Thor: Ragnarok drops this week and so it's time to wrap up our Thor Character Corner with part 2. First we quickly cover what happened when we last left Thor during part 1. Ragnarok happened and Thor and the rest of Asgard died. And Thor stayed dead for a while. When the road to Civil War started, Thor was still gone but Mjolnir makes an appearance, falling to Earth as the Gods died, tearing a hole that allows Doctor Doom to escape Hell. After a brief attempt by Doom to take the hammer for himself, we then get Tony Stark's bad idea to make a Thor clone that...has disastrous results.

Finally Thor returns. We focus on two writers this episode that really encapsulate Thor's return and that's J. Michael Straczynski (JMS) and current Thor writer Jason Aaron. JMS and Aaron really lean into the idea of Thor and the rest of Asgard being Gods. In a way, Thor is written much like Jesus is from the Bible and there are a lot of great stories. Asgard is reformed above Broxton, Oklahoma and while it seems like this could be a repeat of what happened the last time Thor & Asgard floated above earth, this time is vastly different.

JMS and Jason Aaron really call into question not only what it means to be a God and if mortals still need Gods.

You'll want to listen to our full Character Corner as we follow the journey of Thor (Odinson) to Thor (Jane Foster).

Kriss and Dpalm are back to review the latest episode of Inhumans, The Gentleman's Name is Gorgon. There's no reason to beat around the bush, Inhumans is clearly limping it's way to the finale of this first (and probably only) season. There is more Crystal in this episode and we get to see her use her powers a little bit more (kinda) but Isabelle Cornish really is struggling with her acting with the character. The rest of the episode isn't necessarily bad but it does feel like the show is cutting corners because of the condensed season and the pacing and story telling are suffering. Maximus dealing with Tibor's betrayal should have been a more interesting plot but instead it just feels cheap and unearned. With only two more episodes left can Inhumans right the ship and stick the landing? We'll see. Listen to get our full review.

Kriss and Dpalm are back this week to review Arrow season 6 episode 3, Next of Kin. Arrow shocked us both by actually doing what we hoped the Flash would do with Kid Flash and is actually letting Diggle put on the hood and lead the team as the Green Arrow. This is a pretty significant shift for a show and while Diggle does have some struggles and they're clearly going with a storyline to get Oliver back, it works out pretty well. Listen for our full review of how Diggle does on his first episode as Star City's vigilante.

Kriss and Dpalm are back to review season 3 episode 3 of Legends of Tomorrow, Zari. We meet the new member of the crew, Zari and with that this season starts to feel like a better version of season 1. We have two crew members that are tied through elements of the past (Zari and Amaya) and have a connection to the villain. We're way more confident that they'll pull this off this season than the first though. Mick Rory is the MVP of this episode. He has some great one liners and reactions to situations. Sara loses (scaring us all), Nate gets high and Gary fucks up. Listen to our full review to hear us discuss it all.

We're back with another review/discussion about The Flash. This season has done a really good job of resetting the show to be more fun while still having serious moments. Hazard turned out to be a pretty formidable foe. We also got to see more of The Thinker's involvement with the new Metas which has a Wells Season 1 feel to it but still fresh. There will probably be some disappointment with the treatment of Wally and while valid, we make a pretty good point as to why it's not that bad.

When it was first announced that Fox would be doing a X-Men TV show, a lot of us were rightfully skeptical. Fox has had the rights to the X-Men for over 17 years and while their animated cartoons certainly resonated, their live action movies leave a lot to be desired for the fans of the X-Men. But after three episodes, The Gifted is proving to be the live action X-Men we've been waiting for. Sure, they don't have costumes and the X-Men and Brotherhood aren't on the show now (they've "disappeared"), but the show nails everything that makes the X-Men so great. From the allegory to civil rights to how emotions affect mutant's powers. It's all in there. We discuss the first three episodes of The Gifted and talk about why we love it so much and what we expect (and hope to see) from the rest of the season.

The Inhumans is in a weird place. There are certain elements of this episode that work really well and make sense in a shorter season. But then there are other things that clearly would have benefited from at least 13 episodes. We think that the relationships on the show would have benefited from a longer season. This episode had much better chemistry between Black Bolt and Medusa than when we first saw them together in the pilot. And Gorgon & Karnak together are also pretty good. There's a good show here, we just wish it had been given the proper chance to develop.

Kriss and Dpalm are back to review Arrow, this week with episode 2 of season 6, Tribute. So far we're enjoying this season and we think the show is doing a good job of avoiding the obvious minefields we thought they would hit (William on the show could be a disaster). We like how William is handled this episode and we also like that the question is finally asked about how some of Team Arrow is making their money. We have questions about how Diggle will be written with his injury, but overall we're enjoying it. Make sure you listen to the episode for our full review.

So, this review starts with a  bit of a debate between Kriss and Dpalm. Kriss doesn’t think that the writing is doing the Legends any favors by making them seem really incompetent (Particularly Nate, Ray and Jax this episode). Dpalm makes the point that after last season the show has earned our trust and we should just enjoy the ride. Despite the difference of opinions we still find things we can agree on with this episode.

