It's the end of March (Is it just us or is 2018 flying by?) so that means, it's Mailbag Time. Kriss & Dpalm take listener emails, discuss topics in the news and go over their comic Pull List for the month. Normally, the episodes starts right off the top with emails, but this time, Kriss talks about the idiotic "ComicsGate" fools and the misconception that "The comic book industry isn't selling anymore".

Also, Kriss & Dpalm have some fun by casting their own Justice League movie and giving their high level pitch of what the film would be. You're not going to want to miss this episode.

Topics:

  • Emails
    • Pick a X-Men team for a story set in space
    • Black Panther breaks records
    • Are we done with Marvel's Netflix shows?
  • News
    • Fox delays New Mutants & X-Men: Dark Phoenix
    • Captain Marvel starts production
    • Should Disney launch Secret Warriors on their streaming service?
  • Topic of the Show:
    • Who would we cast for a Justice League film? What team would we pick? What's the story?
  • Pull-List (What we were reading this month)

Steven Spielberg is back at it again! This time with Ready Player One, a really fun movie that embraces not just gaming and 80's pop culture but pop culture in general. Kriss and Phenom are joined by Joi to discuss the film, what worked and what didn't, the toxic nature of gaming culture  (and how that can affect your viewing experience).

Legends of Tomorrow handles it's ensemble cast so well. This episode basically breaks out into three separate stores: Zari teaching Mick how to use his Totem, Sara & Ray going to find Ava and Wally, Nate & Amaya dealing with saving Amaya's grand daughter and getting her totem back. All three storylines are fairly separate from each other but they work so well. It gives a great mix of fun, serious and relevant to the overall story. Oh and Mick Rory is still a national treasure.

Listen as Kriss & Dpalm discuss this latest episode, I Ava.

Sara and Ray set out to find Ava when she disappears and Time Bureau agent Gary reveals a disturbing truth about her.

I don;t know how it happened, but I promise to never subject my audience to Cameron Hawkins from PWTorch's East Coast Cast two podcasts in a row again. This time, I'll allow the exception because Wrestlemania season is upon us, and it was time to talk about all the goings on outside the. We talk the rebirth of Daniel Bryan, we bid farewell to Mark Henry, and we bury Mr. "That's not gonna work for me Brother". Plus, we make fun of March Madness and Cam reminds us all why he's the worst.

  • Getting the dough
  • Paperwork
  • FAILURE

Diane and I also share some of the best (and worst) advice we've gotten about starting a business. We end the show talking about Ida b wells (Check out her books red record and mob rule in new orleans) and Robyn Kelly

Didn't see that coming. Five season in and Agents of Shield is still keeping us on our toes. I mean sure we knew that Fitz was struggling to come to terms with the darkness inside of him but to see him finally give in? Man...it kinda hurts. But it also makes sense when we think of all the stress and hardships that Fitz has been through. But will Daisy and Mack forgive him? That remains to be seen. Oh and Coulson gets even more reckless and goes off with General Hale and somehow that's not the biggest story here.

Kriss and Dpalm break down this excellent episode that might be one of the best of the series.

Fitz and Simmons are faced with one of their greatest fears as they search for a way to seal the rift.

In this episode Jennifer confronts her family for their lies of omission (Yes Lynne, omitting something is still a form of lying), Lynne goes full Black mom on her when she tries to catch an attitude, and Gambi runs a parallel investigation to Jefferson and Anissa.  Henderson finally gets out of his feelings and does some decent detective work (well...decent for him anyway).

This is an episode that was a bit of a drag for us.  The family dynamic is off for some reason compared to the beginning of the season.  Their angst doesn't feel earnest and we are found ourselves viewing the arguments/discussions as forced and written for television instead of organic the way they were at the beginning of the season.

Pacific Rim Uprising had one job: Follow up the 2013 film with a bit more action and a more dynamic lead. That's it. And on the surface, it does that. On the surface, the action in Pacific Rim Uprising is better than the original. And John Boyega can act circles around Charlie Hunnam. Yet this film then decides to add in a bunch of character it never develops and a convoluted plot that drags everything down.

