Kriss, Ro, Brandon and Joi get together to discuss the film Destroyer starring Nicole Kidman. This film...is a film.

No but seriously, we have some serious issues with this film. There seems to be some really bad choices from top to bottom: From the script to who was cast and for which roles. Director Karyn Kusama did make some good choices when shooting this film to really drive home the noir feel but overall the we couldn't help but want to see more of what the film could have been (from the flashbacks) versus what we got.

This is a spoiler review, so if you want to hear us our in-depth analysis and discussion about this film, listen below!

Kriss, Brandon and Ro review On the Basis of Sex, the film starring Felicity Jones as Ruth Bader Ginsburg and is supposed to show her struggle for equal rights on her way to becoming a Supreme Court Justice. Instead we get a shell of a film that doesn't leave up to the legacy of Justice Ginsburg. This film feels like it was made by someone who didn't watch RBG (The documentary on Ginburg) and then didn't bother to watch any TV shows or movies that dealt with court cases. Legally Blonde does a better job with its climax court case than On the Basis of Sex does. This film is a let down on so many levels and is easily forgettable.

Kriss, Brandon, Ro and Joi review Vice and talk about why they actually loved this film when so many seem to hate it. Christian Bale does a terrifyingly great job of becoming Dick Cheney. And this film takes the seriousness of what Cheney and Republicans set in motion decades ago, and puts a tongue-in-cheek spin on it to make sure everyone looks horrible. This is a film where the villain wins. We know this because Dick Cheney is still out and about in the world today. But it's important to remember that there's a straight line to Trump from when Dick Cheney decided he was going to become a republican. This film will having you laughing one minute only to suddenly sober up when you realize that what you're laughing at, actually happened. Some will say we didn't need this film. But we think it's important to remember that republicans like Dick Cheney are loyal to only one thing: Power.

Even if you're not a fan of period pieces, The Favourite should still be entertaining enough to be one of your favorite watches this year. The three main actresses Olivia Coleman (Queen Ann), Rachel Weiz (Lady Sarah) and Emma Stone (Abigail) are absolutely fantastic in this film. They're perfectly cast for the roles they play and we can't see how anyone else would fit. If you're still feeling a bit burned by Emma Stone & La La Land (we go on a bit of a tangent about that film), rest assured she's back to the Emma we love. This film also has a Nicholas Hoult sighting and he's also as good as always.

Listen as Kriss, Brandon, Ro and Joi talk about what they loved about this film. You're definitely going to want to check it out.

We took a little bit longer of a break than intended but we're back to discuss the last two episodes of The Gifted Season 2 going into the mid-season break. As always, we love this show. It does a fantastic job of not only accurately depicting the themes of the X-Men but also tying in relevance to the world today.

We have fun reviewing these two episodes. Here are some of the things we discussed:

  • Noah and Andy learn that puberty sucks and your dick is not your friend
  • Was Rebecca always crazy or was she made crazy because of the betrayal of her parents and being locked up?
  • Turning perfectly made pancakes inside out to eat them (with no syrup) is the sure sign of a terrorist
  • The Mutant Underground is falling apart
  • Shanna's Mutant-ships are falling apart as well
  • and plenty more!

Listen to this review and let us know what you think of The Gifted Season 2 so far!

The last Character Corner of 2018! Kriss & Dpalm finish out 2018 with Part 2 of Aquaman and lets just say, shit gets a bit crazy from here. For the first time ever, we have to start the episode out by recapping Part 1 just so you get a sense for how off the rails Aquaman gets from here on out. A lot of writers, some of our favorites included, owe Peter David an apology for dropping the ball and wiping out the meticulous and detailed history of Atlantis and Aquaman that he laid out in his run. Just a sample of the crazy shit that happens:

  • Atlantis gets sent back 3000 years and Arthur gets changed into a water wraith
  • Arthur meets the Lady of the Lake (yup, that Lady of the Lake) and gets his harpoon hand replaced with a magical water hand
  • Arthur Joseph Curry (don't make us do this)
  • Has his silver age origin suddenly wipe out all of what Peter David did
  • On and off again weakness of being out of the water too long
  • San Diego is sunk and the inhabitants can breathe underwater and so they changed the name to Sub Diego and Aquaman becomes their protector

And there's more. We told you this shit gets weird. Things finally start to get normal again when Geoff Johns writes the first three volumes of New 52 Aquaman. Dan Abnett's Rebirth Run as well as Scott Snyder's Drowned Earth Justice League crossover are also pretty good.

Give the episode a listen and let us know what you think. We'll be back in 2019 with the following line up to start the year:

  • The History of the Golden/Silver/Bronze/Modern Eras of Comic Books - January
  • Captain Marvel (all of them) - February
  • Shazam - March
  • Iron Man - April

Steve Carell has been acting his ass off this year. Welcome to Marwen could have been the film that got him an Academy Award nomination this year but the choices made in the script really hold him back. Much like Beautiful Boy and Boy Erased, there's a much more interesting and nuanced story to tell in this movie but instead of that, the film focuses on the fictional world of "Marwen" that Mark Hogancamp creates. This is based off a true story and what happened to Hogancamp is truly horrific but the film barely scratches the surface and leaves the audience without a full picture of why things are happening the way they are.

Here's what you have to ask yourself with Bumblebee: Do you believe you deserve better Transformers FILMS or do you just want to see better looking transformers in a film? That's the real question. Because if you're only going into Bumblebee to see G1 accurate looking Transformers and to get the typical 15-20 minutes total of Autobots vs Decepticons action, then you'll be satisfied. But if you want to see a complete Transformers films that focused on Autobots and Decepticons...then this is just more of the same. The first 15 minutes of this film is awesome and what every Transformers fan was waiting for. Then it turns into ET and Bumblebee gets turned into a dumb pet and we're left wondering why are we sitting through this film. Just send us a supercut of all the Cybertron scenes and all the Bumblebee vs Dropkick & Shatter scenes and call it a day.  This movie has a lot of the same story beats from the first Michael Bay film. But I guess we're not supposed to mention that cause we saw Cybertron for a few minutes and got some better character designs.

There really isn't a greater sin when it comes to comic book films than having an actor play a character but their portrayal is nothing like any iteration of the character that has ever been written.Jason Momoa isn't Aquaman, he's just Aquabro. And that comes with all the problematic hyper masculinity "Look Arthur Curry isn't a punk. He's a man's man" bs that comes with it. And that's just the first problem that Aquaman has. The score and soundtrack is bad. The dialogue is bad. The story tries to cram the Throne of Atlantis storyline, which could be a full trilogy, into one movie that's all over the place. Yes, the fight scenes are enjoyable and there are some standouts (Yahya Abdul-Mateen's Black Manta is criminally underused). But at this point, why are we still making excuses for DC & WB when it comes to their execution of these films?

We've made it to "The Book of Rebellion" and Khalil and Jennifer are on the run from Tobias and Jen's parents, respectively. At first, Jefferson and Lynn assume Khalil has kidnapped Jennifer until Anissa lets them know that Khalil and Jen have been texting since episode one this season.

Khalil and Jennifer think they are truly Romeo & Juliet so despite the fact that their road trip starts with a shoot-out and continues with being chased by an assassin, Jennifer runs from Black Lightning and Thunder every time they show up to help.

Lynn is at home spiraling. She's gone off the Henny and between her daughter running away and having killed 14 teens, she is not in a good place. She rallies briefly and talks to Gambi (AKA the Other Woman) so she can track down Khalil's dad just to learn that he had an apartment. This leads exactly nowhere.

While his assassin Cutter (Kearran Giovanni) is tracking the teens, Tobias is making new moves and enlists the genius of Todd Green (RJ Cyler, Sierra Burgess is a Loser). Green is a boy genius who is missing out on grant opportunities because of racism and classism and Tobias is using that to win him to his side. Also in the final moments we're introduced to a new unnamed meta played by The Chi's Tosin Morohunfola. Tobias is also putting two and obvious together, and wondering why Black Lightning always seems invested when the Pierce girls are involved.

