We're back to review episode 3 of season1  of Inhumans, Divide...and Conquer. So first things first, this episode is better than the pilot and proves that Inhumans had no business being released in IMAX in the theaters in the first place. That said, there's still a lot of problems, with the main issue being Black Bolt and Medusa being uninteresting. But that could change. Some flashbacks to younger Maximus and Black Bolt revealed some missing context to their relationship and upbringing that could have been useful in the pilot. Plus there's some interesting new characters (Dr Declan) that give a glimpse of a bigger and more interesting storyline.

The show also maintains interest with villains that viewers can't get behind. While we know Maximus is the bad guy because he's trying to have his family killed, he makes a compelling case. He comes off as the voice for the "everyday man" and wants to end the discriminatory caste system. On paper he's the revolutionary out fighting for the people. His story is clearly the most interesting and relatable of the Royal Family (Karnak being the second). With only 5 episodes left, will that be enough to save this first season of Inhumans?  We'll see.

And so it begins. We’re back with our Super Tuesday Recap reviews. First up, Kriss and Dpalm tackle Marvel’s Inhumans. There’s been a lot of talk about this show already and most of it is not good. So is it as bad as the early reviews say? No but…it’s complicated. Dpalm plays the “good cop” on this one while Kriss is “bad cop”. The short answer is, if you’re expecting something on par with other Marvel TV properties  like Agents of SHIELD or Agent Carter, you’re going to be disappointed. But there is potential (as proved by the previews for the rest of the season) and it could be that the pilot was just rushed and wasted too much money on the IMAX cameras.

So we will be sticking with the show (hey, there’s only 6 more episodes left). Listen to our review and check out what we thought worked and what didn’t and what we think needs to change for this series to turn around. And make sure you’re subscribe to the Super Tuesday Recap podcast on iTunes/Stitcher/Google music to stay up with all our future reviews (Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash, Star Trek Discovery and more).

It's hard to believe but it's that time again: The Return of the Fall Comic Book TV Shows. It's hard to imagine but 6 years ago all we had was Arrow. Now there's almost too many shows to count (or review).

But before we get into the preview of the fall season, we're going to give you a taste of our MailBag discussions that we will be having with the super Tuesday Recap. Today we're starting off with Dpalm gushing over the latest issue of Detective Comics, Kriss talks Marvel Legacy #1 and then a preview of our "Fixing the DCEU" series starting wtih why Matt Reeve's Batman film needs to have Robin.

Then we get into the shows:

  • The Flash
    • How does Season 4 rebound from a really terrible 3rd season?
    • Does this have the strongest new set of cast members out of all the CW shows?
    • Are we going to FINALLY get the Rogues done right?
  • Arrow
    • Is there any way for Season 6 to live up to what Season 5 accomplished?
    • Adding William can make this all go really bad, really fast
  • Legends of Tomorrow
    • Will this be the sleeper hit out of all the CW shows? Season 2 doesn't get enough credit for how consistent and good it was
    • Grodd is back and why is Darhk seemingly found a better place on Legends than on Arrow?
  • Inhumans
    • Is there anyway to save this show after the barrage of poor word of mouth and bad early critic reviews?
    • Is Kevin Feige just waiting for this to fail so he can give James Gunn a crack at the Inhumans in MCU Cosmic?
  • Agents of Shield
    • Is this the last season and are we all okay with that?

We're going to have a LOT of content coming out this fall so if you don't want to miss anything, make sure you subscribe to the Super Tuesday Recap feed in iTunes/Google/Stitcher. In addition to our regularly scheduled programming (The Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Inhumans and Agents of Shield), we'll also be adding Star Trek Discovery, Black Lightning, The Punisher and possibly The Gifted (might review it like Discovery, a few episodes at a time). Let's start with an apology up front: Kriss was definitely out of control this episode. But again, this is why we don't get the whole Super Tuesday crew together for reviews. Anyway, we wrap up our Defender review with episodes 7 & 8. We talk about where we see the characters going in their respective solo shows, who Maggie is at the end and sprinkled throughout are various words of wisdom like why you should always fight and old person. Yeah its that kind of show. And we end it all with a discussion on The Punisher and why it might not be the show everyone thinks they want.

Phenom and Kriss review Patti Cake$. Phenom had every intention of going into this film to roast it but he emerged surprised that it's actually a good film. It's funny, Danielle Macdonald is great as Patti and it's not the cultural appropriation vulture movie the trailers make it seem like.

PATTI CAKE$ is centered on aspiring rapper Patricia Dombrowski, a.k.a. Killa P, a.k.a. Patti Cake$, who is fighting an unlikely quest for glory in her downtrodden hometown in New Jersey.

We're back with a normal Super Tuesday Recap this week. We're reviewing the first three episodes of Marvel's The Defenders on Netflix. We're switching up our reviews for Netflix shows this time and we're breaking out our reviews of series into multiple episodes. This first review will cover the first three episodes (The H Word, Mean Right Hook & Worst Behavior).

