Is she controlling her Uncle?). This is a pretty straight forward episode but can have some big consequences later on down the line.

When Sherloque wants to use a memory machine on Barry and Nora to help gain access to Grace's memories, Nora panics, fearing her parents will find out the secrets she's been keeping from them. Nora secretly decides to use the machine on her own which ends in disaster after she gets trapped inside Grace's mind. Barry and Iris go in after their daughter and Iris is brokenhearted by what she finds. Meanwhile, Ralph tricks Cisco into going out for a night out on the town.

Our interview series is back for 2019, and we kick things off by talking to my old college teammate Mike DeFazio. From finding a way to balance playing two sports at an Ivy League school to a very unorthodox path to coaching, he knows the impact a coach can have on a student athlete. And when the coaches who misuse trust and authority, Mike is a good reminder of the coaches we all had who did the job for the right reasons.

Kriss and Dpalm are back for the second part of their break down of the history of comic books. This episode we're tackling the Bronze Age and the Modern Age. Now the Bronze Age goes from approximately 1970 to 1985 and the Modern Age is from 1985 to the present. We think the Modern Age as it's officially broken out is a bit long and could technically be broken out into two more ages. We discuss key moments & books of the Bronze Age, the formation of Image Comics, the comic speculator market bubble bursting, how comics recovered and much more. These time periods in comics are personal to us because these are the conics and moments we grew up with.

Like the last episode Kriss used two audible books for sources (both are also available on Kindle or Paperback):

Superheroes! Capes, Cowls and the Creation of Comic Book Culture

Marvel Comics: The Untold Story

  • Bronze Age (1970 - 1985)
  • Amazing Spider-Man The Green Goblin Lives publishes without the Comic Code Authority Seal
  • Relaxing of the Comic Code Authority Rules
  • Green Lanten/Green Arrow #85-86 Snow Birds Don't Fly story arc
  • Marvel Overtakes DC Market Share
  • The Death of Gwen Stacy
  • X-Men Giant Size #1 and the explosion of the X-Men
  • Superman The Movie and the fight for creator credits
  • Secret Wars
  • The debate over Crisis on Infinite Earths
  • Modern Age (1985 - present)
  • Where we break the Modern Age up and why
  • The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen
  • DC and Marvel Imprints
  • Image Comics is created
  • The speculator market and the crash of Comic Books
    • The Death of Superman

In the first episode of I Talk Shit & Read, I had the pleasure of speaking with Tasha Suri about her debut novel Empire of Sand. What started out as a convo about the inspiration behind her story turned into a chat about everything from the Mughal Empire (think Taj Mahal), recognizing her own history in her writing, owning her voice, colonialism, a short geography lesson, my thoughts on the themes and relatability of her world and characters, the difficulty of fan-casting a movie when colorism is truly a thing, and why we definitely need to build a compound for supervillains.

Guest: Tasha Suri

Tasha Suri is a London-based librarian and author. Suri is witty, well-informed and hooked on good things like Bollywood films, history, and mythology. Her South Asian influenced fantasy is a blend of knowledge, heritage, and a damn good idea.

Book Synopsis: Empire of Sand is set in a world inspired by medieval India. It's the tale of a girl named Mehr, the illegitimate daughter of a powerful nobleman and a woman from the exiled and despised nomadic people known as the Amrithi. Mehr inadvertently reveals that she's inherited - from her mother's bloodline - the ability to manipulate the dreams of sleeping gods. She swiftly draws the attention of the Empire's semi-immortal and extremely powerful religious leader known as the Maha. And that's when things go left...

Shortly after we finished talking on January 17th, Variety broke the news that production companies Kronicle Media, Amyale, and Rebel Maverick partnered together to develop Empire of Sand into a television series. It's pretty safe to assume I'll be watching.

We're back and we all kind of wish we'd stayed away. The conclusion of The Book of Rebellion is full of the inconsistencies and trite plot machinations that have been plaguing the sophomore season of Black Lightning.