These two episodes give us a lot of good character development for Jennifer who is also learning to control her powers and she proves herself to be incredibly resourceful. That being said, Black Lightning still struggles this season. It's good tv but not great tv. Especially compared to it's CW peers. We'll see you in the new year and hopefully Black Lightning will bring it's A game when we return.

Time to end 2018 with the final Character Corner subject of 2018: Aquaman. The King of the Seven Seas is getting his first solo film this month and so we're taking a look at the history behind Arthur Curry aka Aquaman. Aquaman is another DC character that has been around since the Golden Age and has seen a lot of drastic changes not only to his origin but his supporting cast as well. He's a character that's struggle to get respect, with many people thinking his only powers are talking to fish and that he's pretty useless outside of water. DC didn't do the character any favors by giving the character the weakness of needing to be in water at least once every hour. All that changed in 1990 when Peter David took over writing Aquaman. First he started by building a foundation for not only Arthur's lineage but also telling the story of how Atlantis became an advanced civilization under the sea. He then takes Arthur on a journey of not only understanding who he is but what it means to be a leader & king. Also, this is where we get the iconic 90's look of Aquaman: Harpoon Handed Aquaman.

Listen as we break down the early history of Aquaman, a quick run through of the different eras of comic books and then talk about how Peter David brought some respect to Aquaman's name.

Issues:

  • More Fun Comics #73 - First Appearance of Golden Age Aquaman
  • Adventure Comics #229 - First Appearance of Topo
  • Adventure Comics #260 - First Appearance of Silver Age Aquaman
  • Adventure Comics #269 - First Appearance of Garth/Aqualad
  • Brave & the Bold #28 - Founding member of the Justice League
  • Aquaman #11 - First appearance of Mera
  • Aquaman #18 - Becomes King of Atlantis; Marries Mera
  • Aquaman #23 - Arthur Jr (AquaBaby)
  • Aquaman #29 - First Appearance of Orm/Oceanmaster
  • Aquaman #35 - First Appearance of Black Manta
  • Adventure Comics #452 - Black Manta kills Aquababy
  • Legend of Aquaman Special (Aquaman Special #1) - Rewrote Aquaman's origin post crisis
  • Peter David's Run

So...Mortal Engines happened. It continues the trend of studios attaching a big name as a producer (Peter Jackson), handing the directing off to someone with little experience, shoveling boat loads of money into it, only for it to abandon the source material and turn into a steaming pile of garbage. So who is to blame? And why do studios do this? Mortal Engines will get terrible reviews and flop this weekend. The cliff hanger ending in the movie will never be followed up on. What's it going to take for these genre films based off of young adult novels to be treated with some respect? Ro, Brandon and Kriss discuss.

You already know what it is. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is not only the best comic book films of the year, but it's one of the best films of this year. There is an amazingly talented voice cast for this movie and the script nails what it means to be Spider-Man. Make no mistake, this is Mile Morales' movie but you'll love all the other characters too and want to see more of them. Stan Lee's cameo is probably his best and most relevant cameo. Run do not walk, to see this film this weekend.

Do you all really expect us to review this episode or do you just want us to laugh at how ridiculously awesome it was? Custodians of Chronology, Sirens of Space Time and Puppets of Tomorrow. I mean seriously, what are we supposed to do with this? No other show leans into the ridiculousness as much as Legends of Tomorrow does and by being so self aware, it's truly become on of the best shows on TV. Our only complaint? We have to wait until April for more episodes.

Here is its. The review we hinted at in our If Beale Street Could Talk and Three Identical Strangers reviews, the problematic review itself: Mary Poppins Returns.  Kriss, Ro and Brandon break down why this new Mary Poppins film is the perfect continuous from the original. Emily Blunt IS Mary Poppins and dominates the screen. But everyone else is pulling their weight as well. Lin-Manual Miranda really takes to his role as Jack and the film does a great job of blending an all new story and songs with the feeling of the original.

So why is this review problematic? Let's just say Kriss tries to kill off Angela Lansbury, Brandon comes up with a Murder She Wrote update and Ro...well we're not sure what Ro did but we're pretty sure it was something. These negroes should never be allowed to review movies together.

Barry Jenkins does it again. This time with his adaptation of James Baldwin's If Beale Street Could Talk. This film will hit you right in the feels (as expected). Just like with Moonlight, the way black people are filmed in this movie just makes us look magical. And the story is one that is both relevant to the time and doesn't have your typical "happy ending". We discuss how that might be a problem for some white critics that don't understand the significance of how this story ends. We also talk about how Jenkins manages to balance telling the delicate story of a rape victim and the family that believes the accused is innocent and how it shows both being victims of a system of oppression. We have a lot of thoughts on this film so give it a listen.

Excluding the Arrow portion of the Elsewords crossover, Unmasked is the midseason break episode of Arrow and they threw in two big reveals:

  • Emiko Queen is the new Green Arrow that's been going around saving people. Ollie's got another sister
  • Diaz is still alive

Add Oliver finally putting the costume back on (minus the mask) and we're cooking on all cylinders. We have no idea where the story is going but we love everything so far. Oliver has to deal with the changes to Felicity that are really his fault. Also how long will he be able to operate as the Green Arrow out in the open, working for the Star City police department? And what scared Diggle and Lyla so much that they would go to Diaz for help? Also...who trained Emiko? We have so many questions and we'll have to wait until January to get the answers.

The Flash perfectly nails its 100th episode by going back to some of Barry's roughest moments over the years. Not only that but of course it's revealed that Thawne is the one behind Nora going back to see her father. Tom Cavanagh directed one hell of an episode and it's only fitting that his most devious character is revealed to be up to no good. We have a lot of thoughts and theories on what happens in this episode. What is Thawne up to? Did he have Nora plant a time hack for himself? Will we ever see the original timeline (the one Thawne is from)? Is Sherloque really Sherloque or Thawne in disguise? We have so many questions and things running through our minds.

Also...how about that Captain Marvel trailer?

It wouldn't be a Legends of Tomorrow season if the Legends didn't break time. We just weren't prepared for it to be this episode. We also weren't prepared for them to drop that Neron is the demon that's tormenting Constantine. This episode is another example of Legends balancing weird and ridiculous with very serious moments. We learn that Constantine bound the soul of his lover Desmond to Neron in order to banish Neron to Hell. At the same time we're getting the legends hunting down a demon possessed doll (that eventually possesses the Professor Stein puppet from last season) and Mona is trying to bone a Hawaiian werewolf. Oh and then Charlie & Constantine break time and turn Zari into a cat.

This show is weird and we fucking love it.

We are joined this week by special guests Rod and Karen from The Black Guy Who Tips Podcast Network to discuss the most recent episode of Supergirl!

Nia reveals she's from a planet called Naltor to Kara, and that once in a generation women in the family get the genetic ability to dream the future.  Unfortunately, it isn't an ability she has a great deal of control over.  Brainy reveals Nia is important to the future, but can't reveal why.  Manchester continues on his John Wick run, confronting Ben and his wife at their home.  J'onn doesn't seem to be able to mind his own business, and Kara is betrayed by a 53% woman in Ben Lockwood's wife, who she saves, only to be thrown under the bus by her.

The season continues to discuss contemporary issues effortlessly.  Discussing the Alt-right in the Supergirl universe, the concept of passing, and the devastation that victimization can do to a person's psyche sounds like a documentary or a heavy drama, but Supergirl pulls it off with flare and style.

So the podcast episodes are getting shorter-and there is a reason for that.  People need to be watching this show!  To that end, we are giving our impressions and broad takes on episodes 6-8: Demons of the Punjab, Kerblam!, and Witchfinders.  For those who were concerned about needing to watch past seasons of Doctor Who to follow along and worried about the overwhelming task that might be-fret not.  Chibnall this season has given us a Doctor and a T.A.R.D.I.S. team that is the perfect starting point for any new Whovian.  There are easter eggs in every episode that long time watchers will appreciate, but it doesn't keep a new watcher from being able to enjoy the show.  We also appreciate the decision this season not to have one threaded threat that was present in previous contemporary Who episodes-these all stand alone and work well as such, showing that Doctor Who continues to be a show that can do both serialized elements and bottle episodes successfully.