Legends of Tomorrow continues to be the best show in the Arrowverse. This episode brings back Matt Ryan's Constantine (who is rumored to be a show regular next season) and does a great job of mixing seriousness with humor. We discuss what works really well this episode and why this show handles its large cast so much better than other shows.

When Mallus' power over Sara resurfaces, she unwittingly becomes the bearer of one of the Totems. Rory must conquer his dark side in order to wield his own Totem power to help save the crew. Meanwhile, Agent Sharpe notices that something is wrong and recruits someone unorthodox to help.

It all started with an idea. 10 years ago Marvel Studios launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe and nothing was the same again. Ten years and 18 (soon to be 19) films and over 15 BILLION dollars. It’s the highest grossing movie franchise of all time and Marvel Studios is one of the most innovative companies and movie studios there is. So how did it all start? We break it down and go over the history of Marvel Studios from creation all the way up to our reaction to the Infinity War trailer. So strap in and give it a listen.

Phase 1:

  • Iron Man
  • The Incredible Hulk
  • Iron Man 2
  • Thor
  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Marvel’s The Avengers

Phase 2:

  • Iron Man 3
  • Thor: The Dark World
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • Ant-Man

Phase 3:

  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Doctor Strange
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming
  • Thor: Ragnarok
  • Black Panther
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp
  • Captain Marvel
  • Avengers 4

Kriss & Dpalm review this week's episode of Agents of SHIELD, Principia. The last two episodes have made us want to go back and watch the previous seasons, particularly Season 3. We had to go back and remind ourselves just what happened with Werner von Strucker in that third season because he's been brought in Season 5. This is all adding fuel to the fire of our Franklin Hall (Graviton) theory. It also makes us wonder who else might show up. What if Daisy never gets her powers back but everyone just thinks she does? Could we get Eden? What is General Hale really up to and is she Leviathan? So many questions and we still have a lot of episodes to give us answers. Oh and Deke realizing Fitz & Simmons are his grandparents is hilarious.

The team goes in search of Gravitonium in order to save the world.

This week we learn that Freeland is basically what happens when the government doesn't get checked about the Tuskegee Experiments.  Jefferson and Gambi break up, Anissa trains and saves her father, and Jennifer's powers finally manifest in the lamest way imaginable.

Gambi tells a believable story, but we aren't sure if it is true or revisionist history.  Also, Latavius comes back and gives us the refresh to the series we needed with his conversations with LaWanda and the hilarious reactions of the people around him to those conversations.   We also discuss the DCEU's most recent announcement...although we don't hedge bets on how long that news will be accurate cause...well, it IS the DCEU (where are we with that Flash movie again?)

Kriss & Phenom review the movie adaptation of a video game, Tomb Raider. Before we get into the meat of the review of this movie, we discuss the current state of films based off video games and just how terrible they are. It's really really bad. Thankfully, Tomb Raider is a huge step in the right direction. Yes it's flawed and has issues. It takes way too long to get into actual Tomb Raider-type things but it's clearly an origin film that's trying to reintroduce the character of Lara Croft to the general audiences.

We also end with a discussion on why its important for film critics to take into account the audience of the film and why sometimes it's okay to not review a film. Also why discussions about films can give a better view of how good a film is versus just reading a quickly put together written review.

Two great episodes in a row for The Flash. It looks as if going into the final stretch, this show will be back on track. Before watching it, Run, Iris, Run, seemed like an episode that was going to be a step backwards and slow down the show. But instead, it was great all around. We get some much needed development of Iris’s character, we see why Ralph has regressed a bit and we even get some really great Harry & Cisco moments. This was a great episode that solidified Iris’s place on the team as not only team leader but as a support system for Barry.

Iris is given Barry's speed when the team fights a bus meta who has the ability to swap people's DNA.

Unfortunately Axl doesn’t survive showing that Legends of Tomorrow isn’t afraid to kill anyone…even a beloved pet rat we only recently found out about. But we at least got a makeshift rat funeral with a touching eulogy by Ray.

Oh and the Legends find out that Elvis is in possession of the Death totem and they have to stop him before he unwittingly turns Memphis into a ghost town.

