This show. Makes us care about Talbot then turns him into Graviton. Between this and Infinity War, Marvel is clearly set on ripping our hearts out. We also see the fractures in the team start to happen but its because they're all happening at once. Also, they're all "betraying" each other but for the greater good of the team. Add in Fitz still hating Deke, the tone turning into a horror movie and Daisy digging up the grave of her dead mother...yeah, we're not read for the final three episodes.

Arrow is coming up on it's end and despite some small problems, it's coming in strong. The development of Oliver this season has been pretty good. Oliver going back to Anatoly kinda brings this show full circle and showed that Oliver does still have a plan. Even the Laurel and Quentin stuff was pretty good. The only real drag is the old team but that can be fixed as long as in the end, everyone but Oliver admits they were wrong.

Oliver turns to an old friend to help battle Diaz. Meanwhile, Rene is out of the hospital but has a hard time re-adjusting to life as Wild Dog. Also, Lance discovers something shocking about Black Siren.

Avengers Infinity War is in theaters now and is already crushing records (and souls). While you wait for Avengers 4 to come out, now is a perfect time to catch up on Thanos in the comics to see just how accurate the movie is. But before we can get into Thanos, we first have to give a brief overview of Marvel Cosmic. We've touched on Marvel Cosmic a bit with Inhumans and when we talked Alex Summers. But Thanos throws us right in the middle of it. Jim Starlin really helped solidify the cosmic side of Marvel and so we give a condensed rundown of the Celestials, Eternals, Adam Warlock and more. Trust us, we will revisit all of this more in later episodes in more details.

We then jump forward a bit to go through Jason Aaron's Thanos Rising which while it's more recent (2013), it gives a pretty great (and dark) view of Thanos' origins. Then its back to the early 90's and Thanos collecting the Infinity Stones (or rather, Soul gems as they were called) in Thanos Quest, the Infinity Gauntlet crossover and more.

We end with the recent Thanos solo book that if you're not reading it...you're missing out on greatness.

Reading List (As usually with Marvel, most of these are on Marvel Unlimited)

  • First Appearance
    • Iron Man #55
    • Captain Marvel #25 - 32
    • Avengers #125
    • Captain #33 - 34

We recorded the Mailbag a bit early this time so we didn't get to see the BEAUTIFUL artwork in The Flash #45 which after discussing how the art in the previous books was a turnoff, is a welcomed surprise.

Did we really need yet another Laurel Lance? Ugh. Anyway, Fury Rogue isn't a bad episode. Matter of fact, the emotional parts of this episode were pretty good. Earth-X Snart (Leo) has become a bit of a therapist on these shows. He did for Barry and the team what he did for the Legends: Helping them work through some of their emotional scars. It was also nice seeing Caitlyn dealing with losing Killer Frost and Barry breaking down do the feeling that Ralph's death was his fault (it was). The problem is: We just don't care what Devoe is up to anymore. Is he building a bomb? Who cares?

We also talk about the latest issue of The Flash (#45) and the beautiful artwork in it and how excited we are for Flash War. Oh and there's a trailer for Venom. Yeah...that happened.

When Barry needs help transporting a dangerous meta, he calls on an old friend for help - Leo Snart AKA Citizen Cold. Meanwhile, Cisco becomes suspicious of Harry.

Jefferson goes on a trip to the Ancestral Plane, LaLa goes boom, Proctor channels his inner Trump, Lynne packs heat, Jennifer lights everybody up, Tobias continues to provide bars, and Henderson...continues to be as mediocre as he is.  The Doctor is going on record as saying Pain Killer is the weakest villain alive, both in name and ability.  Proctor got all that hot lead from Gangsta Gambi and it was lovely in ways that cannot be explained here.  Anissa certainly approved of that message. It seems like the show did a tidy wrap up on the off chance that it didn't get a season 2.  They forgot that this was the year of Black Panther and Beychella.

This show.

Make us think Ruby is the Destroyer of Worlds only to kill her (graphically). Since the agents have made it back to their time they've been running from one crisis to another and it's keeping us off guard for what really brings about the end of the world.

There's a lot to like in this episode:

  • Two bad ass Asian women taking on the role using reserved for men
  • The men dealing wtih their emotions by talking while the women deal with it by beating up bad guys
  • Coulson & Mack setting Deke up (lemons)
  • Daisy trying to connect with Ruby; Yo-Yo having none of it
  • Damn it...they're really making us care about Talbot
  • Fitz & Simmons are the first to finally get it: in order to break the cycle they could have just died...

The team must find a way to stop Ruby before the prophesied chain reaction that can destroy the earth is put into motion.