This week we reach the end of the Book of Blood as the fight between the Perdi and the Sange comes to a head. In many ways, this episode is a satisfying conclusion to the arc while at the same time dropping many important threads or glossing over issues that were presented for our characters.

Lynn is suddenly pulled out of her depression over the Greenlight babies in order to help Anissa with Anaya and the Sange babies. This is mainly so Anissa can give a lot of platitudes about mother/daughter relationships right before Anaya finds out her own mother is dead.

Jefferson and Gambi reunite and it's a beautiful moment but given that this "book" started with Gambi's attempted murder, it would have been nice to see more of his investigation and also WHY WEREN'T JEFFERSON AND ANISSA LOOKING FOR HIM INSTEAD OF RUNNING AROUND SOUTH FREELAND?

Finally, Jefferson and Lynn remember that they have another daughter just in time for her to have already run away. Once Khalil realizes that he ain't bout that life and he won't be killing the reverend, he has to get out of dodge and Jenn is primed to go with him after being on house arrest the past few weeks. Jenn also reveals her powers to Khalil in a Romeo and Juliet-esque moment so basically we've got two teen runaways with powers who are in love. Go ahead and make your CW jokes. I ship it.

We discuss all of this and more (warning: we totally go on a tangent about everything from Aquaman to Marvel Netflix) on the podcast. Join us in two weeks when we return to discuss The Book of Rebellion.

Stop me when you've heard it before: a team I love has made it to a large stage, taken a substantial lead and metaphorically plunged a blade into my throat because hope is a lie. Yes the mighty UGA Bulldogs have once again lead me down a path of disappointment, but I don't let my trauma derail our discussion of what the UFC is doing, the fact that Ohio State lost to Purdue by 4 touchdowns, or why the NFL is addicted to making the wrong decision. Oh yeah, Kriss is here too.

The Flash has really learned from the mistakes of previous seasons and is making adjustments to previous things they've tried. Last season, Devoe wasn't necessarily a bad villain. His backstory and episodes were actually pretty compelling. But at times it felt so disjointed from the rest of the story being told. This season, Cicada/Orlin has been integrated into the story from the start. As Cicada he's been shown as a terrifying villain that can nullify the powers of Metas. And now this episode shows what motivates Orlin and it's really compelling. It ties into the entire shows theme this season of family, particularly fathers and daughters. Also, it was good seeing Barry and Nora get to the bottom of what's really bothering Nora: Barry's willingness to sacrifice himself.

Seriously, what do you want from us every week when it comes to reviewing Legends of Tomorrow? What more can we say about how good this show is? This episode can literally be described as: Biff Tannen teams up with Ernest Hemmingway to hunt a Minotaur in the catacombs of 1920's Paris. It's so ridiculous yet so good. Throw in Ava & Nora bonding over a bottle of wine and cake after Mona looks them all in a cell and well....it's all ridiculous and awesome.

Hank Heywood confronts Ava about the spending habits of the Legends; Mona tries to make a good impression with Ava, but her eagerness gets her and Ava stuck in a cell together.

Arrow really used the time with Oliver out of the suit and in prison wisely. The Slabside Redemption marks the end of Oliver's time in prison (and maybe of Diaz) but he leaves a completely changed man and probably closer to the Green Arrow/Oliver Queen from the comics. As Ben Turner says in this episode: Before you saw the world in black & white. Now you understand there is some gray. When Oliver does finally pick up the mantle of Green Arrow again, he's gonna have a far better motivation than he did when he started.

Also give it to this show: Watching Oliver & Turner beat a bunch of people up was great. Michael Jai White might be the most disrespectful fighter of all time when it comes to the way his character always beats people up. We really loved this episode and it made the payoff of Oliver being in jail worth it.

Oliver makes a choice that will affect his entire life, as well as the lives of everyone he cares about.

This week gave us an episode heavy on character development, as Lena struggles with the better angels of her nature, and Manchester embraces the power of the dark side.  Jimmy (he will be Jimmy til he gets his act together) continues on his Van Jones heel turn tour, J'onn is devastated that he misjudged Manchester, and Supergirl is stuck as a pawn being used by many.

While it is not as fast paced or action packed as this season started off, this episode provides us with a deeper look into Lena's motives, as well a heartbreaking look at what grief can do to a man who feels he has nothing left to lose.

We're back! After a brief unintended break thanks to Verizon, The Doctor, Shanna, Parrish and D are back to discuss the first two chapters of "The Book of Blood", Requiem and Perdi.

Black Lightning is determined to break these books into story arcs and because of that the pacing of each individual episode has been off. Before we were rudely disconnected, we talk about the show's struggle to round out the story in each episode so that the momentum doesn't fall flat. That aside, "The Book of Blood" sets up an interesting story for all of our main characters. It opens with Gambi being run down by two hitmen in his van that has his name printed on the side, you know, just like all tailors who are secretly Nick Fury.

While Jefferson struggles to deal with Gambi's "death", Anissa is on the case of an interracial couple, Deacon and Anaya, who come into the free clinic. The boyfriend, who acts cagey and scared, later turns up dead and when Anissa shows up in South Freeland to investigate, she finds a segregated town where the white residents, the Sangee, have superhuman strength and speed granted by a metahuman who may have gotten her powers from the same vaccine that Jefferson was given. The Black residents, The Perdi, live in fear and don't mix with the Sangee. When Anaya gives birth to twins, one Perdi and one Sangee, the babies are in danger from this metahuman known as The Looker (Sofia Vassilieva)

Lynn is also trying to save the Greenlight babies but her calculations tell her that at best she can save half or lose them all. Since Lynn wants to stall until she can save them all, Dr. Jace dupes her into believing they can save everyone and Lynn is now responsible for the death of 14 of the twenty-eight pod kids. Lynn is going to have to push through her guilt, if she wants to stay in charge of this operation.  And Jennifer gives her some real talk about taking responsibility.

Meanwhile, Jenn and Khalil are getting closer as Jennifer feels more isolated and Khalil faces the brunt of Tobias's abuse. It's sad but Khalil is finally realizing that Tobias is behind the shooting that paralyzed him and with the crimes he's committed, Khalil has limited options. Hopefully, it doesn't take him (or Henderson) another six episodes to realize that Khalil is the witness they need to put Tobias away. If they don't get it together soon, Tobias is going to keep raining down insults and punches on this poor child.

We discuss all of this and more in this week's review.

Kriss and Dpalm review the latest episode of Arrow Season 7: Due Process. Felicity keeps going done a dark path, Diaz has some words with Anatoly and look at Earth 2 Laurel trying to be a hero (and a DA). We also are intrigued by the glimpses of the future and what it means for the end game of Arrow. We're also planting our stake in Roy being the man under the hood in the present day.

Oh and we told you not to trust Stanley.

Slabside becomes even more dangerous after a guard is murdered and everyone is a suspect. Felicity enlists help from a surprising source in her pursuit of Diaz, and Laurel flexes her muscles as the District Attorney.

Kriss and Brandon review Alfonso Cuarón's latest work, Roma. A couple things to know about Roma before watching:

  • It's in black & white
  • It's in Spanish and is subtitled

Now most people will not sit through Roma but it's definitely at the top of the list of films to beat for Best Picture this year. The film is beautifully shot, emotional and is a great snapshot of what this family went through, particularly their housekeeper Cleo.

A story that chronicles a year in the life of a middle-class family in Mexico City in the early 1970s.

Kriss, Brandon and Ro discuss Green Book and the controversy surrounding it. Is it a white savior film? Does it water down racism? We think Green Book is definitely a film audiences should check out. It's not a perfect film and probably would be better (or at least delve more into Dr. Don Shirley's personal life) if it had a black director. But it's definitely not a comedy and it doesn't make the racism of the 60's easier to swallow.

A working-class Italian-American bouncer becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South.