Overall we enjoyed the first three episodes, particularly how they bring the heroes together and carry on from where each hero left off in their solo adventures. Charlie Cox and Krysten Ritter are clearly the heavy hitters here in terms of acting and carrying their scenes. But we do think that Fin Jones is much improved in this series and pairing him with Michael Colter's Cage is when both characters shine the most. We also talk about the messiness of the relationships on the show, a possible better order for the solo movies to fit into Defenders better and what feels off about Simone Missick's Misty Knight.

Detroit is a film that is well made, well acted but ultimately leaves you wondering who exactly this film was made for and why. We left the theater angry at what was shown in this film and while on the surface that might be viewed as the purpose of the film, that’s not good enough. The film is basically black torture porn where the villains (white cops) win in the end. There aren’t any moments where the past is tied to the present or a reflective call to arms for the audience. Instead it does what Kathryn Bigelow does best which is humanize white men who are terrible individuals while using black and brown people as punching bags. There are a lot of ways this film could have been made to address the tough subject matter without making it feel like an empty, deflating snuff film but that’s not what happened. The film makes a point to mention that there is debate over exactly what happened at the Algiers Motel that night yet it has no problem going into gory details drummed up from the filmmaker’s own mind.

Again, I have no problem with films that involve our (African Americans) history and the brutality that we’ve had to endure. I’m even one of the few who is on the fence about HBO’s Confederate (Granted, I have little faith in show runners who it took 5 seasons to finally figure out what rape is to do this right). But the problem with Detroit is that its really a film that treats black pain and death as a spectator sport with zero push back or fight. There's plenty of talk about the looters during the riot but none about WHY the people had been pushed over the edge. For 120 minutes we watch black people treated like animals. At one point early on in the film its implied that a little black girl is killed by the 50 caliber machine gun on the back of a tank rolling through the streets of Detroit. All of that is shown but when its time for the trials of the officers involved in the Algiers Motel murders, we get the abridged version in 10 minutes.

You can listen to our full review and why we can’t recommend this film. I honestly don’t know why anyone would want to see it.

Atomic Blonde is a film with great action and a great cast that will ultimately leave audiences feeling underwhelmed due to misleading promotion and a poor script. First off, the promotion of Atomic Blonde as the “First Female Bond” is not only misleading but doesn’t do the type of film Atomic Blonde is trying to be justice. Atomic Blonde is attempting to be a dark, gritty spy thriller set in the late 80’s with a more realistic feel to it. None of that describes any film starring James Bond. Trailers focused on the action in addition to David Leitch as director, may give audiences the impression that this is in the same vein as John Wick but that would also be a mistake. The John Wick movies are usually light on story and focused mostly on action. Atomic Blonde attempts to do more with its story, it just doesn’t do it well. And that’s a shame. With actors like Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, John Goodman, Toby Jones and others, the potential is there for an amazing story. Sadly, it’s just wasted potential. The acting is good, but that’s just because the raw talent in this film compensates for the script they were given.

Atomic Blonde isn’t a bad film. Anyone who wanted to see this film, definitely should. The action scenes are brutal and fantastic. Theron and McAvoy are great. But when the credits roll, there’s a good chance audiences might feel a little empty inside wishing there had been a more robust story.

What could be worse than yet another Final Destination movie? How about an even lazier Final Destination knockoff? Wish Upon is what happens when you want to make another Final Destination movie but get told “No” so you try to find a way to make it happen anyway.

Now to be fair, going in, you probably already knew this movie wasn’t going to be good. Trailers for this film looked like the boilerplate, half-thought out teen horror film that we’ve seen before. But it didn’t have to be. Wish Upon could have bucked the norms but instead it just doubles down on the problems teen horror films always seem to have. Characters that the audience has no connection to are killed but their deaths are supposed to have impact. The film breaks its own rules halfway through about who dies. But most egregious of all the problems, the lead character is not only stupid but completely unlikable. Joey King plays Clare Shannon who quickly goes from a character you have some sympathy for, to a character you absolutely despise for how selfish and stupid she is.

The plot goes like this, after her mother’s suicide (which comes back later in the most obvious “twist” ever put to film), Clare is raised by her father Jonathan (Ryan Phillippe). Her father gives her a “wish box” not knowing what it is. Clare’s first two wishes are accidents that she thinks are just coincidences along with the deaths of two “people” (people is in quotes for a reason) close her. But by the third wish, Clare knows the box is real. By the 4th or 5th wish, she learns what the price of a wish is (the death of someone close to her….kinda). But she keeps making wishes. Not only does she keep making wishes but…her wishes are stupid, even for a young teenage outcast girl. And that’s why this film is just so terrible. It uses stereotypical tropes about teens and how they interact with each other (as friends and in relationships) that is just eye rolling bad. At one point she wishes that her dad would be less embarrassing. Yes. That is the wish she makes that costs someone their life. To have a less embarrassing parent.

The film feels like it was written and directed by the same baby boomers who write articles about how millennials are destroying the very fabric of reality. You have to start wondering if they've ever spent any significant time with anyone under the age of 30.