This week's episode of Arrow isn't a bad episode but the problem is, because of the weird way this season has been laid out, we just don't care. Look, this episode digs into what motivates and drives Diaz and in that context is good. We see why he's a good villain to go up again Oliver. The problem is, the Cayden James distraction from earlier in the season really burned up good real estate and took away from time to really care about Diaz. However, outside of that, there are good things to like about this episode and we break those down.

Looking to expand his empire, Diaz meets with a group The Quadrant, a coalition of mafia families; after Oliver's recent decision, Felicity and Curtis double their efforts to build Helix Dynamics.

Mon El reveals that the third World Killer Pestilence evolves into Blight, who destroyed his future.

Papa J'onzz is still working to adapt to life on Earth while suffering from Martian Alzheimer's.

So here's the deal...the Toyman show was interesting...until it came out that the copycat was just the maintenance woman.  It would have been more interesting if it had been a lost family member like a daughter or a mistress.   I think this episode probably should have been moved elsewhere in the season-coming back off a near three month hiatus made this feel less lackluster for it's first run back.

This was a solid episode, but we are just worried that the CW chose this episode to come back off of hiatus for.  It is no fault of the show-they probably didn't realize when filming they needed to plan for a hiatus.  However, the network probably should have aired this one prior to the hiatus, and then brought us back with the World Killers episode we appear to be getting next week.

We finish up the Dark Knight himself with what might be the greatest and longest streak of great stories for a solo character. From the time Grant Morrison takes over Batman to today’s Tom King Run, we have what is arguably the best storytelling at DC. It gets weird, it gets crazy and it brings in things all the way from the 50’s & 60’s. If you want to truly understand Bruce Wayne and Batman, pick up the Grant Morrison Batman omnibus and strap in, you’re going to be in for a ride.

Fine, we can be convinced that Ralph & Barry, two cops, were under the influence of bad luck powers and so they didn't know how the meta-cuffs worked. Fine. But what we can't accept is having most of the episode with Barry telling Ralph "killing is wrong" with no sense of self reflection when the last 3 seasons the solution has been to kill the villain. Ralph will take a lot of blame for this episode and where this season went wrong but it's not his fault.

  • They shouldn't have put the character in this position by giving Wally's arc to him. People liked Wally and Wally deserved better. To bring in another character and give them the story Wally should have had makes it hard to like Ralph
  • Even more important, Ralph wasn't wrong this episode. Barry & Iris keep coming up with the same plan and that plan has led to 7 (actually 8) Metas dying. If Ralph had killed Devoe, this would have been over and the show offers no real counterpoint.

We wish this show was written smarter. We wish Barry got back to being smart and a detective and figuring things out. This show still has some great moments, we wish it was just more consistent and felt like the show we loved in Season 1.

Barry and the team find a way into the Thinker's lair; Ralph considers crossing a dangerous line to defeat him; Joe is concerned by Harry's recent behavior.

Gotta love this show. They handle their ensemble cast better than anyone else. This season makes it even better by doing really good callbacks to previous seasons. There's a lot to cover this episode:

  • Fitz & Simmons growth as characters
  • May confronting Coulson and telling him she loves him
  • They made us care about Talbot only to use that to hurt us more
  • Daisy vs Ruby Round 1
  • Ruby confronting Hale and Hale realizing too late she's made a mistake
  • Coulson's reckless behavior
  • and more

While this show could end this season just fine, we're really hoping it gets a season 6 because its just so damn good.

When an agents life hangs in the balance, Fitz, Simmons and Yo-Yo attempt to neutralise a weapon that could play a role in Earth's destruction.

Put Star City in rice folks. The entire city is corrupt. So much so we don't know if there are any solutions for Oliver in how he can fix this. I mean the entire police department (minus like 5 people), the DA and now even the City Council are all in Diaz's pocket. Maybe it's time for a Malcolm Merlyn style "undertaking" to just wipe out the entire city and start again.

This episode was pretty good. Ignoring the issue that both Arrow and The Flash have with season structure, this episode was able to have Oliver confront his choices and failings without having it feel like he's regressing. And even then, it showed that not all of the things that have happened have been his fault (Laurel & Renee ain't on Oliver). It still remains to be seen if they can stick the landing for the season.

In his darkest place yet, Oliver wonders if he has failed at everything; Oliver lashes out at Felicity and William; a surprising visit from an old friend has Oliver questioning his next move.

Rampage is exactly what the trailers looked like. There are no surprises here. Is it a good movie? Of course not. Will there be an audience who is satisfied watching it? Yes. You already know if you want to spend money on this or not. Even those who go see it and enjoy it will forget it after a week. It'll blend into the Dwayne Johnson's catalog of bland, easily forgettable and similarly looking films.