It's unfair how good Legends of Tomorrow is. Who would have thought that a show with a pretty rocky and formulaic start would turn into the smartest, best written and most progressive of all the Arrowverse shows? Legends has reached Agents of Shield territory with how they're able to balance weird and fantastical plot points with serious topics with real world implications. We never would have thought an episode with a giant squid monster in Japan would tackle the very real trauma of Japanese citizens in the wake of Hiroshima. But that's exactly what this episode did. And it worked.

Not many shows can have a scene where Ishiro describes walking in the ashes of his neighbors then end with a fight between a giant squid monster and a three-breasted warrior princess. Yet here we are. The only thing that needs to be asked right now is: Are you watching this show? And if not, why not?

Dpalm has gone full Villain Agenda (Isn't that Kriss' role?) and puts the idea of an Uncanny X-Men movie directed by Zack Snyder into the world. On The Flash side, The Flash is fun again and we're loving it. We really enjoy seeing the various breakouts of the team and we're even starting to like this Wells. Cecile is adorable and Danielle Nicolet is doing a great job filling in the role Jessse L Martin used to fill.

The show is doing a great job this season of letting the team work as a team. Everyone is competent and therefore is trusted to go off and investigate their own piece without being handheld. And even with that, we still got a bit more back story on Cicada/Orlin. So far so good with this season. Let's hope they can keep it up.

Professor Lockwood continues to use his historical logic to justify his bigotry, and it is FRIGHTENING how convincing it can be.  James does the worst undercover job on the planet, and Manchester Black gets his Punisher on.  Also...shout out to April Parker Jones for making sure these writers know that Black folks do Sweet Potato Pies at Thanksgiving (fight me, @ me if you want to), and for reigning in Alex and Kara's "we answer to no one" tendencies.  Lena continues to investigate the harenel properties, which apparently makes individuals or entities invincible, giving her the worst idea on the planet-create supers.  Did she not watch The Incredibles? Finally-COME THROUGH GREAT VALUE DROGON!!!!

Supegirl is the best superhero show on right now-we said it, we mean it, and we can meet on these streets if you want to counter us on it.  While other shows are using throwaway lines to tackle current events, Supergirl is hitting it head on through the storyline.

We're back! This time instead of diving into your favorite, well-known characters, we're tackling a group that's a little less known: The Doom Patrol. This episode is bit different from other Character Corners we've done since there's not a whole lot of material to pull from for the Doom Patrol. This is a group that ended their first run in the late 70's with the entire team being killed off. We start off our discussion by talking about the comic landscape in the 60's and the claim from one of the Doom Patrol creators (Arnold Drake) that Stan Lee stole the idea of the X-Men from Doom Patrol. While we don't think Stan Lee stole the concept, it does lead to an interesting question: Why did creations like the X-Men & Fantastic Four take off while Doom Patrol failed to really connect? After the Doom Patrol was killed off in the 70's, other creators tried to resurrect them and get them to catch on but not with a lot of success. A lot of writers that have tried to tackle the Doom Patrol even fully admit that at the time, they weren't doing the team justice because they weren't nailing what made these characters so unique and special over at DC. And then Grant Morrison took over.

Grant Morrison's run on Doom Patrol can be best described as a Clusterfuck of Weirdness and while that might seem like we're speaking negatively about it, it's just the opposite. Morrison's run is probably the definitive run one what the Doom Patrol is and what makes them so unique. Morrison leaned into his own unique viewpoint of the world and created a run that was full of unique and strange villains (Red Jack, The Brotherhood of Dada, the Scissor Men, the Men from N.O.W.H.E.R.E.) and parodies like his Punisher parody, The Beard Hunter. Honestly, if you understand Morrison's Doom Patrol run on your first reading, you should get yourself checked out. That said, it's compelling, interesting and is the most significant when it comes to the Doom Patrol.

We have a full show this episode as Kriss, Brandon, Ro and Shanna get together to review Steven Caple Jr's Creed II, starring Michael B Jordan, Tessa Thompson, Sylvester Stallone, Florian Munteanu and the return of Dolph Lundgren as Ivan Drago. This is a great film that feels more like part 2 of Ryan Coogler's Creed and not just a sequel. Caple manages to keep the same realness of the first film while also exploring the characters even more. This film does a better job of fleshing out Ivan Drago (and his son) more than Rocky IV did.

We also discuss why this film has a lower critic score than the first film. To put it bluntly, we don't think white critics are fully processing what this film is showing and that the also missed the point of the first film. You're not going to want to miss this discussion and review. Listen and let us know what you think int the comments.

Kriss and Dpalm are back to review episode 5 of season 7 of Arrow, The Demon. We never knew how much we wanted to see Oliver choke the shit out of not-Dr. Hugo Strange until he did it. It was great watching Oliver remind all the guards that every day he's peacefully in prison not whooping their asses is a gift from him. And of course The Demon is an Al Ghul (Talia to be exact).

  • Felicity and Laurel becoming best friends
  • Curtis getting handled in a better way and showing where he's useful outside of being a Felicity clone
  • We love how this show is tying back to previous seasons

We're back to discuss episodes 4 - 7 of Season 2 of The Gifted. This show continues to be the best live action adaptation of the X-Men. They've found a way to make all of their villains sympathetic in some way. We know they're wrong, but we also understand what motivates them. We cover a lot in this discussion:

  • Poetic Justice Reeva: We get to see pre-Inner Circle Reeva and why she is the way she is today
  • Keeping track of our villain agendas: Reeva & Jace...who is more sympathetic?
  • Purifier Jace Turner: He's Jeff Flake
  • Sometimes the crazy mutant is locked up because...they're crazy
  • Esme is definitely going to break away from her sisters
  • Dear Andy...your dick is not your friend
  • What is the Mutant Underground really doing? What is their plan?
  • What is Reeva's plan? Is she trying to create a mutant nation?
  • Are the Morlocks working with the Inner Circle?

If you're not caught up on The Gifted, you need to be. This show is great. Listen to our discussion and let us know what you thought of these episodes!

The great Stan Lee passed on Monday (November 12th) at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy and characters that will forever be remembered and timeless. Kriss and Dpalm talk about what impact Stan Lee and his creations had on them and why he matters so much to the world of comic books. Beyond the huge list of iconic characters he created/co-created, what stuck out so much about Stan Lee is how much he championed for diversity and inclusion in the medium. From creating the first black superhero and black supporting characters like Robbie Robertson to being vocal in the fight against bigotry. Stan Lee revolutionized Marvel with the idea that while super heroes are extraordinary individuals, they still navigate life with the same problems that everyone else has. Not only that, but Stan also championed the idea that there's strength in all of us and anyone could be a hero. Lee really nailed the idea that the Marvel universe represents the world outside of your window. He will be missed but never forgotten

“Let's lay it right on the line. Bigotry and racism are among the deadliest social ills plaguing the world today. But, unlike a team of costumed super-villains, they can’t be halted with a punch in the snoot, or a zap from a ray gun. The only way to destroy them is to expose them — to reveal them for the insidious evils they really are. The bigot is an unreasoning hater — one who hates blindly, fanatically, indiscriminately. If his hang-up is black men, he hates ALL black men. If a redhead once offended him, he hates ALL redheads. If some foreigner beat him to a job, he’s down on ALL foreigners. He hates people he’s never seen — people he’s never known — with equal intensity — with equal venom.

Now, we’re not trying to say it’s unreasonable for one human being to bug another. But, although anyone has the right to dislike another individual, it’s totally irrational, patently insane to condemn an entire race — to despise an entire nation — to vilify an entire religion. Sooner or later, we must learn to judge each other on our own merits. Sooner or later, if man is ever to be worthy of his destiny, we must fill out hearts with tolerance. For then, and only then, will we be truly worthy of the concept that man was created in the image of God – a God who calls us ALL — His children." - Stan Lee

It's another big 4 WWE pay per view, and we're joined by another fan of the full contact soap opera to preview the weekend. But, when you get Taz on the line, you don't just talk about one thing! We talk about the future of Auburn football, we predict War Games and Survivor Series, but most importantly, we sing the praises of The Man Becky Lynch.

