MTR Network

It's the end of June so it's time for another Mailbag episode. Kriss and Dpalm go through listener emails, hot topics and discuss their Pull-List for the month. This was a fun episode. We talk the changes at WB & DC and we have a real good conversation about what WB might need to do to turn their movies around (Hint: One-off movies isn't a bad idea), Brie Larson is a bad ass (That's My Captain Marvel) and Todd McFarlane is apparently desperate for Sony to distribute his Spawn movie.

Note, this was recorded before the DC Universe announcement. While DC Universe does seem to be bringing some good things (Titans, Young Justice Outsiders, etc) and will have some comics...it still doesn't seem to be bringing a DC Unlimited feature unfortunately. You can look at the announcement here.

Phenom and Kriss review Uncle Drew, starring Kyrie Irving, Lil Rel Howery, Shaquille O'Neal, Tiffany Haddish and Nick Kroll. This film is based off the Uncle Drew character Kyrie played for the Pepsi Max commercials a few years back. So how was it? Well...your mileage may vary. There are a couple of moments early on in the film that will let you know if you're either in or you're out. Some of the story is just really bad and doesn't make sense, but the moments with Irving dealing with the other players are just like the commercials that got this movie green lit in the first place.

Considering that most comedies that come out in a given year don't get good reviews, this film isn't that bad. It's certainly better than some of the other films we've seen this year.

Kriss and Dpalm are back with another...wait...is this a Character Corner or a  Comic Book Book Club? If you didn't know we're trying something new on the Character Corner podcast feed. We'll still be doing break downs of our favorite characters but in order to bring new content to the listeners, we're also going to be bringing some Comic Book Book Club episodes to the Character Corner. For this episode, we continue our dive into IDW's Transformers world with Chaos Theory, Last Stand of the Wreckers and Sins of the Wreckers.

Now I know what you're thinking "Transformers? Really?" But these books are fantastic. Go listen to the IDW Primer also on the feed as well as when we discussed the first 22 issues of More Than Meets the Eye. Once you get over the initial hump of reading about giant robots you'll realize how human and real these books are. They deal with a lot of relevant topics in today's world:

Topics:

Chaos Theory:

  • Optimus Prime...sorry...Orion Pax is a bad ass
  • Optimus and Megatron were almost on the same sidea
  • Never Forget: This is all Whirl's fault

Last Stand of the Wreckers

  • A stark reminder that War isn't fun and has lasting affects
  • Here are the rules to be a Wrecker....as the Wreckers break every single one of them
  • Overlord is a sociopath
  • The reason why Fortress Maximus had PTSD over Overlord and Garrius-9
  • The Autobots had their fair share of war crimes
  • We're not saying Impactor was right but...we understand.

Sins of the Wreckers

  • Calling Prowl a "prick" is a bit of an understatement
  • Who Springer really is

If you sign up for premium you can hear us talk about the end of More Than Meets the Eye which also tie into these issues as well.

Sometimes one of the greatest days of your life can turn in an instant  and you end up playing basketball for the Phoenix Suns. Such is the story of Mikel Bridges and his almost storybook ending for the local boy made good. We've got the EIC of the entire network with us this week to unpack the legacy of Ronda Rousey, the reintroduction of Puma to the world of men's basketball, Jameis Winston's uncanny ability to always make the worst choices, and a surprising voice speaking out against youth football. Plus, check out the NFL's rebuke of Cheeto Hitler.

They stuck the landing!  We got amazing Black Fatherhood, a satisfying conclusion to the Mon-El/Kara romance, a happy ending for Ruby and Sam, the departure of Winn, and a completely changed landscape in the Supergirl Universe.  And they have seeded Red Daughter of Krypton for season 4!

We encourage everyone starting this show to go ahead and watch season 1.  Although it's a struggle, we think it's important to see how the show has grown better with each season.

I don't mean to worry anyone, but it is my sworn duty to inform you all that Kevin Durant is in serious jeopardy of being soetnign of a sucker. No, no not for that thing that was just good business. His latest brusher with suckerhood has come with a GM popping off at the mouth, but when you've got Rich Fann from PWTorch on you can cover this, LeBron's place in history, Kawahi's place post-Spurs, Baseball trying to put horses back in barns, the place of the NFL holdout in 2018, and of course, Pro Wrestling.

It's been 14 years since the first Incredibles film. Has it been worth the wait? Absolutely.

Kriss, Phenom and Ashley discuss what works for this film and what might be at the bottom of the handful of negative reviews (Hint: It's cause the film centers women). This is a great film, continuing Pixar's tradition of having enough here for both adults and kids. Truth be told, there might be more here for adults than the kids.

Oh and the short film that airs before is designed specifically to punch you in the guts and give you all the feels.

Luke Cage Season 2 is bigger, more emotionally dark and better than Season 1. Season 2 really feels like it takes all the issues with the first season and addresses them to make this more of a black family crime drama than super hero show. And that's a good thing.