We spend a lot of this review talking about the problem with Dwayne Johnson's solo movies and why certain movies of his just aren't good. We also talk about film criticism in general and why film critics need to evolve to also take into account the audiences a film is made for. There's the technical side of film making but there's also the side where a film should be made with the audience in mind. Films should be able to do both but for films like Rampage, there are some that can get away with it (for a weekend at least).

Its found a way to perfectly balance serious concepts and themes but also doesn't forget to have fun. This episode also brings back a lot of elements from earlier in the season, completes Damien Darhk's arc with him finally doing something selfless (ala Malcolm Merlyn) and ends with a giant Beebo fighting a giant demon.

This show is awesome.

The Flash returns from break with an episode that probably didn't please a lot of fans. Ralph's jokes, even with the explanation at the end, probably just didn't land for a lot of people. After discussing it, we think the problem comes from two places:

  • A weird order for some of the character growth moments throughout this season. When you think about it, the two episodes before barely showed us Ralph and so to come back to Ralph cracking jokes and being out in the field felt really weird
  • The breaks are killing this show. The show isn't written with the breaks in mind and so the momentum from previous episodes gets abruptly halted and it's jarring.

When you focus on just this episode on its own, this episode isn't that bad. Devoe finally becomes truly scary with the repeated drugging of Marlize and erasing her memory. The stuff with Breacher was just one hour long erectile dysfunction joke. And even the Ralph stuff has an explanation. It's the breaks though. The breaks are killing the flow of this show. Listen to get our full discussion.

Barry and Ralph try to find the remaining bus metas before DeVoe gets them. However, Ralph's attitude frustrates Barry and they clash over what it means to be a hero. Meanwhile, Breacher returns to ask Cisco for a favor.

*I read the wrong episode number/title/synopsis at the beginning of this episode. I read the one for 15 not 16*

Here's the scary thing about Agents of SHIELD right now: Since the team has come back into the present, despite everything that's happened, the end of the world is still on track here. Jemma and Elena might think they're invincible but the truth is, no one on the team has ever really sat down and talked about everything they know about the future. To be fair, there's been a lot going on and they've been going from one fire to another. But at some point, they need to brain dump everything they know. Because right now this rogue team, plus Daisy bringing Robin into the fold, is just keeping the clock ticking down for the end of the world.

Also, poor young Strucker is thinking with the wrong body part when it comes to Ruby, who seems to be a little too enthusiastic about being the "Destroyer of Worlds".

Coulson is forced to team up with unlikely allies to save the world, while his team try to track him down and rescue him.

Let's get this out of the way: This episode was bullshit because the logic behind Diggle being mad at Oliver is bullshit. But it was entertaining watching Diggle dig himself into a hole and then watch Oliver smack him into it (along with his dead brother). While we get what the show is trying to do, it hasn't set it up very well because...well...Oliver's right. And not only is he right but the new Oliver has been doing the right thing for 2 years now while Diggle, Felicity and everyone else messes up. And so what should be an emotionally powerful moment comes off as Diggle whining like a 2 year old.

Oh and Kriss apologizes for ever backing Dinah. She's the worst.

Oliver and Diggle face their biggest challenge yet; Curtis is disappointed to find out his new boyfriend has a firm anti-vigilante stance.

The trailer for Blockers doesn’t do the film justice. While the promos for this film make it seem like Leslie Mann, John Cena and Ike Barinholtz are the focus and stars of the film, it’s really the young actresses (Kathyrn Newton, Gerladine Vsiwanathan and Gideon Adlon)who play their daughters who are the standouts. This film proves you can make a raunchy, edgy coming-of-age comedy without being super problematic or focused on dudebros. If Blockers was made 10 years ago, it would have been super white, super male and aged incredibly poorly like most comedies of this time. Instead, Kay Cannon’s film is pretty diverse, inclusive and turns most of the dudebro comedy tropes we’ve seen before on their head.

Think about it. We’ve seen plenty of films where young male high school students decided that “this is the night” they lose their virginity. But we’ve never seen it from a teen girl perspective. At least not done this well. In this film, the girls are all the aggressive ones with their dates for prom going along with their plan. While yes, the parents are frantically (and hilariously) trying to stop their daughters from going along with this pact, the focus is really about young girls exploring their own sexuality and forming their own decisions about what they want to do with their bodies. Gerladine Vsiwanathan is the standout star here. She's the "Tomboy" of the trio and makes most of the crass jokes but they're hilarious, well timed and she plays off of John Cena extremely well in their scenes together.