The Flash continues to be fun and enjoyable again. The show is correcting a lot of the mistakes from the previous seasons as well as making sure to not stretch out character development. We're really impressed and happy with them not stretching out the issues with Nora & Iris. The episode before this we found out why Nora was so standoffish with Iris and in this episode we get a resolution (at least for now) of those issues. Not only that but it tied back to Iris' issues with her own mother. On the "B-Team" side, we see Cisco putting himself into pain just to help his friend. Oh and Rag Doll was creepy as fuck.

  • They couldn't do comic Rag Doll for the same reason The Boys has to be toned down or we're all going to jail
  • Mama Cecile is the perfect replacement for Papa Joe while Jesse L Martin is on break
  • The friendship of Cisco & Caitlyn
  • The Ralph/Wells Buddy Detective team up
  • Nora learning how awesome her mom is
  • Iris jumped off a building head first to save Barry. They in love love.

I mean...what more do we have to say about Legends of Tomorrow? This show is filling the void of Agents of Shield for us being the show that's fantastical and over the top but still has some real serious moments. Wet Hot American Bummer really nails what kind of ridiculous and over-the-top show Legends is while also giving us moments like Constantine giving up his own life force to save a child and Charlie/Amaya having a heart-to-heart with Rory. It's why we love the show.

  • Ava reminding us she never had a childhood
  • Charlie & Mick bonding over their previous incarcerations
  • Whoever the young girl who plays young Sara reacting the exact way adult Sara would react
  • What kind of camp counselor was Dpalm?
  • John pretends he's hard and uncaring but he's carrying so much guilt for the souls he hasn't been able to save
  • Nora and Iris should never bring something to the company potluck

Still rocking at a great pace, we bring you two back to back episodes this week.  In Ahmisa, we learn that Fiona was not dead (yet) but instead was being used for her telepathic abilities to control aliens and wreak havoc on National City.  This episode also introduces us to her fine ass fiance Manchester Black (David Ajala, Black Mirror), who comes to town looking for his girlfriend and stumbles onto the Graves' conspiracy.  Kara continues to act out, failing to see the bigger picture, and Alex, who enables this behavior, ends up with a new supervisor in the form of Colonel Haley (April Parker Jones, The Fosters.  James refuses to listen to Nia's voice of reason and becomes the poster boy for xenophobia.  And oh yeah...the Graves get killed, so there is an upside to this episode.

In Parasite Lost, Jensen goes on a spree, sucking powers from aliens and wreaking havoc.  Alex and Colonel Haley find a working rhythm that appears to be producing positive results, James deals with the fallout of his intervention in the Graves' incident, and Kara works with J'onn to investigate an attack on an alien healer.  While this episode was also well done, we still struggle with them placing people of color as the voice of xenophobia.  It is almost as though they want to avoid pointing out the way white people perpetuate bigotry and supremacy, while laying equal blame at the feet of people of color (news flash-there is no equivalent/both sides argument to this).  Of all the episodes, 5 was probably the most disappointing for this reason, but still well done.

We’re finally back with another Character Corner. Sorry for the delays, been having a lot going on outside of the network and so it’s taken us a while to get back to where we need to be. We’ll definitely be back to a more normal schedule in 2019. We do have a schedule for the rest of 2018 and it’s as follows:
  • Ultimate Spider-Man Part 2 (Hi)
  • The Legacy of Stan Lee
  • Doom Patrol
  • Aquaman Part 1 & 2
Now let’s get into the conclusion of Ultimate Spider-Man...

It can’t be understated just how much tragedy Peter Parker suffers and that it's important that it's Peter that suffers it and not just Spider-Man. Because Peter matters in these stories, his sense of responsibility is not only real but backs up the motto "With Great Power There Must Also Come Great Responsibility". Peter doesn’t get the luxury that other heroes have, particularly as a teenager. In the back half of Ultimate Spider-Man, we watch as Peter struggles to keep his identity secret (and doing a poor job) and be a high schooler. One thing that's incredible about the life of Ultimate Universe Peter Parker is that from the moment he's bit to his death, it's really only about 2 years in story. In that context. The back half of ultimate spider-man can be viewed as peter trying to juggle his life as everything falls apart around him

For this episode we're breaking this out volume by volume (Volume 11 - 22 of Ulimate Spider-Man) and point to some of the important pieces in each volumes. Then we’ll treat the final issues after Ultimatum (becomes Ultimate Comics Spider-Man) as one big block leading up to, spoiler alert, the death of Peter Parker.

Since this episode turned out to be pretty long (just under 2 hours) we decided to keep our Stan Lee discussion separate and it will be released on the Character Corner feed later this week. Make sure you subscribe!

Arrow has been taking some chances and risks with the storytelling and for us, it's really paying off. Stephen Amell still hasn't suited up as the Green Arrow this season and in this episode, we take a trip back to the day Robert Queen died. It really raises questions about parents who leave their children carrying their sins & legacy instead of forging their own.

Outside of prison, they're really starting to make us like Rene. I mean...yeah he's still a snitch (we're reminded this episode he's snitched TWICE) but he's really trying hard to redeem himself. Meanwhile, Felicity is really approaching a line and getting to villain levels while Laurel surprisingly is the one to pull her back from the abyss. And then there are the flash forwards which are really making us think about the timelines and who this new Green Arrow could be. Oh and...All Hail Beebo!

We have so many questions and theories. Listen to this review and let you know what you think!

Doctor Who is back and fun again!

We discuss episodes 2-5, the fun and strong pacing of the series, the diversity in the writer's room and director's chair, and the penchant for individuals expecting historical accuracy from a science fiction property  draining the fun from the enjoyment of the series (Two words: Take Naps).  The dynamic between the companions and The Doctor is lovely, and we appreciate the time Chibnall is taking to flush them out as fully realized individuals and not just exposition receptacles for the Doctor to alien-splain to.

Kriss & Phenom are joined by new MTR Network member Ro to discuss Steve McQueen's highly talked about and anticipated film, Widows.  This film is a lot and we mean that in a good way. Widows doesn't hold the audience's hand and expects them to pick up on certain things throughout and the result is a masterfully put together film. McQueen does a great job of setting scenes and framing shots in order to bring the audience right into the film There's an entire political subplot that happens in this film that while it is connected to the main story, has it's own direction and twists and turns. This film should produce several Best Supporting nods come award season with Elizabeth Debicki and Daniel Kaluuya being standouts. Kaluuya is such a great villain. And we love Cynthia Erivo.

Seriously go check out this film. You won't be disappointed. Listen to our review and let us know what you think in the comments.

On this episode of Movie Trailer Reviews, we welcome Ro to the MTR Network family as she joins Kriss & Brandon to review Boy Erased. This film is based off the memoirs of Garrard Conley and tells his struggles growing up as a gay child in a Christian fundamentalist household after he's outted to his parents. While the film is good, what keeps it from being great are underdeveloped supporting characters and not delving deep enough into just how terrible the lead character's parents and the camps were. When dealing with a sensitive subject matter, it can be difficult to find where they line is so that the film doesn't go into torture porn (*cough* Detroit *cough*). The flip side to that is that not really getting into and addressing how terrible something is can sanitize the story. In Boy Erased, director Joel Edgerton made a deliberate choice to try to not paint Jared's parents as evil when they do evil things to this young man. Again, the film is good...but we can't help but think of how good the film could have been.

Listen to our full review below (or by subscribing to Movie Trailer Reviews on your favorite podcast app) and leave us a comment with what you thought of the film.

We start this episode with an impromptu review of Titans from Dpalm. Let's just say Dpalm is sick of DC's shit.

It's ridiculous that Titans is so bad when DC has a show like Legends of Tomorrow that perfectly balances the crazy and fantastical, with real emotional issues. This episode goes from ridiculously silly to the Legends about to send a creature to Hell for simply existing, not because it did anything wrong. We love how the theme of this season seems to be about those persecuted by human kind and now getting their revenge by not wanting to be wrongfully imprisoned again.

