Phenom, Ashley and Kriss review Eighth Grade. This is a great movie that is an early award season contender. This film is great not only for adults but for kids as well.

An introverted teenage girl tries to survive the last week of her disastrous eighth grade year before leaving to start high school.

Blindspotting continues a trend we've seen this year of relevant black films set in Oakland. This is a film you're going to need to see at least twice. There are things dropped at the beginning of the film that get tied back in at the end. Like Sorry to Bother You and Get Out, Blindspotting is going to lead to some good discussions and is a film everyone should see.

Phenom & Kriss discuss the movie as well as the Q&A Phenom sat in on after the film.

For a show that so many people complain about, Teen Titans Go seems to keep winning. The cartoon does fine and now, they've gone big time and are hitting theaters. Does it work? Of course it does. Find out what's so great about Teen Titans Go To The Movies and ask yourself why DC Animation understands these comic book characters but their live action side struggles.

The dog days of summer should belong solely to Major League baseball, but between the commissioner picking a fight with a modern day Babe Ruth, that player's team shooting back at the commissioner's office, and a pitcher's racist tweets, there just isn't room for America's former pastime. Plus, NBA and NFL off-seasons have been full of needed hold outs and insane guaranteed money. And we finish talking about redemption; who gets it, who shouldn't, an a path towards earning some.

We tried y'all.  We really did.  The series final episodes had a lot of filler, some great character moments, and set up something promising-and then wimped out in the end.  We discuss why 12 Monkeys did not live up to the promise of the first season, and the problem with comaparing apples and avocados.  We also discuss the problem with current fandom, particularly individuals being upset that not everyone likes the same thing, and how liking something doesn't make it good.

The Equalizer 2 is a perfect example of how Antoine Fuqua is king of the "B Movie". This isn't a knock against him as there need to be more quality B movie action films. To me a B Movie is a film that is good enough to keep your attention for 1 or 2 viewings but you eventually forget about it. While you watch it, you enjoy it but soon after, you've forgotten it. That explains The Equalizer 2. It knows that audiences are just here to see Denzel kicking ass and that as long as they get that, they won't care about the weak main story or uninteresting side plots.

I'll take more Equalizer 2 movies over things like The Commuter and ever other Liam Neeson film where he phones it in for 99.9% of the film.

We're continuing our Summer of Character Corner expansions with a new Character Corner/Comic Book Book Club hybrid. We're kicking off our discussion of Jonathan Hickman's Marvel run by discussing his wonderful Fantastic Four Run. Hickman fundamentally changed the Marvel Universe, starting in 2009 with Secret Warriors all the way through the 2015 Secret Wars. We'll be revisiting Secret Wars (And S.H.I.E.L.D.) next month and wrapping up with Avengers/New Avengers/Secret Wars. But we decided to start with Fantastic Four since the founding family of Marvel will be returning with their own solo book written by Dan Slott next month. Also, we've referenced this run a lot (From our Doctor Doom Part 3 to Black Panther to our Premium New Avengers/Secret Wars Comic Book Book Clubs) but we've never sat down and made it our focus. That changes now.

Issues/Reading Order:

Kriss, Phenom and Shanna review Boots Riley's Sorry to Bother You. This film is getting great reviews and for good reason. There is so much commentary and little messages sprinkled throughout this film. From the obvious in your face messages of corporate greed and the lack of worker rights to the smaller visual nods and messages in the background. Sorry to Bother You packs in a lot unpack and you're going to want to see it multiple times to get it all in. The film progressively gets weirder and weirder all the way up to the end but it feels natural because recent real life events have shown us how easy the "new normal" can become.

We attempt to tackle some of the topics and themes we saw in this film but there's so much more. Run, do not walk to see this film.

Oh and Tessa Thompson is a Goddess and we will watch anything she's in.

In an alternate present-day version of Oakland, telemarketer Cassius Green discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a macabre universe. Directed by Boots Riley and starring stars Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Danny Glover, Steven Yeun and Armie Hammer

Phenom and Kriss are back to review the latest try hard movie from Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Skyscraper. Phenom (wrongly) blames Kriss for having to see and review this movie which is utterly stupid and ridiculous. The Rock has one leg in the film and plays a non-bad ass, bad ass. It's just another paint by number dumb action film starring The Rock that isn't looking to make money domestically but rather capitalize on his fame in China.

If you wanted to see this film you were already going to see it no matter what the reviews said. And if you thought the whole concept was dumb and not worth your time then...you were right.

A father goes to great lengths to save his family from a burning skyscraper.

Phenom and Kriss review the latest film to join the MCU ranks, Ant-Man and the Wasp. Evangeline Lilly finally gets to suit up as the Wasp and shows why she's a badass. The film is fun and has carved out a nice spot in the MCU as being a film perfect for families and young kids. While the after credit scenes (there are 2) do address where this film falls in with Infinity War, on its own, this film requires very little investment in the other films.

As Scott Lang balances being both a Super Hero and a father, Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym present an urgent new mission that finds the Ant-Man fighting alongside The Wasp to uncover secrets from their past.

Kriss, The Doctor, and Rod from The Black Guy Who Tips discuss season 1 of a show that was done criminally wrong by SyFy. The Doctor decided to rewatch the movie and tries (unsuccessfully) to make a case as to why the movie is not so bad in concert with the show. We also discuss the diversity of characters, including strong women characters, the complexity of the relationships, daddy issues, and why Dominion is the show that ruined Buffy's Giles for us. Take a listen and then watch the show if you haven't yet!

We will be back for a review of season 2 on the premium feed!

Kriss is joined by Tim (@Peoplescrtic) to review the latest Purge film, The First Purge. This film is a prequel that shows how the Purge came about. Full disclosure, we're huge fans of this series as it's a lot more than the trailers have made it out to be. The First Purge drops the act and comes right out and reveals what we've always known: The Purge was about the government manipulating citizens in order to wipe out poor black and brown people. With the last two movies The Purge franchise has turned into a black survival horror series and it's been great.

We break down this film and the entire series and why we love it so much.

Hiroja and The Doctor are back for the series finale of 12 Monkeys.  This season picks up where the last one left off with our team fighting for their survival as Olivia, revealing herself as the true witness, attempts to eliminate them completely.  Using the technology that apparently was available in the facility the entire time, they splinter a portion of the facility to a new location.  Originally they think they've only moved in space, but it turns out they've created a T.A.R.D.I.S. and have also gone back in time to the very beginning of season 1.

Yes, it's just as ridiculous as it sounds.  This show is leaning in to the whole idea of "to hell with our own rules and mythology, let's just throw something at the wall and see if it sticks."  The first six episodes as reviewed here have some great moments.  After all, Cassie's face when Jennifer tells her and Cole to do "butt stuff only" is priceless.   The opening sequence of the first episode is well done, and the actors are wonderful in their roles.  In a show though where they keep breaking the rules they've made in the same episode and where there is nothing but a loop of time, it starts to get long and drawn out for no reason.  We discuss here what worked for the first half of the last season, what didn't work, and where the show appears to be heading next.  We also rant a bit about why SyFy refuses to embrace their heritage and allow their SCIENCE FICTION SHOWS TO BE GREAT!