A lot of things work for this season:

  • A villain that challenges Luke both physically and mentally
  • The Family First theme of the season
  • Alfre Woodard's transformation with Mariah
  • The comic book teamups (Daughters of the Dragon, Powerman and Iron Fist)
  • The way the music is integrated into season and is important to understanding the themes and scenes
  • Not making Luke the central piece but leaving his character in a really interesting place
  • and more

Check out Kriss' video review as well as the audio review with Kriss & Phenom. We'll be back later with more in depth discussions of this season after it drops on the 22nd of June.

THEY KILLED DEMOS!  YOU BASTARDS!

The Doctor is furious that they killed one of our two favorite agents.  It's a great and action packed episode but did they have to kill our boy?  We watch as Papa J'onzz transfers his life experiences to J'onn in preparation for his passing, Alura arrives on Earth, and that dummy Coleville helps the Dark Priestesses resurrect Reign.  The finale promises to be heartbreaking.  Killing a major side character hit hard, and we get a feeling not everyone is going to make it out of the finale alive.  The only drawback-this was a great opportunity to give Reign a truly iconic look in her rebirth.  They didn't take it, but it definitely doesn't take away from the story.

What happens when the crazy white girl and the altar boy meet? Sparks ignite ... literally. Shanna, The Doctor and Parrish discuss the two-hour premiere of Marvel's Cloak & Dagger as well as everything from police brutality, The Talk and how this version of Ty and Tandy differs from their comic counterparts.

We can't wait to see what happens on this season of Cloak & Dagger and if these heroes will go from damaged teens to whole and healthy crime-fighters.

In another spectacular episode, we get the gun episode Arrow wish it would have done, J'onn preparing to say goodbye to his father, and the Dark Priestesses and their crew gaslighting Kara on her new home world.  We discuss the need for killing that is sometimes necessary, Mon El coming clean about his reason for staying, and guess at potential season deaths.  Lena is always prepared, and we wonder if that is going to be our lead in to season 4 because she could become the Big Bad, but, let's be honest, is she really wrong?

Kriss and Phenom review Hotel Artemis. If you go in expecting John Wick and to make that comparison, you're going to leave disappointed. There's been a lot of comparisons to John Wick because of the concept of criminals paying for membership to gain access to the Artemis which is a medical facility for bad guys. While there does seem to be some overlap in the idea of The Continental in John Wick and the Artemis, the comparisons between the films stops there. John Wick is clearly an action film while Hotel Artemis is less about action and more about the interactions of the characters. All the actors in this film play well off of each other and that offers for some really funny moments. Dave Bautista continues to be a stand out in every role he plays. Sofia Boutella is finally given a role where she can show how much of a badass she can be.

We also take a short detour in this review to talk about the upcoming movies for Dwayne Johnson (spoiler alert: they all sound terrible). How the hell are they making a San Andreas 2?

Kriss and Phenom review Ocean's 8, a spin-off film in the Ocean's 11/12/13 franchise. Sandra Bullock plays Debbie Ocean, Danny Ocean's sister, who is fresh out of jail with a scheme to pull off a huge heist. Debbie, along with her best friend Lou (Cate Blanchett) put together a team of ladies to help pull of the job at the Met Gala.

This film manages to pull of the same feel of Ocean's Eleven with the multi-layered heist, ulterior motives and inevitable road blocks, while still having it's own distinct feel and vibe. The film pays homage while not burdening the characters with "filling the shoes of men". It's a fun film that's going to leave audiences wanting more films.

In 2005, the Transformers comic license had found it's way to IDW Publishing and back into the hands of beloved Transformers scribe Simon Furman. Only, things didn't necessarily go according to plan in those initial issues as the man behind the keyboard spun a tale largely absent the well worn trappings of the franchise. To say the fan base was uneasy is to put it mildly so fresh off of the collapse of Dreamwave Productions.

Thirteen years, more issues than any other Transformers universe, and the longest running singular continuity across the Transformers landscape later, and it's all coming to a close with the arrival of Unicron. Originally made famous by film legend Orson Welles in the 1986 animated movie,  this planet eating threat will put a bow on the most critically successful era of Transformers ever.

To recap how we got here, we're joined by one of the hosts of the TransMissions Podcast, Charles Shelton and chart the entire IDW Transformers timeline from Infiltration to Unicron. We talk about how IDW has been forever transformed by the property, our predictions for how this is all going to unfold, and ask what's next for the nearly 35 year old franchise.

In two powerful episodes that keep up the fantastic pacing this season, we have a well handled Black Lives Matter episode when James is revealed to be Guardian to the cult headed by guest star Chad Lowe.  We got some delicious shade from Lena towards Supergirl, who was acting in typical 53% fashion expecting folks to forgive and forget on her terms.  We also got an episode that reveals not only is Kara's mom still alive, many other Kryptonians including the Dark Kryptonian that was guiding Reign is on Argo City, an experimental enclave designed by Kara's father as a last ditch attempt to save some of this planet.    The planet contains an element that they believe can rewrite Sam's DNA so that Reign is completely obliterated, but her people have become isolationists and want no part of Earth's issues.  The show just continues to get better and better and it's exciting to see what the end of the season will bring.