We’ll be blunt: You’re not going to like A Ghost Story. Don’t waste your time or money for this film. It’s not made for you. David Lowery’s film falls into the same category as It Comes At Night. It’s not made for audiences to go and be entertained. Rather its made to give pretentious critics the opportunity to use a lot of words to heap praise and a ridiculous and boring movie.

A Ghost Story reminds me of those jokes about pretentious people in an art gallery looking at a stain on a wall and trying to one-up each other with what the “stain” really means. Then in walks a janitor with a rag and wipes away the stain saying “its not a piece of art, it was just throw up from a kid who walked by earlier”.

There’s nothing wrong with directors and cinematographers making movies that highlight certain artistic forms or allow them to “get weird” without feeling pressure to appeal to a broad base. But those experiments really don’t belong in the theater. Films like this are like tech demos video game studios make to show off cool new graphics. They have a specific technical purpose but everyone knows they lack the meat and potatoes to be actual games. That’s what A Ghost Story is. As a film, there can be some artistic quality to this that can spark conversations among film makers over techniques. But as a film for audience consumption, it’s insulting. Despite what some critics will have you think, there's nothing intriguing, thoughtful, intense about watching Rooney Mara eat an entire pie on the floor for 5 minutes while a man in a  sheet watches. It’s a child’s boogers smeared on the wall of an art gallery that people are trying to convince themselves is art.

The overall concept of this film is better suited for a short 10 minute film, not 92 minutes of mostly silence where you're stuck watching scenes where absolutely nothing happens. Yes, the film is about the enormity of time and how we conceptualize that. Yes, its an interesting concept to think about life/death/time from the perspective of a ghost/spirit and what that means. But execution matters here. Too many times film makers get caught up in their high level concepts or the technical accomplishments and forget about the simple purpose of: Will anyone want to actually watch this?

And for A Ghost Story? The answer is simple: No.

The third film in the Planet of the Apes rebooted series is by far the most emotional and best looking out of the bunch. War for the Planet Apes is so emotional and looks so good that at times you will forget that the main characters and actors are "apes". This series has slowly moved away from the humans and towards Caesar and the apes being the main characters with each progressing film. 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes introduced us to Caesar but still had James Franco carrying a heavy load. In 2014, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes put more responsibility on Andy Serkis and the actors playing the apes, but still had heavy human character influences. But War for the Planet of the Apes moves the humans to side characters. Almost every emotional scene in this film is carried by actors in motion capture portraying apes.

This film is truly a masterpiece. It will catch you off guard by how emotional it is and how much acting is done between the actors portraying apes. This film wraps serious discussions about revolution, slavery, war and racial dynamics into an entertaining film involving primates. One word of warning, the trailers were cut to purposely mislead and tell a completely different story than the one actually shown in film. And that's for the better.

Listen to Kriss & Tim break down this film (no spoilers). Stream or download from the audio player above.

Our review of Spider-Man Homecoming is finally here. We've been sitting on this review for over a week now and we can finally release it. Marvel has gotten Sony back in the win column with Spider-Man Homecoming. We don't look forward to the nostalgia debate by those still holding onto Spider-Man 2 but to us, Spider-Man Homecoming is the best live action Spider-Man film to date. Tom Holland captures the essence of teenage Peter Parker perfectly. Robert Downey Jr. isn't overused as Tony Stark in this film (no, its not even close to Iron Man 4). And Michael Keaton is the perfect villain in this film.

The rest of the supporting cast is just as good. And the best part, its diverse. I know there has been some talk about the diverse characters in this movie being only supporting characters but I think there's a lot of room for them being elevated to bigger roles.  Also keep an eye out of a lot of cameos by characters that are known in Spider-Man lore, particularly his early years (Listen to our Teenage Peter Parker Character Corner for a heads up).

Our spoiler review of this movie will go into more details and will hopefully be out next week.

Kriss, Phenom and Ashley review Despicable Me 3, the third (techncially 4th if you include the Minions movie) film in the Despicable Me series. Despicable Me is known for the way it balances appealing to not only kids but adults with certain references and the third film is no different. Steve Carell pulls double duty this film returning to not only voice Gru one more time but also Gru's long lost twin brother, Dru. He is joined by Kristen Wiig (Lucy) , Miranda Cosgrove (Margo), Dana Gaier (Edith) and Nev Scharrel (Agnes). Pierre Coffin is the voice of the mischievous (and lovable) Minions.

The standout in this film might be Trey Parker though who voices Balthazar Bratt, the villain in the film. Bratt is a former 80's child star turned villain who is upset that he was thrown to the side once he hit puberty. This leads to a plethora of 80's references and music throughout the film that should give adults plenty to laugh at alongside their kids. At one point Bratt conducts a heist while dancing and moonwalking to Michael Jackson's 'Bad'. It's fun for everyone.

In addition to reviewing the movie, Kriss & Phenom also have a discussion about this article from Wired that explains why Rotten Tomatoes (and Metacritic) are basically influencing what movies people see with fake information.

Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver is a fast past, fun heist movie that is both unique and fresh, while hitting the typical heist movie beats. You can always tell when a movie is a passion project of a great director because the level of detail and effort put in is hard to ignore. Baby Driver is Wright’s passion project come to life after 22 years as a concept in his head.

The most standout part of this film is the soundtrack and how it is integrated into this movie. Unlike most films where the music gets added in after the film is shot, because its importance, the music in Baby Driver was obtained first then had scenes shot around it. It makes for a thrilling film.

Our only real complaint about this film is that it seems like an odd time to release this film and that maybe later in the year would get it more attention. Listen to our full review to get all our thoughts on this film and leave us a comment to tell us what you thought.

Also the soundtrack was released last Friday and can be purchased on iTunes. Also released was the “Chase Me” music video by Danger Mouse featuring RTJ & Big Boi, so check that out as well.

In case you didn’t know, Tom King is currently writing the hell out of Batman over at DC. After turning in a stellar 12 issues on Vision of all characters over at Marvel, King got scooped up by DC to write Batman. He was taking over as writer for Scott Snyder who moved on to All-Star Batman. Snyder’s 52 issue run on Batman was an amazing run that set the bar high for King coming in (You can catch our Comic Book Book Clubs talking about Snyder’s run here, here, here and here). But King has knocked it out of the park.

Kriss and Dpalm discuss Tom King's run on Batman then talk about the crossover with The Flash, The Button and what it means for the future of DC in the Rebirth era.

Season 3 of SyFy's 12 Monkeys is a mixed bag. This season has had some really great acting performances of the cast. Emily Hampshire as Jennifer Goines continues to be a standout on the series. James Callis also adds in a great performance as Athan the last 3 episodes. But the show has struggled with consistency and breaking its own rules the entire season. The writing, which used to be the strong suit of this show, has become it's greatest weakness. The writers seem to change or ignore established mythos and rules when it fits their needs. Also the reveal of the "True Witness" just doesn't stick the landing due to inadequate build up throughout this season.

Listen to HiroJa and The Doctor wrap up their Season 3 review of 12 Monkeys with the final three episodes:

  • Episode 8 - Mask
  • Episode 9 - Thief
  • Episode 10 - Witness

It Comes At Night is a complicated film to review. The latest horror film produced by A24 is a technically sound film. Director Trey Edward Shults beautifully captures intense moments and suspense by using different lenses and playing with aspect ratios. Yet the actually story in the film leaves a lot to be desired.

It Comes At Night suffers from a few things. First, it is being marketed as a monster/horror film and it isn't. The title of the film suggests some creature or manifestation showing up. This type of false marketing is frustrating for audiences as they will spend most of the film with an expectation that is never fulfilled. But worse than false advertising, this film falls into the same problem that many "Art House" films do: It's completely unfulfilling as a form of entertainment.

Director Trey Shults admits to purposely leaving the audience without answers and while that can sometimes be acceptable for some films, it doesn't work here. The film drops us into a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by some mysterious illness. We aren't given many details in terms of time, place or even the specifics of the virus. All of that is fine for this film. But when it comes to the interactions of the two families in this film and the rules the film establishes up front, everything breaks down.

Joel Edgerton, Christopher Abbott and Kelvin Harrison Jr. all put in pretty solid performances. Harrison is particularly a standout as the 17 year old Travis, who seems to be the focus of much of this film. But their acting plus the suspense and tense brought on by the camera work and music, just aren't enough to overcome a pretty awful script. This leaves the film as being an enjoy film to admire for its technical aspects but pretty frustrating to watch as a form of entertainment.

Hiroja and the Doctor continue their review of Season 3 of 12 Monkeys with the next 6 episodes:

  • Episode 2 - Guardians
  • Episode 3 - Enemy
  • Episode 4 - Brothers
  • Episode 5 -  Causality
  • Episode 6 - Nature
  • Episode 7 -  Nurture

The Good

The heist portion of Nature was the highlight of these 6 episodes. Once again Jennifer Goines uplifts the show and the season in general. Causality with Christopher Lloyd is the creepiest episode due to a very Children of The Corn vibe throughout. Todd Stashwick (Deacon) is also a standout acting-wise. The acting in general has been very good this season with everyone bringing their A game to the show.

The Bad

The biggest problem with the show is the lazy writing and changing the rules as they go along. That becomes very apparent in this series of episodes. This shift in writing is dragging the entire season down and is losing all of the good will the show built up with the audience previously. We don't like that Cassie and Cole are keeping the secret of The Witness from the group since it causes more unnecessary problems.

Ramsey Death seems really convenient and the lack of effort on Cole's part to not try to save his " Brother " again speaks to the change in quality writing on the show.

Man of Steel split fans, Batman v Superman was universally panned and even Suicide Squad left a lot to desire. Beyond just getting the DCEU back on track, Wonder Woman also represents a 40 year wait to bring the most popular female superhero to live action. So does this film step up to the plate? Short answer: Absolutely.