Jennifer and Khalil return home and despite the fact that Jefferson has been searching for a witness against Tobias, he and Henderson spend about two hours debating if they should help Khalil by putting him in witness protection. Once Khalil is handed off to federal agents, Black Lightning and Henderson wash their hands of the whole thing like two dumb post-9/11 George Bushes and Khalil is taken by Tobias.

Everything is coming up roses for Tobias. He gets Khalil and breaks his spine again. He also has Todd fully on his side and Todd is able to crack the briefcase MacGuffin from last season. It's an anti-climatic reveal as the briefcase seems to have information on specific Greenlight kids who may have powers. At this point, who knows if they're still alive or not. And there seems to be an implication that they were being held in the clinic that Rev. Clifton Powell refuses to sell to Tobias but if they are, who is monitoring them?

Despite some decent acting from China McClain (Jennifer) and Christine Adams (Lynn), the writing was so full of plotholes and issues, that this episode was wholly unsatisfying. We'll (hopefully?) be back at the end of the next arc, The Book of Secrets. But if Black Lightning doesn't make some improvements, this may go the way of Gotham.

Arrow is back and we're jumping right into it like it never left. Not gonna lie, they've nailed Amell's fighting style to the point that Sea Shimooka is doing a great job emulate it as Emiko Queen. The show is also doing a good job of maintaining multiple threads:

  • Emiko and Rene working together
  • Felicity breaking the news to Oliver that he has a sister (and Oliver having to come to terms with that)
  • Diggle getting into hot water with Lyla
  • What we see happening in the future with Rene "Trump"

There's a lot to like this episode. Just like The Flash, its clear that Amell was put on ice a bit this episode because he was shooting for the crossover but the writing handles it pretty well with him dealing with the reveal that he has a sister while Emiko and Rene handle the heavy lifting. The one issue we take (and this is no fault of the show) is the RIDICULOUS rules that WB puts on the Arrowverse shows. Ghost Initiative? IT'S THE SUICIDE SQUAD. You've called it that before. What are we doing?

Listen to our review and let us know what you think. Kriss also has a theory that the seasons of Arrow are at their best depending on how bad the wigs are. Rene's future wig might raise Season 7 up the ranks using that theory.

Oliver wants to get back to work and focus on his marriage, but Dinah wants him to track the new Green Arrow; Diggle and Lyla must answer to ARGUS about Diaz.

Star Trek Discovery is officially back for Season 2 and do that means Super Tuesday Recap is back as well to review. Before we get into the first 2 episodes of Season 2, we discuss the 4 Short Treks. We're curious to see how they (if any) will fit into this season. Calypso and Brightest Star both stand out as some of our favorites.

For the first 2 episodes, we talk about how much we love the growth of the crew of the Discovery from season 1. There seems to be a concerted effort to make sure the bridge crew is more involved this season and we love it. Also, Anson Mount is wonderful as Captain Pike (so much it makes us hate Inhumans) even more. Just two episodes in, this season is even more Star Trek than the first and we can't wait for more.

Welcome to 2019 all!

Shanna and the Doctor return with the newest episode of Supergirl which has our new Black woman character becoming someone so unforgivable we are actively rooting for her demise.  Berlanti and company-what are you doing to us?  I know we asked to see more Black women, but did you have to give her a role so wretched that every other word out of our mouth this episode was an expletive?  We're going to talk about how diversity means nothing when characters act just like they would if they were white men. We also get some Brainy/Nia shipping action as he encourages her to become the hero she is destined to be, and Alex making a difficult and life-changing sacrifice on behalf of Kara.

The Flash does a few things this week that give promise for the rest of the season. First, outside of the show, an explanation was given to why Grant wasn't in episode 10 a lot (he was on another set shooting for the Crossover). Giving the explanation plus taking Nora off the board this week shows a little bit better planning than in previous seasons. Also, the use of Officer Jones, a character that's been in the background since last season and we never even really knew his name, also helps create a world that feels more lived in. It was a nice callback and use of an existing character for a larger purpose.