This time on the Character Corner we’re finally talking about The Batman. We’ve talked around Batman for a while now. We covered him a bit in our Suicide Squad Character Corner, then the Rogue Wars episode on is villains. We’ve also covered one Robin and all of the Batgirls and even Batwoman. So it’s about time we finally dive into discussing the big guy himself.

We’ll be breaking this out into three parts. For this first part we cover the early years of Batman up to the introduction of Tim Drake as Robin. That’s about forty years of history from 1939 when he first appeared in Detective Comics #27 to the late 80’s and A Lonely Place of Dying. We also spend some time addressing the tragic story of Bill Finger who for the longest time was the uncredited creator of not just Batman but a lot of Batman’s villains as well as the classic conceptions we associate with the character. If you have Hulu, you should definitely check out Batman & Bill that goes into way more detail over how poorly DC treated Bill Finger and how everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves.

Issues:

  • Writer Bill Finger
    • Detective Comics #27 – The Case of the Chemical Syndicate – First Appearance
    • Detective Comics #29 – First Utility Belt
    • Detective Comics #31 – First batarang and first bat-themed vehicle
    • Detective Comics #33 – First telling of origin
    • Detective Comics #38 - First Appearance of Robin (Dick Grayson)
    • Batman #1 – First Appearance of The Joker & Catwoman
  • Superman #76 – First teamup with Superman
  • World’s Finest Comics
  • The Brave and the Bold #28 – Joins JLA
  • Tales of the Demon (1971-1980)
    • Detective Comics #411 – First appearance of Talia Al Ghul
    • Batman #232 – Daughter of the Demon (First appearance of Ra’s al Ghul)
    • Batamn #235
    • Batman #240
    • Batman #242
    • Batman #243
    • Batman #244 – The Demon Lives Again
    • DC Special Series #15
    • Detective Comics #489
    • Detective comics #490
  • Strange Apparitions
    • Detective Comics #469-479
  • Batman #357 – First appearance of Jason Todd (Pre-Crisis)
  • Batman #366 – First Appearance of pre-Crisis Jason Todd as Robin
  • Batman #408 – First Appearance of post-Crisis Jason Todd
  • Batman #410 – Post-Crisis Jason Todd as Robin
  • The Dark Knight Returns (Frank Miller)
  • The Killing Joke
  • Batman: Year One (Frank Miller)
  • Batman: Death in the Family
  • Batman #436 – First appearance of Tim Drake
  • A Lonely Place of Dying
    • Batman #440
    • New Titans #60
    • Batman #441
    • New Titans #61
    • Batman #442 First Appearance of Tim Drake as Robin

Short list of some of Bill Finger’s Batman Creations:

  • Batman
  • Joker
  • The Penguin
  • Scarecrow
  • Two-Face
  • The Riddler
  • The Calendar Man
  • Gotham City

Part 2 of this series we’ll take a break from the comics and go into some of the other media interpretations of Batman and then we’ll return for the rest of the comic history for Part 3.

It's here! The 100th episode of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. We thought they would go super big with this episode but instead, it's a more narrow focus but still packs a huge emotional punch. We find out the truth about Coulson and why he's dying. It brings us full circle with his death, his resurrection and what he's become since then. Mike Peterson/Deathlok also makes his long awaited return right as Coulson is faced with his greatest fear: That he doesn't improve the lives of those he meets but dooms them.

Oh and Fitz & Simmons get married and Deke is their grandson. Yeah. That's the "oh yeah that also happened" part of this episode so that should tell you how good it is.

Coulson finally reveals the mysterious deal he made with Ghost Rider, which will impact everyone on the team.

This week on Arrow, Thea Queen dons the hood (and sword) again as Speedy and instantly everything is right in the world again. Willa Holland's Thea Queen is one of my favorite characters in the Arrowverse. She's grown so much and this episode, plus the return of Colton Haynes as Roy Harper really set up for what feels like a good bye for both characters. If that's the route being taken, then we're happy to see Thea go out as Speedy one last time.