Arrow's 5th season wraps with what is probably the best episode CW has ever done. Lian Yu is not just a great season finale but it ends a 10 year arc for Oliver Queen's story (5 years of flashbacks & 5 years of present day story telling).  We say goodbye to a great character that's been a staple on the show while welcoming back Deathstroke. Everything lands this episode and returns Arrow to the top to claim its place among CW's DC shows.  We can't speak highly enough about this episode. Listen to our review as we break down what makes this episode so great.

Oliver assembles a group of unlikely allies - Slade, Nyssa, Merlyn and Digger Harkness - to engage in an epic battle against Chase and his army.

What the hell was that? Kriss and Dpalm are back to review, discuss and rip apart the season 3 finale of The Flash. Seriously, we’re almost at a loss for words at what we watched. Sure, this season has had some rough moments, but we still expected this finale to rise above all of that and give us at least a solid footing to defend the season. But it doesn’t. From the cop out with the Iris/HR switch to Barry trying to play nice with Savitar, none of it is executed well. We go over all the plot holes and issues and hope that Season 4 the show brings back it’s ‘A’ game.

With nothing left to lose, Barry takes on Savitar in an epic conclusion.

Kriss is joined by Jax to review Baywatch starring Dwayne Johnson and Zach Efron. This definitely isn't a movie I would say a lot of people were looking out for. Obviously Baywatch was a popular TV show but I'm just not sure how that would translate to people being interested in a movie all these years later starring different people. Sure there are people that would go to see anything just because Johnson or Efron are in it. But dos that make it good? Well, in this case, the answer is yes. Baywatch doesn't take itself too seriously and takes the 21/22 Jump Street approach to bringing an old TV show to the big screen. And it's hilarious.

Devoted lifeguard Mitch Buchanan butts heads with a brash new recruit. Together, they uncover a local criminal plot that threatens the future of the Bay.

Kriss is joined by Jax to review 'Sleight'. This film originally debuted at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival before it was picked up by WWE Studios and Blumhouse for distribution. There was a small amount of hype coming out of Sundance about this film. It has a black director/writer in J.D. Dillard as well as a black male lead in Jacob Latimore and was presented as almost an urban superhero origin story. Does it live up to that hype? Listen to us discuss the film to see if it does.

A young street magician (Jacob Latimore) is left to care for his little sister after their parents passing, and turns to illegal activities to keep a roof over their heads. When he gets in too deep, his sister is kidnapped, and he is forced to use his magic and brilliant mind to save her.

The Agents of Shield review you've been waiting for! Kriss & Dpalm break down the season finale of Agents of Shield: "World's End". First of all, "World's End" is an action packed and emotional episode that sets up threads for next season. Credit should be given to Agents of Shield for being able  to do all of these things well in 42 minutes. And that doesn't even factor in bringing Ghostrider back. Robbie Reyes not only fit seamlessly into this episode but his inclusion also made sense.

And there's plenty more to love about this episode. The emotional moments with Mack, Hope & Yo-Yo. Also this episode ties the end of the season to the beginning with Daisy telling Fitz not to make the mistakes she did. Throw in a world seeded by LMDs now & somehow Coulson ending up in space and this was a monster of a finale.

Our latest review & discussion of The Flash is here. One more episode to go before the season finale of The Flash. While we've been critical of this season, Infantino Street, is a pretty good episode. Bringing back Wentworth Miller's Snart and pairing him up with Barry is always going to be a good for this show. Not only do Miller & Gustin have great chemistry together but their characters are perfect complements. Throw in King Shark and its a great time. Also, in a move that is sure to upset many, Iris's fate was always sealed. While it probably doesn't stick, we still have to give them credit for pulling this move. Dpalm gives a simple explanation as to how to undo this and defeat Savitar.

Also is the show is losing more casual fans because of some of the crazy concepts (i.e. all the time travel)?

Kriss and Phenom review 'Alien: Covenant', the Prometheus sequel from Ridley Scott. It's very very important to realize that this is a Prometheus sequel and NOT an Alien film. Also, it is very important that you watch the crew prologue trailer because these scenes introduce the characters and are NOT part of the actual movie. Overall, 'Alien: Covenant' shows the struggle between 20th Century Fox and Ridley Scott. Fox wants an Alien film to calm the cries from fans and Scott wants to go down a separate path with his Prometheus storyline. The end result is a rushed, mashed together mess. We've been singing the praises of this Season of Arrow for good reason, it's been really good. This episode, while good, does have some puzzling choices in it. Week after Week we sing the praises of Agents of SHIELD. There's really nothing left to say. They managed to bring Fitz back full circle with his feelings towards Ward from Season 1. They also manage to use a clever way of recapping the earlier storylines by having Coulson catch the real Agent May up on what she missed when she was replaced by a robot. We then got some great performances by Ian De Caestecker and Mallory Jansen this episode. We're not really sure of the mindset of Fitz until about halfway through the episode. And Jansen has done a great job all season as Aida and really shines playing a newly humanized Aida that is being flooded with new human emotions.