Here are some things that stood out to us:

  • Nate & Gary...Time Bros
  • Ray really is the moral center of the team, even if he doesn't know it
  • The Legends believe they're the ones that unleashed this magical evil but could it really be Constantine?
  • Well that's one way to get Amaya back on the Waverider

This week we're back to talk about Black Lightning 2x04 the final chapter of The Book of Consequences titled Translucent Freak. As The Doctor speculated, Tobias was exactly where he wanted to be. Having eliminated all the witnesses to his crimes, Tobias uses his time in custody to verbally spar with Henderson before being let go. The only living witness to any of his crimes is Jefferson and because Gambi erased any evidence that Jefferson was present at his father's murder, Tobias is free to roam the streets of Freeland now with the backing of The Hundred. And he still has the mystery briefcase of doom.

Jefferson is also dealing with guilt on all sides. Henderson is mad Jefferson didn't tell him about witnessing his dad's death, he's holding residual guilt from Lynn having to kill a man (and once he finds out the slippery slope Lynn is about to fall down, I'm sure he'll blame himself for that too) and now Anissa is playing Robin Hood in the name of Jesus and superhero-ing. Watching his daughter follow in his footsteps actually makes Jefferson mad and he offers her an ultimatum: stop stealing or leave the house ... so now she's bunking with Gambi. Can't wait for those shenanigans.

Jennifer's therapy continues and it seems like a huge trigger is her relationship with Khalil, who is still calling and texting. Since Jennifer can't control her powers and Massa Lowry has implemented a zero-tolerance policy at Garfield High, her house arrest isn't coming to an end anytime soon.

We talk about all this as well as this week's director, the inimitable Salli Richardson-Whitfield on this week's Super Tuesday Recap.

Even with Oliver still in prison and not in the suit, Arrow proves it can still pack in the action and great fight scenes. We get Oliver beating the hell out of Samson (Shoulda never let Oliver see his own blood), another great fight between Silencer & Dinah and even Rene is showing us he's really picked up his fighting skills. Say what you want about this show, one thing they know how to do is produce great action scenes every episode.

Outside of the fight scenes this episode also does a great job of splitting off the characters and giving each group compelling story. We like what they're doing with Felicity and having her take charge. We also like the theme of this seasons which seems to be showing why vigilantes and going outside the official channels of the law are necessary. Even Agent Watson seems to be coming to that conclusion.

Oh and we don't trust Stanley. You shouldn't either.

Supergirl continues to weave the reality of our society into a powerful narrative that is eye opening and sobering.

This week's episode is set in the backdrop of the lead dispersal weapon being used to seed the planet with Kryptonite.  While Kara fights for her life back at the DEO, we see in two years worth of flashbacks how Professor Lockwood became Agent Liberty.  Starting off as someone who tried to preach tolerance of alien life on the planet, his father's rhetoric, combined with the changes the arrival of extra terrestrial life and materials caused in his family's fortune, turns him into a virulent xenophobic murderer.  It also shows that while we often root for our heroes, they can be completely tone deaf and indifferent to the impact of their fight for justice and world peace on the common citizen.

Be forewarned-this is a difficult watch.  It hits very close to home with the rise in fascism and virulent bigotry we are seeing in America today.  Some may make the mistake of believing this episode paints a sympathetic picture of those who resort to hate-it doesn't.  It paints a realistic one, showing how even small actions, combined with a feeling of helplessness, causes the true nature of an individual to rise to the surface.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms should be called Clara and the One & a Half Realms. The movie is dry and feels like only the bare minimum attempt was put into making the film. The story feels completely trimmed down (may come from the replacement of the director and most of the film being reshot), the ballet number (signatures of the Nutcracker) aren't shot in a way to draw the audience in and even the look of the film doesn't stand up to the typical Disney standards (Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Jungle Book, etc). In the end we're not sure who would really find this film appealing. It doesn't capture the moments from the countless plays, movie adaptions and books. It also doesn't have enough spectacle to hold the attention of kids. So who is it for? We're not sure.

The #RalphHive train is here. This is your last chance to get onboard or get left behind. Seriously, the writers this season have done a great job turning the character of Ralph around and in this episode they show us how good this character can be. The Flash has picked up on something that we've been mentioning the last few seasons and that's pairing off characters to tell their own stories. They've really picked this up with Ralph who they've paired off with different characters this season. Not only that, but they've showed that Ralph is actually a competent detective and is really good at his job.

And in addition to Ralph, there's some really great things in this episode:

  • Barry Allen the Husband: Barry dodging trouble by supporting Iris (even her terrible cooking)
  • Casually dropping that Nora is sexually attracted to women
  • Meta Tech: Now we're putting meta-powers into objects and every day people can have them. This opens up a whole new world of villains
  • Cicada is getting more powers? He's even more terrifying

Legends of Tomorrow is such a special show. This show does something that a lot of other shows struggle with. It manages to jump between the silly, fantastical elements and very serious, grounded in reality elements. Witch Hunt bounces between these two tones and elements extremely well. We get a fairy Godmother straight out of a Disney movie from Hell and Mick & Ray getting turned into pigs, mixed in with Zari's very real emotions about her mother and unfair persecution. There's never a dull moment.

We discuss:

  • Unexpected teamups: Ava and Nate teaming up
  • Remembering everyone has a role: Ray makes the comedic jokes, Nate "Natesplains history" and Mick...Mick is grumpy
  • Mick & Constantine bumping heads
  • Who knew a fairy Godmother would be terrifying?
  • Zari can be a problem. How much of her future is going to happen? Is this another Amaya situation?
  • What is coming after Constantine that's so bad that the fairy Godmother would rather be banished to Hell than help him

This week on Black Lightning the pacing is off as the show tries to set up storylines and move various pieces around the board. Khalil is struggling to please Tobias who is still mourning Syonide and carrying out his own nefarious plans. Anissa continues to play Robin Hood, now for a community hospital.

Lynn and Jennifer have the most dynamic storylines. Lynn is experimenting on the pod children and Agent Bill Duke has given her a new partner, Dr. Jace. This doctor specializes in neuropathy and ended up in jail because she illegally experimented on 11 people and they lost their feet. Oh, and one died. So Lynn is working with a mad scientist and her morals are starting to slip.

Jennifer starts sessions with her new therapist, Perenna (guest star Erika Alexander). Perenna has the power to create a reality where Jennifer can process her feelings. Though we only get two scenes of Jennifer's therapy, it's clear that her fear of her powers is also what's causing her powers to go haywire.

And finally, Master Lowry. I'm going to spend as much time as the show did talking about him. He showed up and told Jefferson to clean out his office. The end.

Listen to us discuss all of this and the science of feet falling off on the latest podcast.

What's better than one Black Canary? How about two? Even better, how about two Canaries versus one Longbow Hunter? Yeah Arrow season 7 is really going places we didn't think they would go. First off, this episode has no one in the Green Arrow suit all episode long. Not even flashbacks of Oliver in the suit. And you know what? It still worked. This season so far is really making us think about how things will turn out. Thanks to Legends of Tomorrow, we've seen part of the future before and how vigilantes are treated. Will all that come to be? Will Oliver lose an arm? Is William in the future the current person running around as Green Arrow? We don't know but they have our attention. And these Longbow Hunters aren't playing around.

Kriss is back with another episode of the Insanity Check to cover this week's dose of insanity in the world. This week he's joined by Rich from The UnCancelled Podcast. This week we try to bring a lighter tone to a really crazy week (and even crazier 2018). We're talking devil worshipping preteen wannabe murderers, scamming doctors and scientist creating a robot that gives blowjobs. Look...you've been warned.

Kriss & Phenom are back, this time to review the Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody. So, first off, it's better to look at this film as a Freddie Mercury & Queen appreciation film, and less of a biopic. This film kicked off it's production with all kinds of issues and controversies (What part of Mercury's life were they going to focus on, how much of it would be in there, who would play Freddie, etc). Then, Hollywood piece of shit and director of the film, Bryan Singer decided he was just going to stop showing up on set to make the movie. So Dexter Fletcher had to step in to finish the film. All that to say this film was a mess going through production and the end product is definitely a mess. Characters aren't fleshed out, the lip syncing for the hit songs is completely off and none of the characters outside of Freddie really matter (which is weird when this is also supposed to be a Queen film).