This week felt like a step up from a lot of stumbles and we only have a few nitpicks. First, how did the Swat Team know Team Arrow was trying to rescue Roy? Also, while having Black Siren pretend to be this Earth's Laurel Lance is a good twist, we really need the writers to stop being so heavy handed and obvious that we shouldn't trust her. We get it. We didn't need that last scene with the text message.

Overall, this was a good episode and next week Nyssa returns so the hits just keep coming.

Roy Harper returns to Star City and Oliver and Thea take action to save him when they discover the reason why he's come back.

WHAT WAS THIS?

The most interesting part of this show this was the side characters.  We are growing weary with the portrayal of the Pierce family, but appreciate the draw between Lady Eve and Tobias-who both lost out in the end.  Gambi gets his Zack Snyder Murderverse on, but it works this episode.  We are curious as to which person in the writing room thought it was a good idea to replace the n-word with the word ninjas and we provide a PSA for our White fans-never ever use that word in that context.  Ever.  We love you and want you to stay safe.   The show seems to be in a bit of a CW DC dive, and we hope it can pull out before the end of the season.

There it is. There’s The Flash episode we’ve been waiting for all season. Enter Flashtime is proof that this show can be great when it wants to. This bottle episode hit all the notes. While it doesn’t focus on Devoe, there are subtle hints that it could tie to him. It addresses the new power we saw Barry use in the courtroom with Iris before the break and even gets a good explanation as to why he can’t just do it all the time. We get character development for Jesse & Harry. We get mention of another female speedster at some point. Even Killer Frost and Caitlyn get a bit of development. This episode had it all. It makes us wonder why this show can’t be like this all the time.

Anyway, we’ll just enjoy this moment and hope that the rest of the season is more like this.

Barry, Jessie Quick and Jay Garrick slow down time when a nuclear bomb detonates in downtown Central City.

Legends of Tomorrow continues to be an awesome show. This show finds a way to balance being fun and silly and also giving us some serious, emotional moments. In this episode, we find out why the Legends have been having to go around fixing time and how it relates to Mallus. One simple explanation and now all the previous episodes that didn't seem to have a connection to the big bad, do now. It's been brilliant storytelling and just makes the show fun.

Other things of note:

  • Damien Darhk in a terrible wig that we can only assume is the show acknowledging Oliver's terrible flashback wigs
  • The Wally West we deserve
  • Addressing the tension between Damien and Nora since Damien served her up to be the host to a demon
  • What's going on with Ava? Is she a robot?

Focuses on time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter, who has to recruit a rag-tag team of heroes and villains to help prevent an apocalypse that could impact not only Earth, but all of time.

This show doesn't pull any punches and just because the Agents are back in the present doesn't make them safer. Ok seriously I'll stop with hand/arm puns now.

We finally get more on General Hill and it seems that she's putting together her own team. YoYo gets closer to her comic book counterpart and Coulson isn't going to make it out of this season alive. Oh and Deke's still alive and now in this time period too because...why not.

We have no idea what's going to happen next. Episode 100 is next and we know it's going to throw us for a loop. Also, time to pick up Secret Warriors again cause with YoYo's arms gone, Creel coming back and the way this whole thing is going, there might be some clues in that series.

Coulson and his team are out to rewrite the fate of humanity but they are unaware how the changes will affect one S.H.I.E.L.D. agent's life.

So this episode of Arrow (Collision Course) isn't the greatest but we'll continue to watch it over and over again just to what Rene get what he's had coming him. Look, the new team is stupid. Real stupid. We get that the writers are trying to show that this new team is going through the same learning process Oliver did but, they're so damn dumb. They keep trying to have a moral high ground but every reason they use is just wrong.

But hey, we got to see Oliver kick Rene into a tree and put him out of commission, so it's not all bad.

Oliver, Diggle and Felicity disagree with Dinah, Curtis and Rene on how to handle Black Siren. The two teams face off and a fight ensues.

We're one episode away from the 600th Insanity Check. But before that, Kriss is running a gauntlet of podcasting with 7 days straight of podcasting and what better way to bring that run to a close than with the person he talks to most with: Host of the Unanimous Decision Podcast, Dpalm

Look the world didn't end with Dpalm being a guest this week but you know we can never just do a regular show. So we threw out the show notes and we covered a bunch of random (but oddly related things) from the Oscars still having a problem with black movies to Michael Steele realizing his party is racist to the stupidity with the "gun debate".  We even throw in some comic book talk. Like I said, we were all over the place but it was a great show so make sure you subscribe and listen.