We finally know who Savitar is. Well, if you've been even halfway paying attention this season it's been fairly obvious for a while now. This season has been plagued with some ill-timed breaks and pacing issues and that leads to some valid questions about this season as a whole and this episode. But Kriss & Dpalm see the bright side and point out some good things that work in this particular episode as well as give hope for how this season can finish strong in the last 3 episode. Also, Killer Frost does a better Iceman than the X-Men movies ever have.

This episode of Arrow could have been called "Just listen to women". This episode has Lyla & Felicity each standing their ground against their respective loved one. And it works. There's been a lot of projecting and hypocrisy on the part of Diggle and Oliver and this episode addresses that. It also shows that Arrow has been better at handling romantic relationships in an adult way over The Flash and the rest of the DC TV shows. Doesn't mean its perfect, but its been treating them much better. There's also some really great small details that might be missed here and it serves as a great way to get Oliver back in the suit. What makes Agents of SHIELD so great is how it knows just went to reveal certain things or set up certain scenes. This whole episode is full of moments like that. There were some real emotional moments between characters this episode, some that tie all the way back to the first season. This episode also serves as a good sendoff for some characters if we never see them again. We talk about:

  • Really great to see Tripp back and getting a proper sendoff
  • Simmons confronting Fitz's dad
  • Fitz coming back to the real world and realizing the consequences of his actions in the Framework
  • Radcliffe's arc
  • Mack's decision to stay & more

Listen as we break down this episode.

Arrow has been the best of the CW show this season. The reveal of Adrian Chase as Prometheus took it to another level. The show has been so good that this first episode back from break doesn't even have Chase in it and instead focuses on Felicity's spiral into the dark with Helix and it still works. We're really happy with what they did with Felicity and Lyla this episode.

We also discuss what Nick Spencer is doing with Hydra Cap and why people need to stop complaining (particularly if they haven't done the basic reading).

We say it every week and this week is no exception: Best Comic Book Show on TV. With the reveal of what Project Looking Glass is, we learn that this is the natural progression of what was started in Season 2 of Agent Carter. It's been masterful storytelling. Agents of SHIELD manages to answer questions before we knew we were going to ask. Throw in Coulson becoming Defacto Director of SHIELD and giving a great motivational anti-Trump speech, we better get a 5th season.

Also, give the Writer's Guid whatever they want. Seriously. With all the work they put in on shows like Agents of SHIELD, it's a damn shame for Studios to be stiffing them.

The Flash is  back from break to enter into its final stretch of 4 remaining episodes. What works really well for us this episode is that we finally get that "beacon of light" Barry. With his future self so depressed over the loss of Iris, we get to see the current Barry step up and bring the future team back together and its much needed. Our biggest concern though is, with only 3 episodes left, it feels as if this show has painted themselves in a corner because of bad pacing and that it will be hard to pull off the finale. Also, stretching out the Savitar reveal has been  bad idea and there's really only one option of who it could be that would work.

And we end with a mega rant on WB's treatment of Wonder Woman. You've heard us talk about the lack of marketing (seems like everyone else is catching on too) but it's worse than that. Wait until Kriss & Dpalm break down the disparities in budgets. It's infuriating.

Tripp Back!

That's all we really need to say for this episode. What else is there?

We read a 5 Star Review that sends us on an X3/Superman Returns tangent (don't ask), then talk about this latest episode of Agents of SHIELD that brings back a fan favorite, introduces us to Fitz's dad and ends with Daisy giving us the "Hulk, smash" smile. Also, Marvel is going to make us watch ABC Family/Free Form with this Cloak and Dagger trailer

This review starts off hilariously with a debate over if the bar is lower for a film like this compared to say Justice League or BvS. How do they cram so much into a single episode and still maintain a good pace? This is why Agents of Shield is so good. Darth/Trump Fitz is the new best character this show has ever done. We also discuss the potential heartbreak and where it might come from (Plenty of #BlameDpalm or #BlameKriss this episode).

We end with talk about the Thor: Ragnarok teaser trailer. Listen to the full episode and let us know what you think.

We're back and this time we're here to discuss and review Marvel's Iron Fist. There's been a lot of news and talk about this series leading up to its release, most of it negative. And the reactions and early reviews weren't good. Were those reviews right or was this series doomed to get negative responses no matter what it did? Kriss & Dpalm have different views on this series and it leads to a pretty good discussion on what worked and didn't work for Danny Rand's live action debut. Give it a listen and let us know what you thought of the show.

The penultimate episode of Legends of Tomorrow is one of the best they've done. No Hawks and bringing some of the CW's best villains together did wonders for this show. And this episode doesn't go as one would expect and so it has us on our toes for the finale. On Arrow, this is also one of their best episodes. This season has really brought together the entire series and we get to see how they're shaping Oliver's future and realization of becoming someone better.

And finally we end with another talk about Marvel's sales being down on diverse comics and the stupid arguments people are trying to make that avoid the obvious.