We also really like the use of Killer Frost and her issues with Caitlin helping Cisco with the cure. The differences between Ralph's detective skills and Sherloque's allow for both characters to fill a void but not feel repetitive. And finally, we were worried that last week's episode with more on Thawne would make Cicada feel pointless but the show is still keeping him interesting (well, more deadly than anything else) and we appreciate it.

Welcome to MTR's latest foray into podcasting, a monthly space where we're going to help demistify mortgages for everyone out there. I know you're used to hearing me yell about comics and sports, but my biggest passion is educating others about their homeownership opportunities. To kick things off, Kriss and I take a walk down his homeownership path from first time homebuyer, to selling that home and now he's starting the building his new home as we talk.

Take a listen, and see how that way out of making your landlord rich might be closer than you think. If you've got questions for our next podcast in February, shoot me an email at udpodcast@gmail.com and I'll do my best to answer any general questions that come in.

It's been a long time, we shouldn't have left you, without a podcast ep...well you get the point.

The Doctor, Joseph and Parrish are back to wrap up season 11 of Doctor Who.  We discuss our impressions of the last two episodes, the New Year Day episode, and the development of the companions.  While we love how the series book ended Ryan and Graham's story, we did feel that it ultimately wound up being at the expense of Yaz, who we hope gets more to do in the 12th season.   Confirmed for 2020 and with the entire crew in front and behind the camera returning, we have many more wonderful adventures to look forward to.  We also review the Melanie McFarland Salon article about the many attempts to tear down the series in direct contradiction to the empirical evidence of the show's success, both in ratings and popularity.  Additionally, we address the different approach to storytelling and how that worked to truly and cleanly reboot the series.

Kriss, Ro and Brandon review M Night Shyamalan's conclusion to his "Unbreakable" trilogy, Glass. This movie had an opportunity to be something but just doesn't live up to the expectations and hype. The first problem being that for a film called 'Glass', it take too long to get the title character doing anything which is what audiences wanted to see. Unlike Unbreakable and SplitGlass  doesn't stand on it's own and it's very clear that it's the end of a trilogy that was never supposed to be a trilogy. There are some elements to like (McAvoy is great and when Jackson gets to be the Mr. Glass we've waited 19 years for, he's great as well). Overall, your mileage may vary.

The Flash is back from winter break so that means Kriss & Dpalm are back for Super Tuesday Recap! While there are elements of this episode we like, we think it was kind of a slow stumble out the gate from break for the show. Particularly since the last 2 episodes were episode 100 and part of the Elseworlds crossover. Seems like an odd choice to come back from break and shelve Barry for most of the episode. We get what they were trying to do but that also leads to the second problem: While we love the Eobard Thawne reveal at the end of episode 100, it kinda leaves us not caring about Cicada anymore. Particularly when this episode focuses on Nora learning the wrong lesson and agreeing to give Thawne in the future a chance. It makes us think that Thawne is the main villain we should care about and while Cicada has been good, it really undermines him.

But all that said, we're willing to wait it out and see how things turn out. Particularly since there are still some good elements sprinkled throughout this episode. We get the hint that we could be getting some Young Rogues at some point in the future and Cisco turns into Hank McCoy (This "meta cure" is a bad idea).

Ro reviews The Upside with Kriss. The film stars Kevin Hart, Bryan Cranston and Nicole Kidman. Those last two names probably explain why Kevin Hart is currently on his non-apology apology tour right now for his previous homophobic jokes. Ironically The Upside is one of the first films to show Kevin Hart with a bit more depth in his acting and with a character that actually grows. Too bad Kevin Hart took none of that character growth and applied it to his own life.

Overall the film is okay. Ro actually gives the film a 7 during the audio review but while writing a review for it knocked it down to a 5. The film isn't as good as the French version ("Les Intouchables") which gives a bit more depth and background to Phillip (Cranston).

UDPod is back in 2019, and we’re getting things started off right with SPalm joining to ring in the New Year. We’re talking missed field goals, made free throws and of course the college football playoff. Kickers man. Kickers.

Guest: SPalm of the upcoming Between Two Palms