It's not all bad though. Rami Malek puts on one hell of a performance as Freddie Mercury and  for that along the film is worth checking out. The film doesn't "straight-wash" Freddie but overall the film feels very, clean. It's better to consider this film a half-baked musical that does it's best to not offend any of the members of Queen or their families. That makes this a pretty bad biopic but doesn't remove the entertainment value for fans of Queen and Freddie Mercury.

Legends of Tomorrow is Back! The last show in the Arrowverse to return and of course it's the most fun. This episode even opens up with a meta discussion about their ratings and doing the "same thing as last year". Then they end up fighting a hippie-eating unicorn. How can you not love this show? Here are some of our favorite moments that we discuss during this review:

  • Sara and Ava are great together
  • Constantine fits perfectly into the show as the new "I work better alone/people close to me get hurt" character
  • Ray and Nate are Brony Bros? Of course they are
  • When Nora returns will she be evil?

Listen to the full review and let us know what you thought of the season premiere. What are you looking forward to the most this season?

The Death of Vibe shows us that Nora's stint in the 21st century is causing some larger ripples than we thought. Cicada not only is appearing earlier than he should but he isn't David Hersh. This is giving us the same feeling that season 5 of Arrow did when they kept teasing us Adrian Chase only for him to turn out to be someone totally different. We're really enjoying how they're pulling off this season so far with things like that.

  • Ralph has been on fire this season. The way they're using him this season is great
  • Ralph and Caitlyn make a great team
  • Cicada is terrifying and is a real threat (Barry gonna have to learn to throw hands)
  • We got a new Wells (and he's another scammer...are all Wells scammers???)
  • Nora & Iris' icy relationship
  • Who sent Nora? Why did she finally reveal herself?

Also, we're on Jesse L Martin watch. Damn you Dpalm.

We are back again and Supergirl is still moving full speed ahead.  From Nia showing the world how to be a proper ally, to Agent Liberty moderating a straight out of Trumpland MAGA style rally, to Jensen broadcasting to the world he was about to take a heel turn, the show has found a way to balance threads of the same story into a seamless narrative.   We learn more about Mercy's connection to Lex, Nia's history and coming out to James, and J'onn investigating the disappearance of Fiona.  James is being a little too much like Van Jones for our liking, and the only drawback is Rhona Mitra doesn't know how to be anyone but Rhona Mitra.   They handled Kara's eternal optimism working against her and the very people she's trying to help masterfully, and the comedic moments in the midst of a heavy episode were well placed.

Black Lightning 2x02 -  The Book of Consequences: Chapter Two: Black Jesus Blues

Just a heads up, this episode was almost called "We Hate Anissa" because not only was the character on one this week but we're also consistently confounded as to how Anissa's character is being written. At this point, we need the writers to show not tell because everyone is telling me that Anissa is smart but no one has shown me any evidence to back up that hypothesis.

On this week's episode of Black Lightning, Jefferson and Anissa team up when one of the pod kids that Gambi scouted escapes and wreaks havoc with her power to cause windstorms. This reveals Anissa's hubris and obvious need for attention. Just like we said last week, Anissa is not in the superhero business because of altruism. Jefferson is also struggling with giving up his role as principal because they're handing over the reins to a white man. We've scoured the internet but there's no casting information about the incoming principal. All we know is that his name is Mike Lowry (no not that Mike Lowry) and next week's title is Master Lowry.

Jen and Lynn are dealing with their own issues. Khalil is coming around seeking forgiveness but Jen isn't with the shits. And Lynn is trying to balance her scientific curiosity with her compassion for the pod kids. We've got maybe 3 episodes before someone suggests using these kids powers "for good" i.e. making them government assassins.

Finally, Tobias is cleaning up loose ends which mainly involves killing everyone who's ever known him. What's his endgame? We discuss this, Jefferson's Lean On Me moment and more on the podcast.

It's nice to come into a weekly podcast with a topics list and a plan of attack. It's even nicer when the universe hands you Ohio State losing to Purdue and Chris Paul finally getting hit in the mouth on a Saturday night. We've got friend of the show (and Gators fan) Justin on this week to talk firings at USA Gymnastics, Aaron Rodgers being an ax murderer, NCAA basketball and the forthcoming Cocktail Party.

Arrow is back and picks up with the fallout from Oliver turning himself in at the end of last season. One thing that Arrow should be given credit for is the way they're taking chances. Oliver being in jail feels more real and consequential than when Barry was put in jail. We discuss:

  • Oliver being a changed man (although he can still kick people's asses)
  • Why you should never fight a naked man in the shower
  • Rene is still a snitch
  • Getting kicked in the chest will change your life
  • Who is the new vigilante?
  • Oliver Queen...Fastest Man Alive

After surrendering to the police for being the Green Arrow, Oliver tries to survive in the prison while a new unknown vigilante emerges in the Star City.

Michael Meyers is back and so is Jamie Lee Curtis. David Gordon Green's Halloween film is a direct sequel to the original 1978 movie. And it does that film justice. And that's both good and bad. If you were hoping for some out of the box thinking and some smarter characters, you might be a little disappointed. But as a Halloween film, this film does exactly what you were expecting. It also includes one of the greatest black characters ever added to a horror film, Julian, played by Jibrail Nantambu. Despite our complaints, his character alone is enough to highly recommend seeing this film.

Laurie Strode comes to her final confrontation with Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.

What's better than Black Fatherhood Moments with Joe West? Black Grandfatherhood Moments with Joe West. Papa Joe doesn't play. So far this season, the show is really getting back to it's season one form and keeping that focus on family. Also we have to appreciate the show not stringing things along like they have in the past. Season 5 really seems to be taking us back to Season 1 in a slightly different way much like Arrow Season 5 did.

Things that worked:

  • Papa Joe West is killing the Black Fatherhood moments
  • Season One Barry Allen Fail Reel
  • "Han Shot Second" - Sorry but Ralph is great on the show now. His 27 steps weren't even problematic.
  • Splitting the cast up and giving everyone something to do

What we're keeping our eye on:

  • Something is definitely going on with Iris in the future
  • Cicada has our attention
  • Why Nora is working out better than Wally did on the show.

In October 2000, Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley launched Ultimate Spider-Man and it quickly became the the ultimate success story for the ultimate line. Benis and Bagley held the record for the longest continual run on a Marvel comic series by two people. Having one creative team for so long allowed Ultimate Spider-Man to take chances and explore the world of a teenage Peter Parker in ways readers hadn’t experienced before. It takes seven issues to retell Peter’s origins, filling in details that were never explored. But not just that, the entire series rebuilds the legacy of Spider-Man from the ground up. And not just with Peter but the entire cast of villains and supporting characters.

Ultimate Spider-Man is a complete rebooting of Spider-Man, not a retelling. Some elements stay the same (the core of the character) but others change. Those changes might seem drastic at times, but the longer you read the more you realize in ways they’re improvements.

Listen as Kriss & Dpalm discuss the first 10 volumes (Issues 1 - 59) of Ultimate Spider-Man.

We are back!

A new season of Supergirl, with yet another fresh premiere episode!  Kara isn't moping-she's saving the world since Superman is on Argo doing things.  We are introduced to Nia Nal, who is Kara 2.0 from season 1, a fact that is not lost on Kara.  J'onn is part of a alien support group navigating how to be alien in a world that isn't hospitable to them, and struggling to get that message across to Kara, who is an alien who looks like the all American girl and can't fathom the fact that an incident can be both a hate crime and part of a larger plot.  Alex is navigating her new role as director of the DEO, and Lena is trying to figure out how to help James navigate some looming legal issues.  We also see splinter Kara and what she's been up to all this time.

This show continues to cover real world issues with ease.  The allegory of being seen, and how being seen looks different depending on a number of factors, is so poignant given the current societal climate.