Even the parents buck some trends we normally see. Leslie Mann plays the overprotective single mom whose real issue is, she doesn’t want to let go of her daughter. This is typically the father role in most films. John Cena is the straight-laced sports dad, but he’s also a pushover and a stay-at-home dad whose wife is the breadwinner. Barinholtz is the “problematic” dad but even his character has a few progressive traits, like the fact that he’s figured out that his daughter is gay and just wants her to feel free enough live her truth.

Like I said, this is a film that from the trailers a lot of people might avoid but that would be a mistake. This is a smart, funny, progressive film that honestly probably makes a great case for why feminism and allowing women the ability to be free and open about their sexuality is good for everyone.

Three parents try to stop their daughters from having sex on Prom night.

A Quiet Place is what It Comes At Night wanted to be. John Krasinski directed a horror film that is so good you’ll be surprised it’s PG-13. The intensity and fear generated by moments in this are damn near unmatched by any other horror film in recent memory. From the opening of the film, the tone is set. The film doesn’t spend time trying to explain where these creatures came from or giving much explanation. It focuses on this family trying to survive the best they can, as silently as they can.

Because of the nature of the story, there’s very little spoken dialogue in this film. For most of the movie, communication with other characters is done through sign language. Despite the lack of spoken dialogue, there is solid character development as well as great acting between characters.

This is a film that deserves all the praise it’s getting and you should definitely check it out. Listen to our full, spoiler-free review to find out why we loved it so much. We also talk about the lack of condom use in apocalyptic movies. Seems like it would be the time you’d be most concerned about not bringing a child into the world.

A family is forced to live in silence while hiding from creatures that hunt by sound.

Damien Darhk was right. Not even trying to be all "villain agenda" here but he probably ended up saving the lives of the Legends by betraying them. They were going to lose spectacularly. Neal McDonough has always been great as Darhk but he's been really great this season. The mini-speech he gives Sara about the darkness inside of both of them and love was great. Everyone knew that Darhk was going to betray the team but even the reason why he does it this time shows growth for the character.

This was another excellent episode. We start off with Grodd going after a young Barry Obama then the focus shifts to Amaya trying to save her village (and breaking time, thus freeing Mallus). And then there's the whole meta John Noble playing John Noble being asked to read a script to sound like a character...voiced by John Noble. Legends of Tomorrow is great.

The Legends must fix two anachronisms at the same time to keep Mallus at bay and form an uneasy alliance with one of their enemies.

We’re back with Part 2 of our Batman Character Corner. Part 1 focused mostly on the early comics up through the introduction of Tim Drake in Batman #440. For this episode, before diving back into the comics, we wanted to cover the other media that Batman has been prevalent in. Considering that TV has had a big impact on Batman in the comics, we felt throwing this episode in between the two comic focused episodes was best. Both the 66 TV show and the early 90’s Animated Series have led to some characters making their way from the TV screen to the comic book pages. Also Batman’s presence on TV and in film have had an huge impact on his popularity and for many, was their first introduction to not just Batman but comic book characters.

So sit back and listen as we dive into the world of Batman from TV to Film to even Video Games.

Hail...excuse me...Hale...Hydra

How do you follow up an incredible Fitz episode which reveals the dark side of Fitz? With Hydra Hogwarts of course. We get the backstory on General Hale and it ties everything together. We find out how Hydra trained young kids to grow up to infiltrate not only SHIELD but all other parts of government. We find out the terrible choice Hale was given (I mean its still Hydra) and why she wants Coulson to help her join Hydra and SHIELD. We even get to find out what happened to Talbot (damn it, they made me start to care about him).

And this is all before we get Daisy confronting Fitz and Fitz not apologizing for a damn thing (and dropping his own heat). THIS SHOW IS SO DAMN GOOD!

Coulson uncovers General Hale's real agenda and it could be the end of the world if S.H.I.E.L.D. can't stop her.

On it's own, this episode is a great send off for Willa Holland's Thea Queen. We get Roy & Thea suiting up (the former wearing a baseball cap that sets Dpalm off) and the return of Katrina Law's Nyssa al Ghul. This completes Thea's arc and also sets us up for a return in later seasons (along with maybe a return of one Malcolm Merlyn). But there were some small annoyances with other aspects of the episode:

  • Roy's hat (it's small but a hilarious thing)
  • Dragging out Diggle & Oliver talking about Oliver being back in the hood (ITS CAUSE YOU'RE NOT GOOD ENOUGH DIGGLE!)
  • The whole "is the Captain dirty or is she not?" thing. We already knew she was, stop treating the viewers like we're kids

Overall though, we enjoyed the episode for what it was: A goodbye to a character with a great arc.

Nyssa al Ghul returns to Star City to let Thea know that a group of renegade League of Assassins members are planning to attack her.