We first start off with: That Black Panther trailer. Kriss and Dpalm talk about why we need to just let people have their fun and excitement for Black Panther. It’s been a long time coming and we deserve to be happy, particularly considering that everything we’ve seen has surpassed our expectations. Even then, it shouldn’t matter if the film is mediocre or not, the historical relevance of this film is already enough to be excited about.

Then we move on to reviewing the actually episode. The Flash so far is back on track this season by focusing on what made the first season so enjoyable: Having Fun. We got some great uses of Barry's powers this episode (taking apart a moving car and stopping each piece of grenade shrapnel). But we also got much better writing for the relationships. Barry and Iris have always had communication issues and with Barry back, we could have gotten another season of stretching that out. Instead the show finally addresses one of the biggest issues from the last 3 seasons and does it in a pretty good way. Plus we get Cisco in the doghouse, Barry's new hi-tech suit and more.

We’re a few weeks out from Thor: Ragnorak being released so I guess it’s time to drop our latest Character Corner: Thor Part 1!

First off, we recorded this over a month ago so please excuse any outdated references. If you’re listening to this I’m assuming Trump hasn’t killed us all so that’s a positive. Anyway, in this first part of a two part series, we cover Thor Volume 1 and Thor Volume 2. Our main focus though is the Walt Simonson run from volume 1 that ran from issues 337 – 382. Simonson both wrote and draw these issues and the entire run is a masterpiece. He introduces Beta Ray Bill, gives us an epic battle with Sutur, Skurge’s Last Stand and even turns Thor into a frog. It’s a wonderful run that is always at the top of any “Best of Thor” list.

We then get into Dan Jurgen’s volume 2 which starts off rough but really picks up with the death of Odin and Thor taking over as the All Father. We find out why Thor’s connection to humanity is needed and the disastrous results if Thor fully embraces being a God without that connection. And then Ragnorak comes.

In both volumes 1 & 2 we see the story of Ragnorak with volume 2 fully seeing Ragnorak coming to fruition. If you want to prepare for Thor: Ragnorak come November 3rd, make sure you listen to this Character Corner, then check out the issues below. Every issue should be on Marvel Unlimited, so get to reading.

Issues:

  • Thor: Tales of Asgard (2009) – Remasters old Jack Kirby & Stan Lee stories that flesh out Odin & Asgard
  • Journey Into Mystery #83 – First Appearance of Thor
  • Avengers #1
  • Thor Volume 1
    • Walt Simonson’s Run
      • #337-340 – The Ballad of Beta Ray Bill
      • #340 – 353 – The Sutur Saga
      • #362 – Skurge’s Last Stand
    • Thor Volume 2
      • #36 – 43 - The Death of Odin
      • Gods on Earth – # 51- 58, Iron Man #64, Avengers #63
      • Spiral - #59-67
      • #80 – 85 - Thor Disassembled (Ragnarok)

Inhumans is slowly finding its footing but with the shorter season, there's not much time left to rebound completely. That said, episode 4, Make Way For...Medusa is probably the best episode so far. There are still some issues with this episode. We wish that they focused only on Maximus, Black Bolt and Medusa this episode. That doesn't mean the other scenes were bad (well, except for Crystal) but it would have been nice just to stay focused on those three without making the episode feel overly stuffed. But that's a byproduct of a shorter season.

The last of our returning shows is here, Arrow Season 6. After the great season 5, we were a little nervous about how this season would start off but so far so good. The advances to Oliver's character from last season seem to be sticking and it's almost jarring not seeing a broken Oliver. The rest of the team however, does have a lot of demons. From Diggle to Quentin...even Oliver's son William (although Kriss thinks William needs to get his shit together). Check out our full review.

On the surface Happy Death Day just seems like another Groundhog Day rip off that is bound to be stupid and suck. So imagine our surprise when...we actually enjoyed it. But we quickly see that Captain Sara Lance and the Legends can be just as useful as they can be destructive. As Mick said “Sometimes we screw things up for the better.”

Legends of Tomorrow continues to be the “fun” show out of all the CW DC TV shows. We get Sara kicking ass and beating up Julius Caesar, Nate and Ray bro’ing out and Rip Hunter becoming exasperated with the group he used to lead but knowing he can’t really control them (but might need them). But there are also serious moments like the moments between Jax and Stein.

All in all its great to have Legends of Tomorrow back and we can’t wait to see how this season unfolds. Listen to our full review/recap/discussion and more sure you subscribe to the Super Tuesday Recap Podcast to get all of our reviews.