Black Lightning 2x01 - The Book of Consequences: Chapter One: Rise of the Green Light Babies

Black Lightning returns with a special guest filled premiere episode. As Jennifer struggles with her ever-growing powers, Jefferson and Lynn try to regain their positions in the aftermath of the attack on the school and the reveal of the ASA's child experimentation. Anissa, always the activist, wants to help the families of the "greenlight babies" who need legal representation to fight the police brutality and the government who wants to sweep their experiments under the rug.

On this week's podcast we discuss these long titles (look there are two colons, that's just grammatically incorrect), green light babies vs. crack babies, the guest appearances of venerable Black actors like Bill Duke and Robert Townsend, and Anissa continuing to be the most extra superhero to walk the streets of Freeland.

Unfortunately, I’ve also lost the annual Over/Unders contest on my own show. Being a glutton for punishment, here we go: Over/Unders. Year three.

The sophomore season of Fox's The Gifted has started off strong. The show picks up 6 months after the end of last season and we quickly learn how things have changed for everyone involved. Jace Turner is no longer with Sentinel Services but he's still obsessed over the Mutant Underground. Lorna and Andy are with the Inner Circle while Marcos and Kate are desperately trying to find them. Reed's own mutant powers start to manifest and that's just the tip of the iceberg. There's so much going on and we're only 3 episodes into this season.

Kriss, Dpalm, Shanna and Jeff discuss the first three episodes and why this show is one of the best comic book shows on TV:

  • Time to let go of Jace...he's going full villain
  • Marcos drunk dials Lorna
  • Lorna's vision of the future is probably more like Inception but Lauren & Andy's might actually happen
  • Reeva is the new Head Mutant in Charge and she's not playing
  • Will Esme's time with the Mutant Underground infect the hive mind and make them all more sympathetic or will she break from them?
  • How the show subtly reminds us that Reed and Kate used to be ain't shit (and in some cases...still are)
  • Morlocks? They really gave us the Morlocks...amazing

For more check out this interview with Emma Dumont (Lorna) and Grace Byers (Reeva) from NYCC.

First Man is extremely boring. There's no other way to put it. It's like watching one of those movies IMAX museums put together that are like 2 hours of watching the Hubble Telescope. Yes the IMAX shot scenes look great but did the audience really need to be bored out of their minds for 2+ hours to get to that point.

Phenom breaks down how many sleeps he got in while trying to sit through this movie.

Bad Times at the El Royale is what The Hateful Eight wanted to be without all of Tarantino's problematic issues. It has an ensemble cast that cover the entire spectrum and work extremely well together. You have Jon Hamm and Jeff Bridges being assholes and at their best. You have Cynthia Erivo putting in one hell of a performance both acting and singing wise. She's quietly the star of this movie. Dakota Johnson makes you forget she was in those terrible 50 Shades of Grey films. And finally, Chris Hemsworth is reunited with Drew Goddard who he worked with on one of his first films (Cabin in the Woods was released in 2012 but film back in 2009).

Everything works for this film. The storytelling, the cast, the way it's shot...everything. This is a mystery/thriller done right and you won't want to miss it.

Listen as we break down why we loved this film so much.

We're Back! The Super Tuesday Recap Podcast is about to kick back into full swing again starting with the season premiere of The Flash season 5. Now we've had our issues with the last couple of seasons and even wrote about what we wanted to see from this season to get it back on track. But this first episode back really put us at ease. Doesn't mean that everything is fixed and we definitely have our things we'll be looking for. However, it's hard to find fault with this show when it puts out an episode like this that focuses on the most important thing in Flash lore: Family.

What worked:

  • Getting back to basics and focusing on family
  • Giving Ralph something to do other than being an asshole
  • Grant Gustin and Candice Patton are great together
  • Handling Wally's departure
  • The new suit is in the ring
  • Tying back into season one with Crisis & Wells teaching Barry how to phase
  • All the Easter Eggs

What we have our eyes on:

  • Can the show maintain such a large cast without anyone getting short changed?
  • Time travel is always going to be part of The Flash. The question is: Will this be more like season 1 or season 3?

We also wonder what's going on with the promotion for Titans and who is the show supposed to be aiming for? And how good is The Gifted? Make sure you're subscribed to hear our review of the first 3 episodes of season 2 coming this weekend.

Season 5 Episode 1
Title:  Nora
Synopsis: After an unexpected guest from the future appears at their home, Barry and Iris must figure out how to get her back to the future without disrupting the timeline.

The Doctor is back!

Season 11 started off with a new, wittier, and more inclusive tone!  Twelve remains my favorite Doctor, but Jodie Whittaker's first outing as our favorite Gallifreyan is making me a believer in her as a potential runner up to my favorite.  She portrays the Doctor with a combination of Capaldi's wit and Smith's wonder, leading me to believe that she is the 13th version of those characters.   This episode is told from the perspective of Ryan Sinclair, a 19 year old who we see trying to learn to ride a bike.  We are quickly introduced to the Doctor's future companions, Yasmin Khan and Graham, Ryan's step grandfather.  The premiere gets dark (the villain wears the molars of his victims as trophies-IN HIS FACE), and we meet and lose quickly Ryan's amazing grandmother Grace, who spends the episode showing why we should always believe in and trust Black women. However, her fate is the one trope-filled decision we cold have done without.   Join us as we chat up episode 1.  Future episodes will come in three episode batches at least once a month until we reach the Christmas episode.

Believe the hype. A Star is Born has no right to be as good as it is. Bradley Cooper upsets us at how talented he is. The accent he uses in this movie sounds like the voice that enslaved our ancestors and yet we were emotionally invested in his character. Lady Gaga is not only spectacular in her musical performance in this movie but her acting performance is also going to get her an Oscar Nomination (and maybe win). Cooper and Gaga also performed the music in this film live which only adds to the powerful scenes.

This movie is emotional, gripping and just flat out good.

We wrap up our discussion about the Robins with Tim Drake and Damian Wayne (with a slight detour to discuss Stephanie Brown). We've covered Tim, Stephanie before in their own Character Corners and touched on Damian's origin in Batman Part 3.  So in this episode we're going to do less of a complete deep dive and more of a conversation about each and where they are now.

If Dick Grayson and Jason Todd are the “wayward sons”, then Tim and Damian are the sons raised right by Bruce. Obviously Tim is more closely like Dick. He’s the Robin that represents one of the key elements of Batman. Grayson is the acrobat, the clear heir, the one version of Bruce that had someone to catch him and guide him through his anger. Tim is the Detective. He had his own father and family and sees the entire chess board. If you think about it, Grayson and Drake represent elements of Batman without the baggage.

Jason Todd and Damian represent the anger and rage of Bruce Wayne. Jason is the rage and insecurities that Bruce has. Damian, is the Bruce that is constantly seeking the approval of his father. In a way Damian represents Jason Todd's story arc (post-crisis) more fleshed out. Damian is getting the full arc as Robin that Jason never got.

So sit back and get comfortable and listen as we go through the rest of the Robins. Share with your friends and leave us some feedback

It's that time again. The whole Super Tuesday Recap team is here (Kriss, Dpalm, Shanna & The Doctor) to preview the upcoming Fall line up of Super Tuesday Shows. Basically it's the entire Arrowverse plus The Gifted. We cover what worked for each show last season and what we're looking forward to this season.

  • Will we see any more of the Bat family (or even Batman himself) in the Arrowverse?
  • The Gifted is already back and they're already hitting it out the park
  • What does The Flash need to do to get back on top?
  • What was the biggest surprise about Black Lightning last season and what do we look forward to seeing this season?
  • The Doctor is really excited about Supergirl returning. How this show went from mediocre on CBS to great on CW
  • What Arrow needs to do to keep pace with the other shows
  • Legends of Tomorrow is the best show in the Arrowverse and everyone should be watching. Matt Ryan's Constantine fits in perfectly

Oh and we sprinkle in some Supernatural slander throughout the show.

Agents of Shield, Star Trek Discovery and Cloak & Dagger come back next year so we didn't include them in this preview but we're still reviewing them when they come back so make sure you subscribe so you don't miss an episode.