With the musical episode out of the way, we're back to normal (what we can call normal) on The Flash. This was a pretty normal episode that didn't move the needle too far but did contain some setups. It was great to see Abra Kadabra on TV in live action and we got some long overdue Joe West "Black Fatherhood moments" with him cracking on how much know Iris's fate is bothering him. We are concerned with what they're doing with Caitlin as it seems to be forced in and not really set up well (why do her powers act this way) and we're hoping next season they get better at handling relationships (Damn it Cisco, do better).

We also throw in some talk about: the Spider-Man Homecoming trailer, if the Venom movie is happening, will Sony take Spider-Man out of the MCU, the rumored runtime for Justice League and more.

Legends of Tomorrow and Arrow are really bringing the goods this season. We really like how Legends is pulling the pieces together how it embraces the type of show it is. On Arrow, we're still getting Season 2 vibes from this show and how its forcing Oliver to come to terms with who he is.

And the new Justice League trailer comes out so you know we have some thoughts on this. Just remember, Kriss is the nice one when it comes to WB/DC.

Due to a mixup, we are bringing you two episodes in one this week.  In Star Crossed, Mon El's long standing non-secret, his royal heritage, is revealed by the arrival of his parents Lar Gand and Rhea (Kevin Sorbo, Hercules and Terri Hatcher, Desperate Housewives), who want him to return home and assume the throne.  Meanwhile, Winn learns that his girlfriend Lyra (Tamzin Merchant, Salem) has been playing a long con when she sets him up for an art museum theft.

In Distant Sun, the president (Lynda Carter, Wonder Woman), gives J'onn an unusual order to avoid future contact with Mon El's family on the ship orbiting earth while Kara deals with the intergalactic bounty that's been placed on her head by his parents.  Alex and Maggie hit another relationship hurdle when they run into Maggie's ex-girlfriend Emily (Hayley Sales, Cedar Cove) and Alex decides to prove how comfortable she is with Maggie's past, only to discover she doesn't know Maggie as well as she thought.

Legends of Tomorrow is so much better this season. Every time we have an issue with something, the next episode usually addresses that concern. This episode handles Rip trying to come to terms with Sarah being a better Captain than him extremely. We also get some really good moments with the odd pairing of Ray Palmer and Thawne. A really well done and fun episode.

As for Arrow, Adrian Chase is channeling Slade Wilson from Season 2 with his open taunting of Oliver and his team and we're loving it. Arrow has managed to get us to question how this season will end and still has plenty of mysteries up its sleeve (Who is Vigilante?).

We really enjoyed this episode. The speed-force calls out Barry for putting his burdens on everyone else and it's about time. Narratively this was needed but it makes you wonder if the 22 episodes this season have been just too weirdly paced to really land it.

Also Kriss rants about people not supporting the diverse representation they demanded in comics and Dpalm talks about news on the script for The Batman.

Get it together Flash. Overall this is a good episode but there are a few things that really stick out that make it hard to get into it. The first and biggest issue is Caitlin keeping a piece of the stone all of the sudden. It's a important plot point this episode and there was no set up for it. And there are a bunch of little things like that that add up. We know that The Flash is better than this and we want them to tighten up the writing because right now they're making unforced errors.

Oh and Dpalm has a rants about this push for R-rated comic book movies.

Kriss & Dpalm make the controversial statement that this season of Arrow has been better than both The Flash & Legends of Tomorrow and this episode adds more weight to that argument. Kriss & Dpalm have mixed feelings about this episode. Overall, its a pretty good episode with a lot of great moments (Harry hating HR, Harry trying to sabotage Jesse & Wally's relationship, Gipsy & Cisco, Barry considering that he might have to kill Grodd, etc). But it falls flat because the end is kind of anti-climatic. While we appreciate The Flash taking chances, it seems that we've approached the limits of what they can do on the CW.

We also talk about the new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 trailer, WB/DC still promoting everything but Wonder Woman, predictions on what Wonder Woman does financially and Dpalm responds to writer Tom King's ranked list of the best fighters in the Bat-Family (and in doing so, we commit to another Character Corner).

Oh and the Grodd issue that Kriss & Dpalm are talking about at the beginning is Flash Vol 2 #178

Shanna and The Doctor are joined by Dpalm to discuss Supergirl 2.14 Homecoming

Jeremiah Danvers (Dean Cain, The Adventures of Lois and Clark) is rescued in an operation that seems too good to be true. Only Mon El seems to be worried about his convenient return, driving a wedge into his new relationship with Kara and pitting family members at odds with each other.

Legends of Tomorrow is back this week with a fun episode that explains what happened to the JSA and why they disappeared after a mission. There's a lot to like in this episode but its marred by Ray being stupid. We're going to need to start seeing some maturing and growth of Ray (and Professor Stein).

On Arrow its very simple: Thea Queen is right. Kriss stans for Thea and isn't shy about it. The rest of the episode is also pretty solid as well. Oh and Dpalm has some thoughts about the news of a Nightwing live action film.