We’re back with another season of The Flash. We were disappointed with the end of season 3 of The Flash but we’re confident that season 4 will turn it around. And the first episode, The Flash Reborn, starts off pretty strong. The writers seem to be course correctly out the gate with several of the problems we had last season:

  • Change in Tone – This episode felt more like the beginning of season 1. Last season was too dark and that started from the first episode. Despite Barry sacrificing himself last season, the opening tone is much lighter. Kid Flash and Vibe taking down Peek-a-Boo with Iris running command reminded us of early season 1. And that’s not to say that there weren’t serious moments due to Barry’s absence but there was a good balance
  • Improved Characterizations for Female Characters – Iris filling the Harrison Wells role and running Team Flash finally gives Iris something to do and a purpose beyond being the future Mrs. Allen. Joe and Iris have always been the foundation of Team Flash but Iris has never really had a steady place. We’re hoping that they continue to let her grow into this leadership role even with Barry being back. We even liked the way that Caitlyn was handled this episode. While we’re still nervous about how they handle the Killer Frost persona, in this episode her medical skills and knowledge were put front and center
  • Barry is Finally The Flash –

Now that’s not to say this episode was perfect. We think they rushed the return of Barry a bit. It would have been nice to stretch it out a bit more and see the team of Iris, Wally and Cisco working together more. But overall it was a pretty solid premiere episode.

College football is good for one crazy, nuts, insane, upset weekend a year, and the chaos worshiping side of me hopes this was just the beginning. We've got upsets galore, UGA turning into a top 4 team, and Columbia continuing to collect wins. Plus, we're joined by the homie Mike to pick win totals for the entire NBA, and even work quick snaps into this week's super sized Unanimous Decision.

We're back to review episode 3 of season1  of Inhumans, Divide...and Conquer. So first things first, this episode is better than the pilot and proves that Inhumans had no business being released in IMAX in the theaters in the first place. That said, there's still a lot of problems, with the main issue being Black Bolt and Medusa being uninteresting. But that could change. Some flashbacks to younger Maximus and Black Bolt revealed some missing context to their relationship and upbringing that could have been useful in the pilot. Plus there's some interesting new characters (Dr Declan) that give a glimpse of a bigger and more interesting storyline.

The show also maintains interest with villains that viewers can't get behind. While we know Maximus is the bad guy because he's trying to have his family killed, he makes a compelling case. He comes off as the voice for the "everyday man" and wants to end the discriminatory caste system. On paper he's the revolutionary out fighting for the people. His story is clearly the most interesting and relatable of the Royal Family (Karnak being the second). With only 5 episodes left, will that be enough to save this first season of Inhumans?  We'll see.

After all these years it’s good to have Star Trek back on TV (well…sort of). On this Super Tuesday Recap episode we’re reviewing the first three episodes of Star Trek: Discovery (The Vulcan Hello, Battle at the Binary Stars, Context is for Kings). It’s a fun episode that you’re going to want to check out!

Topics

  • Our thoughts on the three episodes so far and the direction the series is going
  • The blend of action and staying true to the exploration/science aspect of Star Trek
  • The one nitpick: They gotta stop doing prequel Star Trek shows. The technology is way too advanced
  • How Sonequa Martin-Green’s Michael Burnham takes aspects from both Kirk and Spock
  • Is Captain Lorca a sociopath? He seems to lack a care for the lives of his crew (and others). How will that play with Burnham who committed mutiny in order to save hers. How will Saru handle this?
  • Cadet 53% Tilly
  • The look of the Klingons and why maybe Star Fleet should have just left them alone
  • The stupid decisions CBS is making with Discovery being only available through CBS All Access in the states

We’ll be back in a few weeks to review the next 3 episodes of Star Trek: Discovery. Make sure you subscribe to Super Tuesday Recap on iTunes/Stitcher/Google so you don’t miss an episode.

STICK TO POLITICS, he screamed at the resident of the Oval Office. We recorded early today to avoid the latest twitter based hate mongering from the Cheeto in Chief, but we still had to talk about last week's quotes, and the NFL's subsequent response. On the other side of those waters, we break down the latest NBA moves, and the biggest and brightest NCAA Basketball scandal of my lifetime. Oh, and UGA and Columbia keep winning, so I celebrate that too.

And so it begins. We’re back with our Super Tuesday Recap reviews. First up, Kriss and Dpalm tackle Marvel’s Inhumans. There’s been a lot of talk about this show already and most of it is not good. So is it as bad as the early reviews say? No but…it’s complicated. Dpalm plays the “good cop” on this one while Kriss is “bad cop”. The short answer is, if you’re expecting something on par with other Marvel TV properties  like Agents of SHIELD or Agent Carter, you’re going to be disappointed. But there is potential (as proved by the previews for the rest of the season) and it could be that the pilot was just rushed and wasted too much money on the IMAX cameras.

So we will be sticking with the show (hey, there’s only 6 more episodes left). Listen to our review and check out what we thought worked and what didn’t and what we think needs to change for this series to turn around. And make sure you’re subscribe to the Super Tuesday Recap podcast on iTunes/Stitcher/Google music to stay up with all our future reviews (Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash, Star Trek Discovery and more).

The one benefit of Trump attacking athletes is that Dpalm and the Unanimous Decision podcast have to cover politics freeing up the Insanity Check to talk other things this week. For that, Kriss brings on Tim (@Peoplescrtic) to cover some entertainment and movie news that's been slipping through the cracks. We still touch on a little politics but we also hit the hard hitting stories like...the Mad Pooper.