The last of our Oscar Awards shows before the actual Oscars. We’re discussing the top dog awards (Best Director and Best Picture). But before we get to all that, we have to discuss what we’ve been hinting at the last 2 shows and has become a reality: The Oscar Voters are full of shit.

We discuss the articles that have come out about anonymous voters admitting to things like not even watching Get Out and the bias that we’ve seen since before OscarsSoWhite. It also explains a lot of the strange nominations we’ve seen (Mary J Blige got nominated but Jason Mitchell didn’t? Why is Denzel nominated?).

So who do we think will take Best Director and Best Picture? We talk about who we are rooting for and why we know it just won’t happen. Maybe we’ll be surprised.

We’ll be back after the Oscars to discuss the winners and also the films that didn’t make the cut but we still want to discuss (And we’ll finally have that Three Billboards discussion as well).

Best Director
  • Christopher Nolan -Dunkirk
  • Get Out - Jordan Peele
  • Lady Bird - Greta Gerwig
  • Phantom Thread - Paul Thomas Anderson
  • The Shape of Water - Guillermo del Toro
Best Picture
  • Call Me By Your Name
  • Darkest Hour
  • Dunkirk
  • Get Out
  • Lady Bird
  • Phantom Thread
  • The Post
  • The Shape of Water
  • Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

We are back to discuss the weakest episode of the season.  It was a little message heavy, a little problematic, and not as well acted as it could have been. However, Gambi has a lot of explaining to do-first Tobias and now Lady E?  Hmmm.

In this episode Lynn and Jefferson discover Anissa has powers as she and Jefferson go toe to toe during a rescue mission, Jennifer is betrayed by Khalil, who has jumped on the villain agenda a little too smoothly, and Tobias is not impressed by people bleeding on his floor. Also, a showdown with Lady E has to be on the horizon.

The Flash is back from break and Kriss & Dpalm disagree on this episode, Subject 9. Both have valid points and it honestly comes down to how seriously the audience is taking The Flash right now. They just haven't lived up to their first two seasons and so if you adjust expectations then the show can still be fun.

The Good:

  • Thank you for addressing how ridiculous it is that the judge didn't question if that was really Devoe
  • While we know Ralph is the last Meta to help Devoe contain all these other powers, it's not like last season where we all knew pretty much how this ends
  • The tone and fun of the episode makes the show better than when its dark
  • Hey...we got The Fiddler on TV

The Bad

  • That southern accent was terrible
  • How did Barry not remember he had a conversation with himself from the future about the cerebral inhibitor?
  • This is a team of scientists, why is everyone so dumb?

What did you think about this episode? Did you like it or did you hate it? If you hated it, what do you think is wrong with the show and how can they fix it? Leave your answers in the comments.

Kriss & Dpalm are back to review this week's episode of Legends of Tomorrow. Legends of Tomorrow has been head and shoulders above Arrow and The Flash for a while but nothing makes that more obvious than Wally's appearance in The Curse of the Earth Totem. It felt natural, it was funny and it gave us a side of the character we've been missing ever since he was introduced on The Flash. At this point, CW is missing an opportunity if they don't give us short 5 minute web episodes of Wally & Rip doing funny things throughout history. I mean who didn't love Wally & Rip singing Careless Whisper in 1992 Tokyo?

And that's not even touching the rest of the episode that gives us a first date between Ava & Sara, the team "stealing" the timeship to go find the earth totem, Blackbeard being a coward, Damien Darkh continuing to be a better villain on this show than Arrow and Ray making a dumb decision that we all understand because they set up him wanting to save Norah episodes ago. This show is just good. Period. It's fun, its consistent and always keeps us guessing full of surprises.

While Sara takes some private time, the Legends follow a lead on the whereabouts of the Earth Totem and find themselves in 1717 on the hunt for Blackbeard's treasure.