Phenom, Kriss & Petty review Jordan Peele's directorial debut, Get Out. This is a film we've been waiting to see since it was announced. Peele tackles the African-American experience by using the micro-aggressions,  stereotypes and the attack on our bodies that we suffer from "well-meaning" white people. Yes, it's that good.

Look, this is the best comic book show on TV and it's not even close. And it really shines when it's going into a break. Not too many shows pack as much into 42 minutes of television like Agents of Shield and this episode, Self Control, has so much.

Kriss & Dpalm discuss Jed Whedon's debut as a director and how some of the shots in this episode were perfectly picked, the shocking twists and turns and then we end with everyone's favorite: Our predictions on who isn't going to make it. We then take listener emails (of which we got a lot) and then talk briefly about some Marvel TV news (Inhumans, Namor?, X-Men).

Gorilla City. They not only did Gorilla City on TV but added in a gladiator style fight in an arena between Barry and Solovar. Sure, this episode has some issue but...Gorilla City. At the very least we have to be happy with that.

Kriss and Dpalm recap the episode and geek out about Gorilla City and we also talk about some of the problems and weaknesses of this episode, of which there are plenty.

Sometimes when interviewing an actual member of the sports media, it can feel like you've known them over 10 years. This time, it feels that way because it IS that way. My old Columbia classmate Lauren Brill is a sports reporter for WEWS (ABC) in Cleveland, Ohio, and took time out of her busy schedule to talk some sports. We cover what it's like to come to Cleveland in the craziest calendar sports year on record, the future of the Browns, and the joys of covering LeBron James. We also discuss her start in the industry, Chris Long skipping the White House, UConn's women breaking 100 straight wins, and Jim Dolan's flip flop on Oakley.

Arrow's latest episode, Spectre of the Gun, delves into the real world political arena by focusing on gun control...and it's one of Arrow's best episodes. This really felt like one of the Hard Traveling Heroes issues from Green Lantern/Green Arrow. This episode does a really good job of making Oliver Queen himself matter (and not the Green Arrow) as well as giving Wild Dog a backstory.

With no new episode of The Flash this week, Kriss and Dpalm decided to fill that time with a special episode talking about movie news. We start with good news, discussing Avengers Infinity War starting production, Black Panther/Thor Ragnorok concept art and Marvel Studio's well oiled machine. Then comes the bad stuff. It starts with a simple question: If we were given the opportunity to make a movie in which universe/studio, which would we pick: Fox or WB/DC?  From there we get into some larger rants:

  • Kriss finds out the Reavers are in Logan
  • Why Logan doesn't look exciting at all
  • 17 years of X-Men movies and Fox is still making the same ones
  • Who leaks more, Trump's White House or Warner Brothers?
  • WB/DC's shitty movie history and why they don't deserve any more chances
  • Rumors
    • Ben Affleck looking to leave the role of Batman
    • Mel Gibson being courted for Suicide Squad 2 because...fuck everything

Agents of SHIELD is so good. This latest episode, The Man Behind The Shield, does a great job of cramming so many things into one episode, yet not feeling bloated. We get a flashback to early Coulson & May when they were still early in SHIELD, Coulson channeling M Bison in his confrontation with Anton/The Superior and then a reveal with who is a LMD that is setting up for a horror show next episode. Lots to talk about.

Download/Stream the episode to hear Kriss & Dpalm discuss the whole thing.

Feels like a down week. We have some issues with this week's episodes of Legends of Tomorrow and Arrow. On Legends, this episode felt more like a season 1 episode and we blame it on Rip Hunter. On Arrow, it feels like the characters of Diggle and Felicity were taught lessons they already learned while sidelining Ragman before really developing him.

Listen to Kriss & Dpalm's full discussion about these two episodes (We're still waiting on our Producer checks).

Agents of SHIELD keeps a blistering pace and this episode, BOOM, is no different. There's a lot crammed into this hour. We keep saying that not treating your toaster like a toaster could be a problem, well, apparently Radcliffe doesn't see that. This episode we meet the the person that Radcliffe based Aida off of and sadly, so does Aida. This will end in tears. We also get an explanation as to why the serum that gives Mace his powers isn't widely used.

Wally learning how to phase through objects (even if they don't explode) is always going to get Kriss & Dpalm hype, so in that regard, this episode of The Flash accomplishes its purpose. But story-wise, we do wonder if there were some plot points that could have been introduced and handled better. Like how it would have been better to have HR tell Joe about the vision instead of having Iris do a sudden 180. Or that no remarked about how maybe Caitlin becomes Killer Frost in the future because she had to save Iris this episode.

Again, not a bad episode but just some things we thought could have been done better. Stream/Download the episode to get our full thoughts.

If we were unsure of the Legion of Doom being on Legends of Tomorrow, those concerns are gone. If anything, we are now unhappy at the thought that eventually we will have to go back to focusing on the Legends. On Arrow, we said if they were going to do a new Black Canary and bring on Talia Al Ghul, they better bring their 'A' game and...they did.
